    "Broadway" Lyrics:
    Broadway's dark tonight
A little bit weaker than you used to be
    Broadway's dark tonight
See the young man sittin' in the old man's bar
Waitin' for his turn to die
The cowboy kills the rock star
And Friday night's gone too far
The dim light hides the years
    On all the faded girls
    Forgotten but not gone
You drink it off your mind
You talk about the world like it's someplace that you've been
You see, you'd love to run home, but you know you ain't got one
Cuz you're livin' in a world that you're best forgotten, around here
    Broadway's dark tonight
A little bit weaker than you used to be
    Broadway's dark tonight
See the young man sittin' in the old man's bar
Waitin' for his turn to die
You choke down all your anger
    Forget your only son
You pray to statues when you sober up for fun
    Your anger don't impress me
The world slapped in your face
It always rains like hell on the loser's day parade
You see, you'd love to run home, but you know you ain't got one
Cuz you're livin' in a world that you're best forgotten
When you're thinkin' you're a joke and nobody's gonna listen
To the one small point I know they've been missing around here
    Broadway's dark tonight
A little bit weaker than you used to be
    Broadway's dark tonight
See the young man sittin' in the old man's bar
Waitin' for his turn to die
You see, you'd love to run home, but you know you ain't got one
Cuz you're livin' in a world that you're best forgotten
When you're thinkin' you're a joke and nobody's gonna listen
To the one small point I know they've been missing around here
    Round here, yeah
    Broadway's dark tonight
A little bit weaker than you used to be
    Broadway's dark tonight
See the young man sittin' in the old man's bar
Waitin' for his turn to die

I remember being 23 and hearing this song in a hole in the wall bar surrounded by people 20 to 40 years older than me and that line about the young man sitting in the old man's bar waiting for his time to die really resonated with me.

    • @XxTaiMTxX
      @XxTaiMTxX Před rokem +7

I had a double resonation with it. When I was a young child, the line "You talk about the world like it's some place that you've been" was something I frequently thought about the authority figures in my life. The people who proclaimed to know things that they knew nothing about.
Then, when I became an adult and put away my childishness, the second resonation came when I realized that "We're all just children forever, talking about the world like it's someplace that we've been."
I suppose that's the magic of the Goo Goo Dolls songs. They mean something different at 16 than they do at 24. They mean something different at 18 than they do at 30.
You talk about the world like it's someplace that you've been.

I hope I can learn all I can from them, be inspired and take what they’ve taught and spin it in a similar direction but one that perfectly expresses me in my own art. Some of the best things in life aren’t always the most popular including this band, but I’m really a big fan. They’re still pretty popular compared to many others, I just don’t understand why they’re not even more popular. I’d rather listen to this than 90% of the stuff on the radio.

What's interesting about Johhny is his journey. In this song he alludes to his father's struggle with and death from alcohol, and his fear that his own will take him down the same sad path. A similar message can be heard in the song, "Home" where it seems like Johnny is just tired of fakeness and meaningless conversations and just wants to go "home" - a word he doesn't really define, but we all know what "home" feels like - a place you can be real, be yourself, be safe, and know love. How very poetic that in a still-later song called, "Long way Home" he sings from a much more positive perspective. He has survived his addiction and found new meaning in life. It may not be the popular thing to be, but to be honest, I've been a Christian all my life and appreciated his songs as a teenager back in the day. The pain and honesty in his music are very human and they reflect much of the struggle the Bible says we will go through in life if we live honest with ourselves and struggle to find the meaning in it all. His honesty resonated with me and moved me to pray for him every time I heard his songs - that God would preserve him even through the worst moments, would gradually work the clarity and meaning into his life that he obviously, honestly seeks and which I also sought and struggled to find - still struggle to find at times. God loves Rock stars too and He knows their pain and does not reject them for it. I still pray for this guy and his family often. God bless him for his attempts to be honest with himself and the world.

Great song by the best group in music today. Love these guys. Lucky enough to see them live just outsided of Sacramento. "Broadway" is a Fantastic sound of the 90's that could have been written in the 60's or 70's about a returning Viet Nam Veteran. Think about River Phoenix's character in the movie "Dog Fight". That's the film and the time period I think about when I hear "Broadway".

This was the gem track from Dizzy Up the Girl, well in my opinion anyway. There's so much being said in this song, and the video itself is filled with substance and prolific meaning. Goo Goo Dolls are true artists, 'Name' was proof of that, although 'Iris' and 'Slide' gave 'em a huge break and the recognition they truly deserved. They're simply classic, and quite underrated despite their considerate success. Goo's have always been true to their music, that's what I love most about them.

Growing up in Buffalo's 'burbs in the 90's, this song was a MASSIVE hit locally. And being an 11 year old unfamiliar with why "Broadway" would be dark, instead of bright lights and shows, confused me. I didn't understand that "Broadway" Johnny was referencing was Buffalo's east-side thoroughfare that is a postcard for "Rust Belt" post industrial wasteland, poverty, and degradation. My dad at the time said, "Steve, it's about OUR Broadway, not New York's Broadway. I'll explain it when you're older." I get it now.

Goo Goo Dolls were pretty close from it as well, a street called Sweet (spoilers: it's not sweet at all). My dad knew their manager in passing. The song is an apt description of the drunkards that spend every waking moment in the bars getting trashed.
