069 Preparing planemaking billets out of spalted pear

- The log showed on my instagram profile was cutted and splited in march 2021. It was about 120 years old wild pear tree. As bonus - the wood was spalted. After spliting all the pieces were drying outside, in the shaded and
airy place. Today it is the time to prepare some hand plane billets and let them dry in the workshop for 12 months or more.
The process is nothing fancy, just some of you asked me about it so here is the video :)
I have almost no time for the workshop, but don't worry - we are good and healthy. The weather does not allow renovation work outside so i hope i'll make some projects soon :)
Spalted wood is a little bit weaker, but i'm gonna stabilize it and build moving fillister planes. The wood looks awesome and i think the planes wiil look the same!
Have a nice evening :)
Cheers!
BTW. I don't take orders and usually i don't sell my planes.
The most sure way to get some of them is take a part in giveaways for my supporters.

Ooooh moving fillister planes... I cant wait to see that :)
Oh now I understand all about the little hand and the pear wood and the little voice saying something... God bless you and your family and your creative hands. Regards.
I miss my beagle! They're such good dogs but rambunctious and bullheaded but they're still sweet and amazing!
Cannot wait to see you back in the shop...
Nice to see how you test the ends of the billets to remove the cracks. Thanks for the video!
You're welcome :)
Great to see you again my friend. Keep you and your family safe. Regards Jim UK.
Hey Jim :) Merry Christmast!
New pear planes incoming and a new puppy??? Well worth the wait as always, thanks so much for sharing Stavros 👏
Hey Alec, yes :) I'm gonna build some planes out of that wood. Thanks a lot! Merry Christmast :)
Very excited to see the planes when the time comes. That spalted pear is beautiful!
Hey Grant :)
Pear is such a beautiful wood, upon which to work and look. I have made a few spoons from pear.
Good to see you again. Merry Christmas!
Hey Walter! Merry Christmast!
То что делает МАСТЕР это чудо. Все руками, почти без машин. Супер поляк!!! С Рождеством и Новым Годом. Все изделия в музей и Книгу Гинесса!!!
Thank you! Merry Christmast!
Beautiful. Thanks for this new perspective.
Woohoo! Thank you for the video.
You're welcome David, merry christmast!
Merry Christmas to you and yours Stavros. Thanks for sharing
You're welcome Yves, merry christmast :)
I am super excited about another video from my friend on another continent.
I have been working on my house that is taking way to long. Really I have been working on getting the shop areas set up to make the house renovation go faster and cleaner.
I also have been gifted a couple of Osage Orange trees.
Seasons greetings from the high plains of Texas.
Hey Ryan :) Merry Christmast my friend!
Cool! Been waiting for a new video.
Gracias por tu nueva aportación, siempre es un placer ver tu trabajo. 👏👏👏👏👏 Felices fiestas para ti y tu familia. 🥂
Thanks a lot Pepe! Merry Christmast!
Always learn something when watching your videos !
Hey Michael! Merry Christmast :)
@@StavrosGakos And a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays to you and your family, Stavros. Hope all is well and they are enjoying your new home.
Short trousers in a Polish winter!
Haha only in the workshop :)
Zanęciłeś Stavrosie ...i trzeba cierpliwie czekać:) Świąteczne Pozdrowienia!!! Wojtek
Ja również muszę jeszcze poczekać ;) Wszystkiego najlepszego!
I have a Mathiasson moving filister like yours, what a wonderful tool it is.
Yes
Hey Luiz :)
Welcome back! I see some new shop toys, thanks for the video
Hey Mitchell! You're welcome :) Merry Christmast!
Thanks Stavros, it's been a while but as always it's worth the wait. Oh and merry Christmas to you and your family.
Merry Christmast Andrew :)
Welcome back! Glad to see you are still at it. I was worried in these troubled times. Thanks for this video. I love that you are doing it with such old wood. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Don't worry Bill, we are good :) Happy New Year!
Stavros Gakos gets a planer! 😢 😂
Wbrew pozorom bardzo przydatny film! ;)
Siemasz :)
Nareszcie zapowiedź kolejnych ekranizacji powieści o powstawaniu pięknych narzędzi 😁 Wesołych Świąt Eso 😁
Hej Darek! Wesołych :)
The most lovely and wonderful part of your utterly useless and boring video is when the little lady comes and says something, which I don't understand at all but repeated the video many times to hear her. Children are the most beautiful beings. 😍. I have been watching your videos, copied one of your strike block plane, tried to send you the picture but in vain I am not good enough with networking. 74 now, just finished my 18" band saw took me 2 years to make 407 kg. of new and old iron all put together. Tomorrow or today will give it a test run. Although I just started as woodworking as hobby but with the passage of time I'm ending as tool and machine maker. You are God gifted, love the way you make woodworking tools. Keep it up, it keeps your mind healthy and wealthy with sound knowledge and peace. Regards and best wishes and love ❤ for the little lady.
Lol lmao what was the point of the first few words?🤣🤣🤣
@@laurentiustanea7840 they were to highlight the latter ones. In fact they are meaning less. I am a fan of this guys plane making.
Nice. I likewise have a lot of pear that I've salvaged a few years ago, still mostly in rounds, some split and rough billets. Bradford pear is a pest tree but good for projects.
I like the glue-on-ends trick.
Thanks.
You're welcome Ryan!
I love it! Some good looking spalted pear :) will turn into fine planes, buddy!
Hey Michal, it's good to see you here :) thank you!
Really beautiful work, dude! Amazing looking wood! 😃
Looking forward to the planes!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
And merry Christmas!
Thanks a lot! Merry Christmast :)
To teraz czekamy aż z każdego kęsa powstanie strug i jego ekranizacja! Dobra robota, pozdro.
Strugaj i działaj 👍 pozdrowienia!
👏👏👏👍👊
Always a pleasure to see your videos my friend! Is that a new piece of equipment in your shop? Excellent billets, I am very jealous! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Hey Jeremy! Yes, i'm still trying to developer my workshop. Thanks!
Very excited to see this process old friend. Hey was that wood glue that you spread on the end of each piece? To keep from cracking?
Hey! Yes, i noticed that white glue is good for end grains sealing 👍
Very good as always, I got pear and apple in my basement almost ready to start. Is that glue you put on the end? Have a Merry Christmas
Hey, yes it was glue. I found it works great to seal the end grains. Merry Christmast!
Happy to see some new projects coming through! What can we do to get some blueprints to build beautiful planes like yours?
Hey Jacob! At this moment i don't have any plans, but i will prepare some one day :)

Nice wood. What model is the jointer/planer? Thanks.
Thanks, it is MTB hc260
Hej, widzę, że masz wilgotnościomierz popularnej pomarańczowej firmy, mozesz powiedzieć gdzie kupiłeś igły do miernika? U mnie sie pogięły, muszę wymienić na Twoim wygladają na dużo solidniejsze.
Wszystkiego dobrego w nowym roku. Robisz naprawdę piękne narzedzia:)
Dziękuję bardzo! Jeszcze ich nie wymieniałem :) najlepszego!
The lack of black spalting lines makes me think it's a liberty to call it spalting. The yellow white splots is more rotten than spalted. Was it soft? Is a soft wood good for planes? I prefer as hard a wood as possible for wood planes for durability.
Hey, i wrote about it in the description
@@StavrosGakos I can only see in your description you calling it spalted. Yellow splotches aren't as dramatic or interesting as the black lines of real spalting.
hi, what knives do you use on metabo hc 260?
Hello, Metabo knives
Who makes that jointer?
Its Metabo HC260 :)
Is that just wood glue to seal the ends?
Hey Harry, yup :)
Why did you glue the end of the wood?
End grains are like open door for the moisture - when the wood will lost it too fast the cracks will come out 🍻
Stavros Gakos In the next couple months I will be turning a large Shag Bark Hickory been down over a year into lumber using a chainsaw mill that will leave lots of 6-12 inch limbs that are to small to turn into boards. If you are willing to pay just the shipping I will ship you a 6" tall x 12" wide X 12" deep of what size rough cut as you request for just the shipping costs to you as if not put to use just gets burned up in the fire pit.
Hey John! At this time i have too much wood waiting for prepare so i don't want to take more, but thank you for your offer 👍
Nice planer who makes it?
Hey Bruce! It is Metabo hc260. Thank you for your support :)
@@StavrosGakos If I may ask, are you satisfied with this planer? I would like to buy one, would you recommend this one for smaller projects? Thank you so much for your videos, I enjoy watching them for quite some time now :D
@@lenarossetti437 Hey, it's good for small projects but it take some time for planer to thicknesser change. If you accept it it will be good👍
Oops, accidentally used my wives account ;-)
Thank you so much, I am looking forward to work with this machine!
