What makes this flashmob one of the best performances of "Ode to Joy" is the way it starts so simply, with a lone bass; and then gradually builds in majesty as more musicians join in. I like to think that the audience in the square were surprised when the singers began: "Oh! Those aren't just random dudes watching the performance; that's a *chorus*!"

Happy 200th birthy, Ode an die Freude (Ode to Joy). It is was May 7th, 1824 that Beethoven premiered this 9th and final symphony in the Karnthnerthor Theater in Vienna. It is considered by many to be his triumphant work, and even those who submit other works as his paramouth will agree there is something truly uplifting about his last completed symphony. As most people know but it worth mentioning for those who do not know, Ludwig von Beethoven was completely deaf by the time he wrote this symphony. He wrote every note strictly by the power of his mind and his previous experience with music. That alone is a testament to his skilll and devotion to music. A bittersweet note to end on, it is true that Beethoven did not actually conduct his final symphony. This was no insult to him since he was aware of his condition, but he dutifully stood at the conductor's post while the orchestra was discretely lead by Michael Umlauf. But that is not the moment I speak of. That is but the setup. When the performance was over, Beethoven was so distraught and uncertain of how the audience would react that he did not turn around. Some argue it was because he was not able to hear his own orchestra, which was true, but it was also because he could not bear the thought of failing the audience. In a moment of sympathy, the contraltro, Caroline Unger, left her place, came to Beethoven, and gently turned him around so he could witness the rousing applause. It is reported upon seeing the delight of the people, Beethoven whispered in wonder, "Mien Meisterstruck.' ("My masterpiece").
I sincerely hope Beethoven could hear this epic masterpiece with his own ear……Hard to imagine he wrote this while deaf and couldn’t know how it will be remembered hundreds years later

You know goddamn well that Beethoven is a genius when he creates this music without even hearing it and knows damn well that this music will touch human emotions, even centuries after.
Yeah probably could have made your point about a great man without lacing your comment with blasphemy and profanity, I'm sure Ludwig would agree that a man who can't express himself without resorting to bad language shouldn't express himself so loudly.
The point is not that Beethoven couldn't heard what he created. We are the unluck ones, because we will never know for sure what he created in his mind. Maybe this was even greater when he composed this, but he couldn't do the fine adjustments to it.
It’s been 10 years and this remains one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen, the way the chorus grows is perfect. I’m sitting on the edge and I feel like whenever I’m ready to jump Beethoven had his hand on my shoulder, holding me back.

In my opinion, this is one of the most beautiful videos in the entire internet. The Ode to joy / Die Ode an die Freude is just one of the biggest symbols for love joy and humanity.
To this day, it always makes me smile that after hundreds of years, music by Beethoven and the likes is still played, applauded and listened to by young and old, from Rap fan to metal head, from EDM fans to country fans, they all heard Ode to Joy in particular at some point in their life, and to this day I believe that Beethoven's 9th Symphony is the closest we ever got to perfection, not just because it is in my opinion the greatest musical piece ever written but because it captivates everyone, no matter who you are, you will stop and listen to the Ode to Joy.
I absolutely love this video and always come back to it. The musicians that have mastered their instrument, the vocalists who have mastered their voices and the pure joy in the audiences faces brings me pure joy!
At 70 years old I never thought tears would fill my eyes whilst watching something on CZcams. I have looked at several downloads of this, one of my favourite pieces of music, but since finding this flashmob version last year I watch it at least once a week. I’m only 29 years old and I was brought to tears by this amazing piece of one of humanities greatest works, at 70 I can’t imagine the experience and wisdom you could share with others, too many people my generation are shortsighted and lack any original thoughts in them it’s sad to think about relying on the old with nothing new in the works

@@sniperpig049 He very clearly wrote "Alle Menschen werden Brüder" and not "Alle Europäer werden Brüder". Whether or not he included POC in Menschen doesn't matter. The author's intent doesn't matter when everyone else interprets it differently. Besides, there are plenty of Europeans who are black or asian.
@@strange144 black and asian are black and asian. Not european. European is a part of a subspecies, not a nationality. Beethoven was not a stupid man, when he says alle menschen, he's referring to the constant wars between europe and themselves.
no matter how old this video is (and hopefully will grow), this is the spirit I wish from europe. and basically, the world people coming together, in awe of one another, enjoying the time together. it's a simple as that.
"You lot. You spend all your time thinking about dying. Like you’re going to get killed by eggs or beef or global warming or asteroids. But you never take the time to imagine the impossible. That maybe you survive."
This song isn't just about Europe the EU cut parts of the lyrics out for their anthem for a reason. The lyrics are joy to the *world* where each man becomes brother. I don't blame Eu for using this song tho it's great song about unity but the reality is it's the anthem when the entire planet is unified. Anthem of world peace. Beethoven knew the score. Ps this is the global version it doesn't repeat the first verse of the poem like the EU version they sing the entire poem..
I get chills every single time I watch this video. I come back to it every so often. It truly is magical and shows how anybody can be brought together by music. I would give anything to have witnessed this in person! Superb!!!
Imagine you are a 6 year old in the crowd.. you see the unfolding of the events.. shook your head with the rhythm.. fast forward 15 years later - you became a musician , music is the only thing left in your life , you don't play videogames or hangout unnecessarily with friends because music is the ellixr of your soul which keep you moving.... I had a similar experience .....
Beethoven was, as many know, was totally deaf when he composed this, his final work. Everything we hear, all the intricacies, each voice, each note, was heard only in the ear of his soul as he put it to paper.
I love watching this. It always brings tears to my eyes. The music is ABSOLUTELY beautiful, but the enjoyment on the faces of the people in the crowd is priceless!!!
To me its because it feels "real". you see and hear people going about their days. Its not some fancy auditorium with only "nicely dressed" people in it. Its the real world on a real street and this just feels like the way music (this piece especially) is meant to be played. It is played for the people. Truly an ode to joy.
This was not random. It wasn't a flash mob. It is simply a commercial for Sabadel, a French bank. The musicians were either hired by the bank or were bank employees. Naturally, none of this makes the performance any less glorious.
Hello friend, I’m sorry my fellow countrymen are too stupid to understand that sentiment. We are born of the same cloth and united we will always be 🇪🇺
Such a magic clip… The crowd busily bustling about shopping & dining in the square, not really connecting with one another… then some impromptu music starts off quaintly enough… & more musicians flow into the staging area, & people start to realise something very special is unfolding.. Children start to dance & play to the most classic of musical pieces of the ages.. The joy lights up every soul in that square, creating a memory for a life time. Humanity at its finest
I'd rather say the best part is seeing ADULTS enjoying the music. Kids are wowed by pretty much anything, but once you grown up, less and less things "wow" your life...like the guy at 4:09 with long hair clearly saying "WOW" that to me is amazing!!!

+frost flower I don't understand how Justin Bieber ruins Beethoven's music.
@@beardedloon77 Beethoven was belligerent and swore like a sailor.
If only he were able to hear the sound the master piece he created 🥲
He could feel the music bro
The point is not that Beethoven couldn't heard what he created. We are the unluck ones, because we will never know for sure what he created in his mind. Maybe this was even greater when he composed this, but he couldn't do the fine adjustments to it.

It’s been 10 years and this remains one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen, the way the chorus grows is perfect.
I’m sitting on the edge and I feel like whenever I’m ready to jump Beethoven had his hand on my shoulder, holding me back.
I am certain that Beethoven would be delighted. His motto for his music was, born from the heart, may it go to the heart.
@@fabiopaolobarbieri2286 200 years past his time and it still does.
I know it’s a trope to say this today but there will never be another man like him, I like a good range of music, I’m that guy who goes from Lamb of God to Salt ‘n’ Peppa to Bach in the space of 15 mins but nothing compares to Beethoven.

I can Netflix & Chill the sappiest of the sappy chick flicks with my girlfriend without so much as a sniffle. However no many how many times I've watched this (and I'm pretty sure it's over 100 now), each and every time it makes my face a watery, sloppy, mess. The gesture from the orchestra, the quality of the music, the positive effect it has on the unsuspecting audience, especially the children. It's all so overwhelming with beauty that I cannot watch this video without it ending in a runny nose and trickling tears down a very wide smile in awe of one of most beautiful things I've ever seen.

I AGREE. I have seen this many, many times and each time i am filled with emotion and end up crying.

At 70 years old I never thought tears would fill my eyes whilst watching something on CZcams. I so wish I had been there and seen it personally. I would have been one of those happy astonished faces.
After watching it myself for the first time, I can see why and I agree with you 100%
I’m only 29 years old and I was brought to tears by this amazing piece of one of humanities greatest works, at 70 I can’t imagine the experience and wisdom you could share with others, too many people my generation are shortsighted and lack any original thoughts in them it’s sad to think about relying on the old with nothing new in the works

1000 years from now, when we're gone - I hope this music remains to show that we could have done great things.

Instead I'll hope that a thousand years from now we're still playing it, and have proven we can *do* great things.
Why do you assume humanity will perish within a millennium?
@@garibaldi4971 Humanity is doing nothing to convince me we'll survive as a species.
"You lot. You spend all your time thinking about dying. Like you’re going to get killed by eggs or beef or global warming or asteroids. But you never take the time to imagine the impossible. That maybe you survive."
This is the ideal of Europe, expressed in music.

There are so many performances of this music but I keep coming back to this one. Something truly magical about it all...
To me its because it feels "real". you see and hear people going about their days. Its not some fancy auditorium with only "nicely dressed" people in it. Its the real world on a real street and this just feels like the way music (this piece especially) is meant to be played. It is played for the people. Truly an ode to joy.
When you're walking down the street and the greatest piece of music of all time randomly breaks out.
This was not random. It wasn't a flash mob. It is simply a commercial for Sabadel, a French bank. The musicians were either hired by the bank or were bank employees. Naturally, none of this makes the performance any less glorious.
