2 sixth graders nominate their custodian for a surprise and his reaction is priceless

- It’s not often we get emails from sixth graders about their school custodians. But that’s exactly what happened a few months ago.
Owen and Dane go to Rimrock Elementary School and wrote the following about their janitor, Leslie Pitman - aka “Joe.”
Joe is mostly deaf and has always relied on reading lips to communicate with the teachers and students. This year, with the mask requirements, he was no longer able to read lips and became very isolated. Despite the limitations, Joe still found ways to make us laugh and interact with us.
Joe has always worked hard for our school, but this year has been especially hard because of the Covid cleaning requirements and the night shift custodian got sick and wasn’t been able to return to work. Joe has been doing both the daytime custodial work, as well as the nighttime shift.
We have been staying after school every day to try and help him by taking out the trash from the classrooms and vacuuming. The equipment that Joe has to use is very old and doesn’t work well. When we vacuum the classrooms, it takes a really long time because the vacuum is unreliable. We can’t imagine having to do all of this work alone.
Joe is a friend to every student. We don’t know a lot about his personal life or needs, but we know how hard he works. With how isolated he has been, and how hard he has had to work, we want Joe to know how much we appreciate him and how much everyone loves him.
We were touched by Owen and Dane’s message and decided to surprise Joe during the last week of school! Watch the video above to see his reaction.
I love that the kids know enough to appreciate what he does and nominated him. Janitors don’t get enough praise for all they do.
Yep. School is like a little city. Many people are involved in making it work but too often all we think about are the teachers and students.
Middle school I use to go around with our custodian and help clean up things. He did it because I was "the problem child" but he didn't see me that way and it meant a lot. Even does now.
Spiffy kids. They appreciate the people that make their life easier.

Now there's a word for we don't see enough of and we should see more of... Spiffy!
This is the America we all long for. Imagine, if all governments, Federal, State, and Local, treated their constituents the way this man treats his young charges. Thank you Joe...

I am from NJ. I never thought I would watch Idaho local news, but Nate won my heart through his dedication to JJ and Tylee. I, now, watch everything he focuses on. Thank you boys for being such caring students. Having worked in a school for 19 years the custodians don't get the credit they deserve. You can see the love Joe feels for his students and his job. Enjoy your gifts Joe you certainly deserve them.

Thank You, Pam !! My Family And Everybody At The Big Church We Went To Loved Our Custodians, A Husband & Wife Team Who Both Retired After 50 Years Of Service. Everything Was Always So Clean And Just Like It Was Supposed To Be At Church Inside And Out. I Loved Going Thru The Line On Wed Nite For Supper At Church Where Mr. & Mrs. Washington Cooked And Served Everybody Their Good Food !!
The parents of these boys have done a great job! They have raised some terrific young men.
These kids have some great parents. These kids are more mature and appreciative than a lot of adults. Well done!!
Cmon you can give him more than that. Let him spend some time with the teachers students and the families. 27 years he is like a family at the school.
I said the same thing just now i posted a shame on you for acting like $50 bucks was a gift i had a rant im horrified.
He got 2 gift cards. One was for a certain choice of stores. The other was for some hunting and fishing store. So, he got $100 in gift cards. Still, I'm thinking, "Is that all?" They probably could have asked some of the families in the community to make a donation and gathered a lot more than that.

Fair play for the Lads that did that, all those that helped him during Covid. He came across as a really nice guy. Well deserved.
I'm glad I was raised to know the janitor deserves the same humanity as anybody else.. people look down on those kind of jobs but they're the ones who make the world go round

Loves his job and does it very well no matter how much he makes. He shows dignity, pride, and caring.
I'm so impressed with his speaking skills, my niece is deaf and I know how difficult that can be to master. Then to be so loved on top of it, he really has a blessed life.

Janitors and Custodians are the silent workers who more often than not make the biggest difference and impact on all of our daily lives simply by keeping the
environment clean like the floors vacuumed, the tables wiped down, the bathrooms sanitized, the windows washed, and trash emptied and so much more and
they are rarely even recognized let alone thanked for what they do. It really doesn't ever cross most of our minds what they do and how much they effect our lives
Image what your daily routine would be like everyday if you didn't have the cleaning crew or the single janitor in this case doing what they do to prepare the environment
for the next day.
They are some of the true silent hero's.
Bless on Joe for showing care and giving students feels safely at a school.
