  • This short video share how I have set up my 2021 eCat Catrike 559. We only ride on rails to trails or local and state trails and have for years. We have progressed from carbon fiber Trek Madones to Specialized Como eBikes and finally to this Catrike for me and a full suspension Ecat Dumont Catrike for my wife. I will feature her Catrike in another video. As in our business we are always looking for the most efficient products and systems to add to our recumbent Catrikes to make the rides enjoyable and safe.
    Here are some links to the vendors we used to purchase and outfit our trikes.:
    Although I purchased my Catrike 559 at a local bike shop, we purchased my wife's Catrike Dumont at The Hostel Shoppe in Stevens Point Wisconsin and because of their great service we have continued to purchase other accessories, side bags and winter training bike rollers at The Hostel Shoppe.

    Panniers and top bag on the rack are from Arkel:

    Dual water bottle holder is from Terra Cycle:

    Hydration System from Terra Cycle purchased at The Hostel Shoppe:

    Crank Brothers Eggbeater pedals

    Since this video we have also added a side mount bar and Ortlieb bag from The Hostel Shoppe which makes accessing my phone and Osmo Pocket 2 camera much easier:
    The seat mount bracket for folding Catrikes can be found here:

    and the Ortlieb bag which I love because it opens away from you and also has a simple magnetic closure can be found here:

    Sweet trike, like your headlight ideas. I may go to that on my Dumont.

      The longer we ride these trikes, the more we adjust what accessories we need and/or how they are arranged on our trikes. Thanks for watching the video and we will be adding more videos this season.

      Thanks...it is always a work in progress trying to have what you need while minimizing what you carry :) I love my 559 and my wife loves her Dumont. Her setup is a little lighter since she has me as the "mule" to carry the just in case tools, backups and such.....

    I love my Eggbeaters, been riding me Catrike Expedition with them for 10 years. Easy in & out and they allow float so my knees don't hurt like my older SPD's did.

      I love my eggbeaters as well and I also added pedal spacers on the crank to allow better alignment with my ankles, legs and hips.

    Awesome set up!! I am in the market for an e-trike at the moment. Currently debating going with the e-cat 559/Dumont (torque based) vs Utah Custom e-559/Dumont w/ Bafang 750W (cadence based); Trident Trike e-Stowaway II (amazing price + standard features and manufactured 10 minutes from me in NC).
    Also trying to decide if I want a suspension trike (Dumont) or no suspension (559)--hoping that my local trike store will get them both in stock soon so that I can try them both back-to-back to see which I prefer.
    Happy Riding!

      When we wanted to purchase our two Catrikes back in March weI could not find a second Dumont, so we got the Dumont for my wife, which she loves and I simply ride my 559 with the tires slightly above the lowest suggest PSI and I think I get a good smooth ride for the most part. Good luck with your new trike

    Thats a great setup! My wife and I have two 559's on order and hope to have them soon. Can you include a list of your accessories and or a link to help find them?

      @OurTopSpots  Před 2 lety +1

      That is a good idea to list all of the items I have added to my 559. I added a side mounted ortleib bag yesterday to have a place to have quick access to my Osmo Pocket 2 camera.

    Love your video and your add ons are very appealing.
    I'm 70 and a newbie so the bike LOOKS light. But I'd be very interested in a ballpark figure for its actual weight.

    • @OurTopSpots
      @OurTopSpots  Před 2 lety

      The bike itself weighs in at 39.5 lbs.and I don't think that includes the Bosch Motor which I think is another 6.3 pounds plus the battery which is another 6 pounds. Depending on what gear I have in the panniers (side bags) they can add another 20-25 lbs. I just use the small top bag on the rack when riding on our local bike path and add the panniers when we ride other destination bike trails when I want more camera equipment, drone, or backup tools, tires and locks. I love my 559 and my wife loves her full suspension Catrike Dumont.

    Hi, nice trike! Is that a “standard” rear rack or a trike specific rack? I have a 559 on order and wondering if I can swap over some upright bike pieces and parts.

    Cool set up how do you have the flag mounted? can you show the clip or device that it’s attaches to.

    • @OurTopSpots
      @OurTopSpots  Před 2 lety +2

      The base of the flag is placed in a typical flag mount located on the rear axle. Then I use two wire ties to secure it to the rear luggage rack which keeps it more upright and less tipping to the left or right in high cross winds and may interfere with other cyclists or pedestrians

    Wow. Looks like you have thought of everything! I have a 559 and 700 and I am a “minimalist” other than the basics. Enjoy your travels . Btw…what does this trike weigh with all of the gear?

    • @OurTopSpots
      @OurTopSpots  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for your thoughts! My wife and I have followed lean management practices in both our business and personal lives for 30 years and with my setup you might think I missed the memo :). The Arkel bags aren't really heavy themselves and I think each bag might weigh in around 10-15 pounds if I remember right. Six pounds of that in one bag (on each of our bikes) is the second battery we carry for each bike. Other than that we carry the usual...ENO hammocks, locks, tires, first aid kit, latex gloves for chain issues or if we need to help another biker with their chain.At 6'4" and 260 pounds......what's a few more pounds :)

    • @markfeldman6509
      @markfeldman6509 Před 2 lety +1

      @@OurTopSpots all good points. When you toss in the necessary tools and accessories the weight adds up quickly. I don’t camp and sweats ride trails and return home. Hence just spare tubes , some tools and good. At 6’ and 165 lbs I zip along in my 559 and rocket ship 700! Have a great holiday season

    I really like trikes, but I think that they are death-machines. Especially on the street. I ride an e-bike, and even I have a hard time seeing them(I have very good eyesight yet). Just not visible enough to other motorists.

    • @OurTopSpots
      @OurTopSpots  Před 2 lety +2

      I think Death Machines may be a little strong :) we choose not to ride on the streets even when we rode two wheel bikes simply because of the extreme danger of distracted drivers. You could do everything right and they will still hit you because of their lack of attention. Trike riders have said they tend to have drivers give them more room because the drivers aren't sure what they are overtaking and often think it may be some sort of vehicle for a physically challenged person. Here in the midwest all of the bike fatalities I hear about are in regard to two wheel bikes...some of the deaths are bikers faults (running stop signs) and some are car drivers faults. MY suggestion is to drive defensively, on a trike use a flag and flashing lights to help drivers be aware that you are there. On a trike, bright clothing does not make much of a difference because you are sitting down and the seat covers up your clothes. This is why we only ride bike trails but we understand some people choose to ride to and from work on their bikes and may not have access to great bike trails. Thanks, for your comment!
