- Former head of the British Army, General Lord Dannatt, has told Sky News the "case for an increase in defence spending is growing" in order to be ready for the threats we face.
He says it's not about preparing to fight a war but "having the military capacity to deter aggression from other people", to the extent that the UK is "vulnerable if Ukraine fails".
The interview started though with a question about the government's new definition on extremism and whether or not it has become politicised.

Uhh, I think clowns like this have blown the considerable defence budget on aircraft carriers that don’t work and are now completely at the mercy of supersonic rockets. 50 tanks in service? We spend more on our senior brass.
They have wasted money and equipped for a different conflict. Typical useless government
I believe that the UK has one of the largest contingents of command staff. Jobs for the toffs after sacking all of the working class soldiers.
End all food and drink deliveries into the Borough of Westminster.
Stop feeding the beast.
We don’t need more money to military until they learn how to spend it. To much waste, not enough value. We should buy off the shelf rather than develop for lots of equipment.
2.5-3% GDP for defence
That is equivalent to around 1.25% in old money. Russia managed to keep inflation down in the West, but making an enemy of them has had severe detrimental economic costs added to the collective West.
@@richardmarsden5610Putin is the one who made Russia the enemy by invading countries and launching a chemical attack on British soil.
3% minimum!
Russia armed industries are majority state owned, the money returns to the tax payers. In the UK it all goes to the oligarchs, mainly American ones
If the UK is to rebuild its military then we would need to re-join the EU as a full member. Our economy is a joke.
BS😂
Yet he didn't speak up when he was employed
Pension.
They can't,,,, they would be silenced and sacked or made to dissapear
Why are there no volunteers now in Western Ukraine, and mercenaries from Colombia/Venezuela, are being brought over!
because ukraine was under instant threat of being overrun so people lent a hand to push the russians back.. now ukraine has enter a slogging match with russia the interest isn't the same.. and its about manpower now.. which ukraine has.. in a way that would make more volunteers have less impact plus ukraine military is better trained. What they need now is equipment.
Maybe some people actually arent war torn psychopaths did that ever occur to people like this guy?
Tell that to Putin.
@@XTSu-sl1bb Putin did not want a war in Ukraine. His hand was forced by the arrogant and two faced so called west. The west thought it was going to be a walk in the park and Russia would collapse within a year and it back fired on them. The USA played Europe and Europe are still too proud and ignorant to admit they've made a colossal cock up. Ukraine was naive to trust the USA by seeking NATO membership and they are paying for it as we speak. The west seeks war. Always have.
Never great to be a losing side-kick of an unstable military alliance of a declining global power.
Overinvesting in rhetoric.
Explain to me, in detail, why we need a bigger army, larger fleet, if two nuclear armed countries ever go to war with each other.
Defence Companies need orders for profits.
@@everready800 which is the correct answer!
We are foolishly relying solely on the nuclear capability as a deterrence. Our conventional capabilities should provide sufficient deterrence without resorting to nuclear capability. At present, that situation does not exist. Proper investment in conventional war fighting capability is an investment in peace.
I suspect it's to battle things out with proxy wars.
Nuclear forces can't fight each other for obvious reasons.
But we can tough it out by each taking sides in wars between non-nuclear countries.
I think that pretty much sums it up.
@@scarterw2 feel free to look at virtually every proxy war the West has supported since WW II to see it’s a ludicrous strategy.
So basically uk is nothing without buddies usa
@aircrafter7505 That's not what the German airforce found out
Hhhmm, why then do the US always seek UK military support in those pesky military misadventures they set out on
Well explained by someone who knows the threat.
We need to build our military back up now. Russia is weakened and conflict is inevitable.
My father Borislav ( 1936 2013 ) wrotte in 1998 to Belgrade Youguoslavia , from Moscow Russia , where he was working for Serbien Secret Police , RDB , quoting L P Rešetnikov , saying , the UK , has , allready , more than 50 , military men spessiel forces in Montenegro to deffend the President There MiLo Djukanović . .. 😐
the whole country if not the world knows we have basically no army. wwe want it too. were sick of it being shrunk
Imagine what we could have done with the 100+ billion that the Tories wasted.
YES how many new hospitals and staff would that have created to SAVE LIVES
Nato should put the minimum at 3.5%
It is rumoured that the "Prince of Wales" is to be sold off for a song, 7,000,000 quid spent on a 2nd showboat when there is no money for a full compliment of aircraft for even one of them.
It’s hilarious really, let’s get rid of the defence completely and learn Russian at school
We should extend that part of the armed forces responsible for *fuelling* defence, build National Service into it, and base national security on public ownership of enough (we've got far more than enough) of our offshore wind to be able to power the country *including the armed forces*. Presently we must take into account who will supply our forces with energy whenever we wish to 'project power'. That's an insanely vulnerable position to be in.
Bold statements while member of a gang who can even fight without the distant cousin. Just ridiculous.
2.5% asap.
Public defence should come first - in form of atomic shelters and survival plans. Before any thing else.
Or here's a wild suggestion! How about listen to Russia's security concerns from many years ago? A neutral Ukraine would've sufficed. Instead the west ignored Putin's red lines and did the opposite. And now we're supposed to be surprised that Ukraine ended up being ruined.
We are no longer part of europe brussels should be raising a european army they always wanted one no british army should be fighting in europe thats why we did brexit..
And lets not forget a european army were routed in 8 weeks in 1940
We have given away a huge amount of our military equipment to be stolen or embarrassingly destroyed in Ukraine.
The 1st duty of this government is to help Tory friends with cash and contracts and to ensure when they get voted out, the ministers have good jobs to go to
We could be on there agenda if Ukraine fails got to build up our armed forces write now or face the consequences.?
He should go and fight putin if he things that
Oh stop with this PROPAGANDA ‼️
If the younger generation continues to roam with rainbow flags, beer cans, losing their physical & mental strength, we will become more & more vulnerable.
Who cares?
@@ch0293 Except those who are eating free, everyone else in 🇬🇧 care. Bye.
There is an invasion happening here in Dorset and none takes note...💁♀️
Doesn’t the British army now knock off for evening Muslim prayers, like that army advertisement says.
The British army has plenty of alcohol for its soldiers. Can Tommy fight without it ?
The dumb comments were more interesting than the video.
He’s right.
🤣🤣🤣
This country is fucked anyway , who gives a toss anymore
Your weak
Yes weak!
We don’t need more military spending. Ever.

The immigrants will be getting all this money
how much of the nations gdp is spent on immigrants?

@@johnadam2885 not sure but I was asking a question
People need to be proud to be British, and proud to wear a military uniform.
Looking at the disrespect certain parts of the country show to the poppy and the union flag, and the way the police stood by and this this happen, makes me think that even doubling the salary of our service personnel might not be enough to entice recruitment.
