David, you've convinced me that riding a trike is the 'medicine' I need, for both my mental and physical health. No matter the purchase price, a trike prescription will last much longer than any medicine anyone can purchase at the pharmacy. Thank you!

Im 63 and have MS, RA, Imune Deficiency, and other health issues. I had breast cancer in 2018 and thanks to my mammogram and the grace of God, I beat it. That phenomenon of feeling good while and after a ride has never diminished. If anything, it's gotten stronger!

I sure relate to riding a route that's quiet. Since I have no trails, my riding is done on residential streets. There are a couple of neighborhoods removed enough from street traffic that it affords me a relaxing silent ride (until some neighbor starts cutting the lawn). 😏
I also find myself waving, or at least giving a nod, to just about anyone I encounter who glances at me as I ride past. Usually they will nod or wave back. Makes the trip a little more pleasant.
As someone who also has cancer I avoid taking the trike out in the middle of a summer day with a high UV index. I don't get out on the trike until early evening when the sun is low in the sky. So far this summer, I've been riding almost every evening for at least one hour.

Out riding my trike is just such a happy place for me! Filling my senses with the change in seasons, my eyes with the scenery my ears with the sounds of birds and wind rushing past, my skin with the sun's warmth (or not!), and the sense of the machine beneath me ridden well. On yesterday's ride I encountered two young does and a woodchuck doing a suicide dash under my seat between my wheels-while I was moving along! I think that left both of us surprised and unscathed! Just found this video and have to agree that you are spot on in your observations. A few years ago I was diagnosed with melanoma that was starting to spread to my lymph nodes. All good now, but it was a very trying time as I was also going through a divorce as well. I started riding my bike and the therapeutic effects were what saved my sanity. I've been riding ever since, but recently I have been fighting RA and I'm starting to look at bents as an alternative to traditional biking. Thanks for the video and I wish you good health!

Keep the great spirit and positive attitude and you will beat all of the health complications. I am exclusively a trail rider as I am blessed with many great nearby trails. Occasionally I venture onto some roads as it is a necessity but never by choice! You are so right about panniers and bags. Just like golf bags…..every time you go out something else gets tossed in until end of season when it can’t be lifted. Hence I have become a minimalist just carrying spare tubes, co2 inflators and a universal tool. Also switched to a collapsible light weight canvas golf bag that I carry without any of the junk. KISS principle…..keep it simple stupid. Best wishes and please feel better and keep riding. Your tips are all spot on for everybody.

After 13 years on these recumbent trikes, I agree with all you say! Point by point commentary from my triangular head:
    1) Trails are indeed not only much more fun, but also so much safer and mentally relaxing. Most of my riding over the years has been around cars, except for rides into the Coast Range, where the rural farm and ranch lands are very peaceful, and once up in elevation and far from town, the human habitation stops, and then I'm totally in a natural setting, my only potential nemesis being cougars and bears (but have never had an issue yet ... now, if Murphy's Law holds up, my next ride into the hills will surely bring me face to face, haha). The Coast Highway 101 is loaded with cars and motorhomes through the summer, so I stay off it as much as possible, but when I did my Pacific Coast tour, I had little choice!
    2) On a trike, we have to be friendly because people are curious about these things and seem to gravitate to us when we are hanging around somewhere. On my trips, I always have had many people just come up and start talking about the trike, often curious about the nature of my disability, as they often assume the trike is some sort of a very fancy wheelchair device. I have found that recumbent trikes are a super conversation starter with complete strangers. And it's a great way to spread the word about these super fun modes of transport!
    3) Around age 37, I finally wised up regarding sun exposure, primarily from my study of the effects, and how I say my skin not be as soft and supple with sun exposure. I am hopeful that the past thirty-five years fully covered and protected from the UV rays has kept me free of any cancer issues, but I do keep in mind that cancers can take many years to manifest themselves, so I remain vigilant. It is good to know that your situation began with a skin cancer that spread elsewhere. I did not know that. My cycling keeps me warmer than most cyclists out there who wear short pants and shirts, or even tank tops. Sure, I would love to enjoy the cooler internal temps, but keeping the sun off my skin means I just ride hotter. My clothing is 100% cotton because it breathes much better than synthetics, and keeps me as cool as possible. I know a lady who has long told me that I needed to get more sun for my health, and she is a sun worshiper ... well, now she has had three skin cancer operations on her face, a good lesson for me.
    4) This is very important, in fact, critical. I have done chain and tire work in the garage just so I would have the knowledge for when it happens on the road. For me, this has been especially true because my first year of triking I began pedaling to southern California, and there was no help for me most of the way because the route was very remote. On my Pacific Coast trip, I had a chain break going up a super steep hill, panniers fully loaded with every thing I needed to survive on the road. Well, if I did not fix that chain, I would just sit there until hell freezes over because no one else was there to do the work for me. The chain has sucked back down into the chain tube on my ICE trike because of gravity and where the chain broke, so it took forever to get the job done and get back on the road, but I had all the tools and items I needed to do it, so while I may have been slow, I was successful. I pedaled the rest of the trip somewhat timidly, knowing that if one link had worn out, it would have friends, haha. Fortunately, no others broke. I never did replace that chain because I sold the trike that year, but I told the buyer that he needed a new chain immediately.
    5) Trikes are so much fun that for me, it's almost impossible to not enjoy the ride. Trike riding makes me smile, and feel like a kid again, because everyone knows that trikes are for kids! Take it easy ... Take a trike!
    6) The pannier volume issue is a real problem for most of us human trikers! The more bags I have, the heavier my trike gets! It is so true! I will be getting a new set of Arkel T-42 rear side panniers, on purpose so that I keep things down to a reasonable roar. I was thinking about getting another set of GT-54s like I ran for years, but I know darn well that I would indeed fill them. If a backpacker can make do with one backpack full of supplies, then as a triker, I can surely figure out how to make do with even more volume capacity that a backpacker. I like challenges, and this is one that I continually work on year after year, taking just what I need and no more. My first trip I pulled a large Rubbermaid tub on a Burly flatbed trailer, and filled it with food and supplies (in addition to my Arkel GT-54 panniers, no less). It was a BIG mistake, and I sold the trailer at the end of the trip. The best way to learn this "filling of bags" lesson is from the School of Hard Knocks! 😁

    • @DavidRidesaTrike
      @DavidRidesaTrike  Před rokem +2

      Hi Steve,
I figured we'd agree on these points. I do think most of us probably do. It's hard to justify liking road riding vs. trail riding unless you're touring or need to get somewhere. Regarding being friendly, I do believe we are social animals and need and sometimes crave that human interaction. So why not do it over something we at least, love? Trikes! And we've talked extensively about the sun and the damage it can cause. Of course, the sun hasn't always been so dangerous but over the last 60-70 years, we've managed to make it so. I tell everyone I know who's getting a new trike or bike for that matter, to be sure to know how to do those basi repairs. It's no fun being stuck anywhere and having to find a way to get home with your trike or bike. And fun, yes, that is really what it's all about!

I have been riding recumbent bikes for the last 15 years ,currently riding number 10 of the 14 bents I have bought . Unlike a diamond frame bike recumbents have far more variety and attributes . So of late I bought a cheap Terratrike Path 3 speed igh and with a bit of time and parts it is now a 20 speed . I specifically played with the gearing so that I can have 10 gears for regular riding on pavement and 5 gears for those horrible slopes of the Britannia Mines road in BC . As I am running a medium cage derailleur with 26-50 front chain rings the rear derailleur just does not take up the slack in the chain past the 5th gear. By the time I get to the fourth gear it is basically the same as my 11th anyway. When you are on a steep slope with really low gears having three wheels is a bonus as stability is paramount.

It’s nostalgic for me too. Riding trail that my dad and I walked and I did trail rides on. I recognize many landmarks which is cool too. I’ve worked about trike repairs but will do the Amlings class in the fall. I cringe each time I hear a weird noise with my tires dreading a flat. I concur with you on all 5, David. I was a school counselor during my career and definitely enjoy meeting new and interesting folks on the trails I ride.
During my recent hospital stay, my heart specialist determined that I had a Type II - MI or a heart attack on August 16, 2022. It was caused by my Afib and not coronary artery blockage. I am currently not limited in my activities, but have not ridden my recumbent trike since my hospitalization. My wife is going to go along with me this Friday for my first ride. She'll wait at the park while I venture out onto the trail. Afterward, we'll be dropping the trike off at the trike shop for it's yearly maintenance. I'm also adding a mirror on my right side.

When I experienced the Aflutter (Right Ventricle) a few years ago, I had no idea I was having it. The ablation then was successful and the Aflutter was checked.
But this time, I definitely felt I was in Afib (Left Ventricle)... A racing heart. My heart enzymes rose from 19 the day before to a 78 reading on August16. I was told that with a severe heart attack, the enzymes can reach the 500 levels. I am now on two new medications to control the Afib until I have the heart ablation on September 27, 2022.

I am retired and I find it to be the most enjoyable activity. I have a few questions could you give me an idea how fast you're going as your riding? What is your opinion about battery powered Trikes? Great list and a timely reminder about skin care. It's something I think about often over here in Thailand and although I always use SPF 50 sunscreen and cover up most of my body it's always a worry. The dangers were reinforced when I met a lovely guy who hosted me in the US when I was in Carlsbad just north of San Diego. Sadly, his wife died of skin cancer, she was also an avid cyclist. I ride paved rail trails it’s like sitting on a frying pan for the day on long rides. Our skin can only take so much. I think you being honest with your cancer will make others think I hope . Your videos are a great source and inspiration for me. The cancer on my face being removed, and then I went into shingles over my face and on my eye ball. I was close to losing my eye I was on the strongest antiviral medication for months . I was on so many meds I couldn’t hardly function. My husband was calling me his song bird as I couldn’t take care of myself. I had shingles in my mouth and up into my sinuses. It was ugly. That’s when I came across your videos. I missed spring riding my trike and I needed to ride as we know it clears our minds and always lifts us up. I needed that. My husband was getting behind on everything and I was trying to get back into life ,but I was so weak and the nerve damage was so painful it took so long to recover. I’m still dealing with nerve pain but I’m slowly weaning off the gabapentin now. I have been riding again and a couple long overnight rides. Hello, took up riding when I retired 7 years ago. Bought a Cannondale carbon in 2019. Last year during RAGBRAI, I developed severe neck pain after about 40 miles. Plus, every day I was bleeding from my bottom. I had plenty of leg strength and endurance, but the pain was too much. Bought a used Bachetta recumbent, and been training on it for a couple months. Went on group ride last week, and found that I was very unstable when I was below 6mph. Had the gears to climb steep hills but not the stability, felt like I was going to lose control any second. So, perhaps a trike is what I really need.
Here is my concern: how much speed will I lose going to a trike (from those who have done it)? I am/was a 17-18mph road guy, who did not have much trouble climbing hills on my Cannondale?

Hi Bruce. I too also always tanned very easily and seemed to have resilient skin. Things changed for me after my first kidney transplant back in 1986.I was warned that my skin would burn very easily and I would be susceptible to skin cancer(s) because of the anti-rejection medications. Having literally never burned in my life I found this hard to believe - until I very quickly did get burned. Within a few years of that I developed my first skin cancer and had dozens after that even though I did protect myself. I'm not saying this is going to happen to you and it's probably quite unlikely it will, but erring on the side of caution especially as we age, just seems to be a good idea.
