Performance Notes:
While originally written for piano, Faure’s “Pavane” has become much more well-known from a later setting for orchestra with an optional “invisible” (off-stage) chorus. A “pavane” is a court dance, originally from Italy, but later adopted in Spain, and this is the style of dance the composer intends to evoke through his music.
While the phrases are sometimes quite long, they may be sensibly broken; and this is preferable to stretching phrases beyond what is able to be played beautifully. While the individual soloists should feel somewhat musically “untethered,” there should be some attention to matching the style. In particular, any subtle alterations, for example, to rhythmical figures like the dotted figure below should be consistent between all the soloists. Many musicians choose to play these notes just a fraction later than what would be strictly metrical.
Dynamics and tempo markings which did not appear in the original orchestral piece are shown as below, as is a relatively new notational device showing a diminuendo to nothing (akin to the marking "niente").

Have a great week everyone!
I love this piece! Great work from everyone involved :)
Thanks, nyancs! One of my favorites as well.
Just played along with this...twice. The first time I played the 2nd trumpet part, then the first part. While playing one piece for 6 minutes takes me to the limits of my endurance, I found the first trumpet part very playable. Thanks Drew, for the rests and for the moments of playing in the lower register.
Haha, I wish there could be MORE rests. From the arranger/orchestrator perspective, sometimes you have to make the hard choice of whether or not to leave something out in order to give a needed rest. In this case, I kept it all in, but was able to give a few rests to the players. One of my knocks on many arrangers is they write EVERYTHING as if it's their magnum opus and can't possibly leave anything out for the sake of making the piece actually usable in performance. I try not to do that too often, but I'm guilty also.
As usual, this is great! The accuracy on those trombone intervals was impressive. As an adult learner/amateur returning to music after some years off, this piece challenges me on multiple instruments (all but tuba). I'll have to purchase this arrangement for sure.
Thanks, Stanford. This turned out nicely. It's a difficult piece to get just right--and you're right, even all that pizzicato stuff can be tough. Always easier to keep an airstream rolling than to chop it up into staccato bits.
Very good arrangement and great playing. Makes me miss being in a brass quintet! Thanks for sharing.
Glad you like the piece, David.
Beautiful!!
Thank you, Rick.
This was great. All of you sound so good together. Loved the arrangement. The trombone part is very interesting and since I was a trombone player I was probably listening more closely to it. Thank you so much.
Glad you liked it, Sandra.
Absolutely gorgeous. I love the subtle change of tone color that the flugelhorn gives as opposed to the cornet. Such a beautiful arrangement!
I agree. For this tune, my main goal was the shift the timbre of the whole thing a bit darker (two trumpets being brighter, and bass trombone on the bottom being even brighter). I also like that there are no matched instruments in the ensemble. It makes every part clearer. A bit harder to blend, but easier to hear each detail.
And thanks, by the way.
Beautiful balance!
Thanks, Thomas.
Superb!
Thanks, buffalobillh.
