      The saddest part about Oin's death: He never even got to see Moria itself. The guardian in the depths killed him at the ancient gates. Balin died as hero and king of Moria and Ori is the skeleton holding the chronicles you can see in the first Lord of the Rings movie.

      Not entirely true, since the company came from the Lonely Mountain, they most surely entered Moria via the Eastern Gate. The guardian stalks the waters at the Western Gate and the dwarves had already been in Moria a while, before Oin was killed.

      @KermitTheArchitect Před 7 lety +32

      Meh. Read some philosophy, as dragon Smaug was one of the alter ego of Thorin Oakenshield, Alfred was the alter ego of Bard. He was extremely well portrayed. As Thorin beat one his ego on the golden mirror, he beat another in the ice mirror. Trial of water and gold. Bard how ever, he did not beat his ego, he tamed it. That is a whole different perspective between the allegory of man and dwarf.
      This does not mean I wouldn't want these scenes though. They look awesome.

    • @hughmilner7013
      @hughmilner7013 Před 7 lety +48

      I agree that Alfred is an excellent alter ego of Bard, but the problem is that he outlives his role. Alfred ceases to be relevant once Bard slays his internal demons, choosing to take up his ancestral mantle as defender of the people of Dale and to kill Smaug. But by the time of the actual Battle of Five Armies, Alfred's role is finished, and his absurdity detracts from the otherwise powerful scenes of the dwarves and men of Dale taking up arms to fight the creatures of evil. He could just have easily have been assumed dead in Smaug's attack, or be left behind once the scene of Bard sparing him is done and his role in Bard's character arc is done.

  • @KTChamberlain

    To me, the saddest thing about the deaths of Thorin, Fili, and Kili is that many people who've read the book often tend to forget that they died, myself included. It's not until you get to reading Fellowship of the Ring where you're reminded that they did die. To the movie's credit, people now won't forget their deaths and how sad it is, especially with the funeral scene in the extended cut, which is something worthy of merit, because the saddest thing about being a fallen warrior is to be forgotten.

The armies of evil were already set and would have destroyed men and elves and dwarves with or without Azog's leadership. All Thorin did was sending himself and his nephews to their deaths. +Not Visible It was removed because they wanted to give you the movie during the release date at Christmas same as every LOTR and Hobbit movie. They were behind schedule and CGI wasn't finished for most of the scenes so the Battle of the Five Armies we got at the beginning was essentially the half-baked movie of whatever they could muster up.

    A little fun fact about King Dáin ll. Ironfoot:
    It was him that decided the battle of Azanulbizar in the books at there mere age of 5, here's the story:
    Dáin was a little child back the when he has slain Azog. He was enraged over the death of his father Náin who was killed by Azog (alongside many brave dwarves!). Everyone was afraid of Azog but the little Ironfoot hunted him down and killed him while he was heading back inside Moria. That means Dáin didn't even kill the greatest enemy of the dwarves as child but also entered their old cursed home briefly. From the moment of his return he was forever worshiped as hero by every single dwarf. Especially after he reported that he had seen Durin's curse (The Balrog) with his own eyes and that he knew that the dwarves
    could never retrieve their ancient home as long as the curse remained.
    Another book fact about Ironfoot's role in the siege of the Erebor during the war of the ring:
    Dáin ll. Ironfoot was a good and just king, during the war of the ring he was over 250 years old (That's as old and rare as a 100 years old human) and wise. As the mighty Easterlings came to siege the Erebor, the dwarves along side their allies of Dale had to retreat back in the mountain after a bloody combat. As King Brand of Dale fell during this, it was Dáin who bravely faced the armies of darkness, buying the dwarves and humans enough time to get to safety and defending his friend's corpse. He fell eventually in the most epic of ways. His son, King Thorin lll. Stonehelm should avenge his father later but that's another story...
    King Dáin ll. Ironfoot truly is one of my most favourite characters ever and I thank J.R.R. Tolkien for this.
    I'll end my little tribute to him with a quote of Gandalf speaking about this tragic loss:
    "I should call that a heavy loss, if it was not a wonder rather that in his great age he could still wield his axe as mightily as they say he did, standing over the body of King Brand before the gate of Erebor, until the darkness fell." - Gandalf

    @peterparkour5752 Před 3 lety +4

    Poor Dain. He's taking this especially hard... And rightly so... he's lost a family member... And one whom he Loved so deeply. You can see his sorrows overflowing without him ever saying a word. He mourns his victory not because he's won the battle... But because he's lost so bloody much than he's won. and it all began with Smaug the dragon and a very sickly king of a relative... The dwarves have lost more than most can ever bear on even the strongest of shoulders... And still they stand victorious.. but at the cost of an even larger burden... One which grows ever so much larger, the more they lose their kinfolk to these wars... Wars, madness, immense emotional burdens, a dragon stealing your home and eating your kin... And worse yet... Being looked down upon by an entire race of elves... And being hunted by orcs and balrogs... Even losing kinfolk to the unspeakable things of the caves of moria... Things even Gandalf dares never to speak of.
    But that will come later...
    God bless you all. And don't forget to read the books as well as watch the movies. I'd recommend doing so before or even after... Whichever way you choose it's perfectly fine.. in reading it beforehand you can see what the author sees before what the director interprets... In seeing the movie first you have a preset way to visualize the characters and can watch the movie without critiquing every change or movie making choice with the story or its characters and can appreciate a different perspective. or if you don't want to read the books at all or watch the movie and all..that's your choice as well but both are very entertaining and are sure to capture your imagination. God bless and have a great day.

      Agreed. The old friendship between Dwarves and Elves was shattered after Smaug conquered Erebor. Yet after Smaug's death, Thranduil fought alongside the Dwarves at Erebor, and helped defeat the endless legions of Azog the Defiler, who was killed by Thorin, at the cost of his own life.
      Dain II was highly distrustful of Thranduil, and vice-versa as Thranduil never forgave the dwarves for refusing him the promised Gems of Lasgalen.
      Thranduil would have been present here, wearing those Gems, as a sign that the old promise was kept, witnessing and reckognising Dain II as the King under the Mountain, restoring the old bond between Dwarves and Elves.

The line of succession is what would be described as 'Agnatic primogeniture' which means it's passed down from father to his sons i.e. it goes only through the male line, unless ofc the male line is completely extinguished. Dain was always next in line after Thorin.

    Why the hell wasn't Tauriel present during the funeral??? I would've thought that she would be there to bid one last farewell to Kili!!!
    & why did the surviving Dwarves of Erebor elect to proclaim Dain their new King under The Mountain when he refused to come to their aid until the last moment??? Sure Dain showed up with his army in the 3rd film's climatic final arc to fight for Thorin first against Thrandril & his Mirkwood Elves than against Azog & his Orc forces but let's not forget that just before the group first set off on their grand quest to reclaim The Lonely Mountain from Smaug in the 1st film, Thorin went to convince Dain to help them fight to take back their kingdom & Dain refused to do so leaving them to do it all on their own!!! I don't know about you guys but if I were 1 of the Dwarves in Thorin's company, I'd have some serious reservations about & anger towards naming as my new liege a guy who refused to show up to lend a hand until only after we had done all the dirty work period :(
