In this Video Editor Reacts, I react to Porter Robinson - Cheerleader. I have always loved Porter Robinson, so I was extremely excited to react to one of his music videos! This video was a masterpiece!

This guy isn't a video editor, this dude is Game Theory for music. He just uncovered the whole lore in this song.
Sky motif is very reminiscent of a lot of his videos
He uncovered a lot for sure, and yet there is a lot of symbolism yet to be decyphered! For example, someone pointed out in the comments of the original video that the candy the cheerleader eats symbolises Porter's songs, and Porter eating the cheerleader symbolises his need for her support (or something like that). I'm sure there's more that hasn't been pointed out yet too.
It's nice to see so much effort and symbolism put in these videos, while the songs are already amazing on their own, it adds something extra to it all. One of my most favourite artists out there for sure.
And Porter Robinson was Mike Wazowski, but hey THAT'S JUST A THEORY! -

I respect how you know Porter well enough to not be like "this is a huge change in style" you literally say it's very much his style which I totally agree with. It's a different sound, sure but it's totally in line with his style.
Also your take on it being about fans is exactly what a lot of fans have been saying as well
I love that Porter’s first two videos have been “It’s not me, it’s you,” followed by “It’s not you, it’s me.” Except with WAY more depth than that. 🙂

The piñata metaphor with the cartoon Porter shaped candy you see at the beginning and the end is wild lol. His fans consume his music, merch, fan-art etc, he consumes their minds, their praise, obsession etc. The cycle is never ending. This may be my new favorite music video maybe of all time. And the song itself is insanely catchy. It’s nuts.

I love that you broke this down on such a technical level! Things that were made on CZcams or just the online space in general, a place where you can freely pause and zoom in and go frame by frame, stuff like this NEEDS to be appreciated as much as it can.

you touched on it a bit but I really think rewatching through the lens of how the internet has become an insane part of being a musician or visual artist and the conflict that poses to creativity is what this is about, like you love the connection but hate the attention in a certain way, the part where he says do I wish her the best or actually miss her (in regards to old internet) vs the part where she's saying if you're not mine I'd rather watch you burn alive hit hard for me as a fellow musician

Absolutely love this song! I’ve been so impressed by how creative and cool this music video is too but I’ve mostly found people discussing the music. It was really great to watch you break it down and appreciate it! Love that you love Porter too.
It was neat how many times it looked like we changed dimensions but then found out it was all set within a set within a set. I think the part I’ve been most gravitating toward lately as I continue to replay the song and rewatch the video was the first appearance of the cheerleader in the hot air balloon head with the heart eye binoculars. The motion there is so fluid and satisfying to watch!
I was amazed with that hand through the screen effect when I first saw the video I’m glad other people also thought it was cool

I only noticed one inconsistency in the editing which is the cabinet drop at 10:30 and it showing standing at 10:34/10:37, but down at 10:42. Definitely a nitpick, but this song/video is a modern masterpiece.
