In this Video Editor Reacts, my father and I react to Melanie Martinez - Void. Not only is this our first time watching Melanie Martinez - VOID, but it's our first time listening to her also! This is one of the most shocking reactions I have ever done. Reacting to this music video definitely put Melanie Martinez on my radar. I can't wait to do more of her videos!

I just wanted to mention that after some research- my father and I both respect this music video and understand the meaning behind the music. I believe that after we go back and watch her other music videos, we will have a better understanding of what is going on here. This video was requested so much and so I decided to do this one first because I had no idea who this artist even was beforehand. Seeing her in this with no context or story of how she got here threw us off (as you can see). So, I apologize if any of this video was offensive toward her and her creative team. This was an amazing piece of work and a deep meaningful song.
PS- My father says the song sounds "happy"- in which he means the musical portion. We know the lyrics and the video itself are quite the opposite.

I agree with this comment. Honestly, much of the laughing was because the video was so unexpected. We had no idea what we were getting into, so you can imagine the constant surprise.
I will admit my comments on her dancing were not very clear. I think it is obvious she is a very good dancer. The choreography here was designed to communicate a feeling, and I believe she absolutely nailed it.
I find it interesting that many artists are connecting their music videos as if they exist in the same universe. I would have never expected this trend. But with that in mind- it is like we were invited to give our thoughts on the Marvel Universe and we started with Infinity War. Amazing film- but without any context, we would be confused for much of the movie. It would be impossible to have the emotional connection the diehard fans have watching it. On a smaller scale, that is what we were experiencing here because we started with The Void and went in blind.
I do think we were very complimentary. There was a lot to like- and I think the song is catchy. I believe the meaning is deep and what she is trying to say is important.
I apologize to any fans if this came across as disrespectful in any way. I believe if you were to watch realizing why we were laughing, you might find we had great respect for the MV and were blown away with the creativity. We found a lot to like.

I think it's best to watch Melanie's discography in the correct order because she tells a story which can be confusing to understand if you start in the middle. Her art is pretty surreal. Crybaby album is the starter of this story. I highly recommend you check out the MVs she did for that album.

she can dance, but her friend actually made this choreography. in my opinion it really matches the song, and music video, cause you know the song is about anxiety, and when you’re having an anxiety attack. you start to breathe heavy, and shake. feel dizzy. its all so perfect, but again we all have opinions and i respect yalls opinion!
I agree- I didn’t mean to make it sound like this was a simple dance. Watching it again, I can see how intricate and intentional her dance moves are. She did a great job communicating through her movements.
Melanie has been writing, self-directing and co-editiong all her MVs, Performances, etc since the beginning of her career (even wrote and directed a feature length film for her sophomore album titled “K-12”). She's quite passionate about visual art and used to be a photographer in high school before making music. This song is from her 3rd studio album called PORTALS; the final part of the “Crybaby” trilogy! Crybaby is this character/alter-ego she has created from whose perspective melanie tells a story throughout her albums. PORTALS depicts that crybaby has died now and reincarnated into a new vessel as she goes through the different stages of afterlife.
btw some of these realms and environments you saw in the MV are not fully green screen but actual sets designed by melanie and put together by the production team at dojohouse.

Melanie is a great rabbit hole to dive into. She creates the concept and directs all of her MVs, and they are all connected between them telling one big story. This song is about mental health struggle and you can see in the MV that she's inside her own body and the intrusive thoughts and self criticism (represented by many forms, including a incubation of bad thoughts inside her) are bringing her down and trying to harm her. And she tries to scape and get rid of them but they keep coming back till the end. Her own eyes are staring and judging her. She is herself inside her heart, but when she's out she goes straight to her mind which is flashing those bad thoughts...

Melanie Martinez is my all time favorite artist. She is so special in my heart because she talks about sensitive things most artists won’t. Shes not afraid to show her true self in every piece of work she puts out. VOID is my #1 favorite song and I think its worth noting she self wrote and produced this song on her own, but also directed this music video along with most (if not all) of her other music videos. Shes a very visual artist and has creative design behind everything!!
In this song its acualy not meant to be happy. melanie directly said this song was about anxiety, so it makes sense why theres so many things on the mv because it's supposed to represent anxiety. As a person who has anxiety, melanie made the lyrics so great on anxiety. And what i love about melanies film directing is you cant tell which are props or which are cgi.

I LOVE Melanie, she is just so quirky and different from everyone else! If you are interested, her first album CryBaby has a music video for every single song on the standard edition. You'd want to watch them in order. Her second album, K-12 shows Crybaby going through school, there is a full film on CZcams (the music videos are part of the movie). This music video is from her third album Portals. It's the afterlife of the character. We are hoping for a film but so far this and "Death" are the only music videos.

Haha I knew that this would be a crazy one without context, Melanie is a highly conceptual artist, her albums always stick to a very consistent theme, and she really loves to combine dark and taboo topics with a cutesy aesthetic. Portals is all about death and rebirth and she sticks to this alien/fae look the whole time. My favorite album from her is K-12, there are a ton of great songs, and they all have music videos since it’s a visual album with a movie. My personal fav is Show & Tell where she’s a dancing marionette

I honestly look so deep into her music videos, The song is really about anxiety and suicidal thoughts, The eye represents how anxiety watches her closely. the song in general is her trying to escape from those empty thoughts
I’ve personally never seen a better visual representation of what it feels like to have your own head be your worst enemy. I think her whole album concept and the new look is supposed to represent the feeling of not being your body and wanting to crawl outside of yourself and be who you really are
So this pitch meeting was probably made by Melanie walking in the room showing a PowerPoint presentation on how she wants her video. Her labels Jaw on the floor and then them allowing her because she always been a visual artist and in control of almost every part of her visuals down to costume and hair. She’s very vocal about it.

It pleased me to see you react to her, but I definitely could tell you guys had noooo idea what was happening🤣 but what got me too is when I first saw the frame of her shooting herself and seeing the moths come out striked me too but the symbolism was that the intrusive thoughts almost won but with moths coming out instead of blood, it goes to show she overcame that dark thought and was able to regain control.❤ And I agree it’s very bold to put that out there but the way she portrayed it was very meaningful✨ I would love to see you react to more videos of her

A lot of Melanie's sets are actual places. The bugs is a metaphpr for her killing her bad thoughts, as roses sprought out of the worm is her bringing the better thoughts to kill the bad ones with them. When she shot herself it symbolizes her wanted to suicide but the butterflies are a metaphor for her escaping from the suicidal thoughts
The fact she has scars from that music video and work her but off doing concerts from may30 all the way to January I think while also filming music videos and making a perfume as well as merch just for her fans ( like me) is very surprising, she has helped me throughout my whole elementary and middle school years I’m so glad I know her her songs have so many deep meanings that it makes u shed a tear. Listen to her songs or MVs and you will understand. It’s like a book but with song! I’m so glad you guys listened to her ❤

You really should start reacting to her discography in order. Becausw she tells a story about her character Crybaby. In her first album “Crybaby” she tells us about Crybaby’s traumatic childhood with drvgs and family issues, in her second album “K-12” she talks about Crybaby’s schoollife in a narcissist school (she also made a film of the album you should watch it) in the end she escape k-12 and enters a portal that lead her to the last album “Portals”, in portals, Crybaby dies and reincarnates to a pink four eyed creature that has to experience life( as the first track is “Death” and the last “Womb”). She also made a ep “After school ep” it has Nothing to do with Crybaby’s storyline but Its a really good ep.

you were correct about the rotating camera for the scene where the cave is spinning!! there are usually some behind the scenes shots or very short videos to show some work on how she creates her music videos, or at least the most for void. she was dropped onto her knees using pulleys connecting her to the ceiling for the "kneeling on a metal grater" line after she shot herself!!

The music video was unique, original, creative, and meaningful, but weird and crazy in a positive way. This is engaging for me as it was rare to see unique music videos. It was nice as it was detailed and polished. Based on this reaction video, I feel like I'm interested in watching multiple times the original video.
I'm not biased, but how this music video did not get award? I also watched Taylor Swift's VMA of 2023, It was full of drama and cavities.

Personally I absolutely love void. She did SO INCREDIBLY well with the music video and the meaning. Which i untimely why i love her. But all her all other songs have meaning. But Melanie did comfirm “VOID” is about anxiety.
Melanie Martinez is one of my favorite artists. One thing I think you might have missed is that the giant worm looks a little (a lot) phallic. I believe it’s symbolic of the male gaze or appealing to men. She kills the worm and flowers sprout out which I think means that once she stopped trying to be attractive for men she blossomed.
Funfact for you!, the spinning effect is actually via a camera spin not visual effects edited. This was shown in an instagram video of the void music video production.! 🙃❤️
For 11:01 she was stationary the whole time while they rotated the camera then added the movements in to make it look like she was moving in post. Think they did it that a lot for that scene especially when you look at 8:42 looked like she was sliding on the floor 😂

I would recommend starting from the beginning. Melanie tells a long story and it tends to be confusing if you start near the ending of the story. Void is also about the anxiety of being judged by people around you for your looks + changing how you look due to judgment.
You should react to their new mv 'Tunnel Vision' since you made a comment about the video game style !! Also enjoyed seeing an out of context reaction to a song that is so deep, meaningful and sad but hopeful to me :)
