  • This is Tamara, I’m a paediatric physiotherapist. I will show you the best steps to teach your child how to jump. Before we dive into the ‘How’ part, let’s go through these common questions.
    * When do children start jumping?
    Children are expected developmentally to begin jumping in place between the age of 22 and 30 months with both feet. Although some children begin jumping before or after this age, children should be able to jump off the ground with both feet before the age of 3 years.
    * What are the main prerequisite motor skills for jumping?
    - Squat during play - Going up and down stairs (with support) - Climb low equipment - Running (many children begin jumping in the same period they learn how to run).
    * Why is jumping important?
    - First, jumping is one of the most important basic sport skill that is required in almost every sport.
    - Second, jumping improves children’s core and lower extremity muscle strength
    - Third, jumping helps advancing children’s motor coordination and planning skill.
    - Fourth, acquiring such an essential motor skill allows children to engage in any type of physical activity confidently with their peers and siblings.
    * What are the steps needed to perform jumping?
    (1) Ideation: before we do any movement with our body, we need to establish the intention to do it. When we want from the child to jump, the child has to understand what is jumping and has the intention to jump in order to begin the second step,
    (2) Processing happens when the brain parts talk to each other to plan how to jump in terms of - body parts involved - the force needed - the direction of jumping- and other elements. For proper processing to happen, the brain needs to communicate with multiple sensory systems to execute jumping efficiently. Some of these sensory systems include touch and joint sensations,
    (3) Execution: after initiating and idea and forming the plan, the child can execute jumping. To jump efficiently, the child needs sufficient core and lower extremity muscle strength, good balance & posture control, and adequate motor coordination skills, here are the links to work on these areas with your child;

    If your child acquired all jumping prerequisite gross motor skills, and s/he does understand what jumping is especially that you notice her/his attempting to jump but yet can’t execute jumping, then you can follow these steps:
    (1) Full physical support from underarms. Direct your child’s body into squatting position whether to 90 degrees or deeper. Then, push his body off the floor so s/he feels the movement. When the child starts helping in pushing his body off the floor then you can move to the next level,
    (2) Moderate physical assistant with two-hand support: you are going to lead her/his body to squat position then to push his body off the ground, when your child starts to squat down and push off his body without you leading the movement, then you can move to the next level,
    (3) Self-support: the child will hold onto a table to take the amount of support he needs, when you notice that your child is jumping easily more than three consecutive jumps, then you can move to the last level,
    (4) Jump independently: a great way to encourage your child to jump in place is to hit a balloon in the air or to pop bubbles.

      Of course I can. Thank you for your great suggestion, it's actually on my to do list :) I will share a video specifically about eye-hand coordination soon. Meanwhile, check these two videos as they have some eye-hand coordination activities; Motor coordination activities using the cardboard boxes czcams.com/video/c4wxr2gvVgs/video.html ,and Motor coordination activities using the rings czcams.com/video/KBapOEyPE0g/video.html
