The schools shut down my sons first year of Kindergarten. So we thought for 1st grade we would do the virtual learning through the school and it was a nightmare. So as afraid and nervous as I was we jumped into homeschooling the last half of first grade and it was awesome. We loved it so much we are homeschooling again this year! We may never go back to public school. Iâm thankful for being thrown into this journey as itâs become something I love! The freedom and peace we have this year has been so worth the hard days. I really enjoyed this video. Thanks!!
I'm so happy for you!! Just remember, YOU don't have to already know everything. You are learning alongside with him. You are showing him how much fun it is to learn. Instilling the love of learning, knowing how to think things through, thinking outside the box, critical thinking skills, is so rewarding and will be a great asset for the rest of his life. I hope that made sense.
@@marygayquigley9672 thank you!!! Yes it makes sense! We are homeschooling again next year!!! I appreciate your comment!
I was literally thinking when she said âwe just couldnât get to all the extrasâ.. I hope she realizes all the transitions they just experienced were MORE than enough extras! Farming, planting, building/construction, animal care- so many sciences and ecology, etc!!
I totally agree! So much education goes into their day to day lives!
"Let your homeschool reflect what's happening in your life." Wisdom! I am loving our current homeschool season -- it's one that allows for a few more of the 'extras' right now, but I know that other times will come when scaling back down to the essentials will be the wisest choice.
Omg YESSSSSS.... the best part of this was your wisdom behind parents caring about what our children are exposed to. I love your channel and it is reassuring to feel like there are other moms out there willing to take all the difficult steps for creating a future where it will be our kids leading.
As I always say, nothing made me become more pro-homeschool than being a public school teacher! đ
Totally hearing you!!
In your opinion is it ok to begin homeschool in the middle of the school year? Public school is failing my 4th grader. I have to do something
@@Beastiscntrlr I have seen it done before and yes, I think you could do it mid-school year! I do think it depends on the reason heâs struggling. Is it due to the poor public education system (ex. Class size, low quality teacher, curriculum choices)? If so then I think pulling him out mid-year is a great idea since heâs not gaining anything from a public school environment. If itâs due to any learning disabilities, then Iâd probably seek out a 405 plan, IEP, or see if thereâs accommodations he can get within the public school environment until he finishes the school year (to see if thatâs all he needs). Iâm sorry your little one is struggling. Itâs hard to do well in public education and a lot of children do get left behind.
@@moodsofkiwi9285 thank you! His grades plummeted after one semester of virtual last year! He ended spring barely passing 3rd. He is ending this semester with a 70 in English and 73 in math. Iâve reached out multiple times to his teachers about sending home practice work or giving me their objectives so I can help. He doesnât even have a book to bring home. He NEVER has English homework and once a week he has math homework. He just canât get the help he needs. Not to mention a classmate tried to fight him in the restroom đ© itâs all become too much for me. I absolutely donât think he has a learning disability though. He just needs some one on one help.
@@Beastiscntrlr I would pull him out in that case! The public ed system is unfortunately low quality, especially since covid.
Ohhhh I loved your soapbox on TV Iâd LOVE more of an Angie talk on this!!!! Like shows & movies yâall enjoy for kids
Everything said about the cartoons nowadays is on point. Thankful that there are more parents that think alike. Thanks for this video, it was very helpful!
Here I am again, praying about homeschooling. I am very concerned about sending my 8 year old daughter who is deaf back to public school. School starts in less than two weeks and it was just announced that masks will be mandatory for all staff and students. I believe with my whole heart that this is child abuse for her. She relies so much on lip reading and facial cues. Prayers would be appreciated.
You can do it! Youâve been teaching her since she was born. â€ïž
@@nctb23 itâs a matter of my husband not allowing it.
Praying for you!
Awe will be praying!! God loves your little girl! His will be done. đ
I think you should consider homeschooling her until they stop pushing for masks to be worn in the classroom. Maybe try talking with him again. Iâll be praying for you and your daughter.
I taught first and second grade for 11 years until I got Lyme Disease and got very ill. Iâm at the end of the 11 years and the pandemic hit. I was horrified for my children to do this virtual school thing. So I dove in feet first and homeschooled two out of three of my children. I had one 8th grader and one 4th grader. It was the hardest year in my teaching career but the best. We used Gather Round last fall and it was great!!! My boys learned so much!! My youngest wanted to continue with me for a second year so we are back at it this year and I couldnât be happier. Iâm so happy that homeschooling came into my life and that I have a chance to teach my kids. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with curriculum. It really does help a lot. â„ïž
You are the best at homeschooling in my opinion. You could teach a course on it. Your children are blessed with their parents.
I have 2 boys, my oldest being 3 years old and I am just starting to dabble in researching homeschooling. I never thought I would, never wanted to, it had really never crossed my mind as an option. But with all of the changes Iâve seen in the last few years with whats being accepted, whatâs being taught, and whatâs being pushed onto our children - I feel this yearning to protect my children. And homeschooling is a huge way I can do that. Itâs so overwhelming to me, I was never homeschooled so I donât have anything to go off of, it just feels so daunting! I feel like Iâm not smart enough to be their teacher, that Iâll be giving them a subpar education and thatâs my biggest fear. Iâve been watching so many of your homeschooling videos (& others as well) to get my mind wrapped around the possibility. Thank you for sharing. đ€
Youâre definitely smart enough and in the things where you feel less than there are curriculum & teacher manuals to help you through. You were created and gifted to be able to teach your own kids. Youâve got this, Mama!
@@latanyacarr411 Thank you, very sweet of you! âșïž
Same boat!!!
Would love to hear more about the Nature Notebooking!!
We love All About Reading! I would love to hear more about your homeschool and your soap boxes! Love this content! Thank you!
Love the peek at the room update! Wall colour is perfect!!! đđ
LOVE LOVE LOVE this video!
We have been doing LOTS of life schooling - we started homeschooling in May here in NZ and OMG noticing such a difference in our 15 year old son in so many different ways.
I just realized where in the house you are lol. I'm excited about the reveal
I just died when you where talking about the Abraham Lincoln book "Oh my gosh! It was so fun" đđđđ
Yes! Youâre absolutely right-âgarbage in, garbage out.â This was a great review as well. Thank you! đ
I love seeing your face pop up on my CZcams feed. â„ïž
I plan on homeschooling my children.
Although my husband and I have none yet, it is something we definitely will be doing.
Thank you for this video, Angela! Youâre not alone in thinking there are too many inappropriate shows on television!
All About Reading is approved by The Science of Reading and Ortho Gillingham Method . With that being saidâŠ. Best curriculum for reading. â„ïž
Using it for the first time with my son who was not learning to read after trying a couple other curriculums. So far so good. Only on day 4 though. đ
@@homeschoollifemom thereâs a BUNCH of science behind this curriculum. Itâs even recommended for Dyslexia. Thereâs a study now pushing public schools around USA to use this curriculum to teach reading.
@@blairbardot53 yes. I had heard ppl talk about it but I hadnât realized it was for struggling readers/dyslexic children until my friend recommended to me for my struggling reader since it worked well for her dyslexic daughter. Iâm not sure my son is dyslexic but ânormalâ learning to read programs are not working
For him.
@@homeschoollifemom itâs actually for ALL readers. The Science of Reading describes it as the legit way of teaching successful reading comprehension for everyone. The thing is that it can also be used on struggling readers but itâs for everyone. My son was an amazing reader before we got the curriculum, I decided to purchase it because of the science behind. It ended up boosting those abilities. Sometimes kids can read amazing BUT lack of comprehension, this curriculum does both , my son was lacking of the comprehension part and now , we just finished level Blast Off to Reading , and woooow ! The level seemed easy when I glanced it but once in depth , SO SO GOOD .
@@blairbardot53 oh ok. Good to know. I thought it was geared towards struggling readers. Iâll prob use it for the rest of my kids if it works well for him.
I truly don't understand the hype with gather round. Yes its beautiful, yes its a great concept. But it did not deliver at all. It was very boring and I felt like I was reading google internet searches. I wasn't a fan of all the reading. Hard to keep kids attention with that much reading IMO
I was so intrigued by the idea but after watching a flip through and a few do a lesson with us videos, I didn't get the hype.
I like Gather Round. Itâs always about adapting the curriculum to your children. You canât read the TG in full to a 6yo or 8yo, but a high schooler needs all of that content. I like that it gives us all the same topic and the depth can be adjusted by age!
Also love the way you really emphasize reading! It was not emphasized for me in school and I think it makes all the difference just like you said đ hope to really incoorperate lots of reading into our homeschool.
I started reading aloud more regularly to my kids in the last few months and we love it. If you ever need any zeal to further that passion read the read aloud family by Sarah Mackenzie. Itâs awesome how beneficial reading aloud to your kids is.
Ah! I'm so excited to get started homeschooling in the next few years. I have a toddler and baby so it will be a little while yet before we begin, but you're such an inspiration†Your spirit in all of this makes me happy I'm choosing to homeschool âș Thanks for sharing!
27:17 ! This is so true and a lot of extra love to you Angela for including this as a TREAT at the end! Another perfect homeschooling video and Iâm here for it!
Really hope to see your nature lessons more in-depth as well as anything you have the time to bring! Thank you for being such an inspirational, hilariously wonderful mum! đđ
Listening to you talk about your year, your struggles... You just spoke aloud so many things I've been thinking and feeling about our homeschooling journey so far.
Iâm giggling hard that youâve been trying so dang hard not to show us the playroom in the vlogs, but you filmed and posted this video in there. Now that Iâve seen a sneak peak, Iâm needing more!!
This is the old room sheâs talking about the little outside office added
Been here since day 1 of homeschooling for us and still love your videos and I have missed your homeschooling stuff :) you are the one who introduced me to My fathers world , life of Fred and TGTB. Which we still us in our homeschool :)
Omg Thanks for this video! I subscribed to your channel last year because of the homeschool videos ! I clicked right away for this one. I was thinking about Mel Science last week but didnât find anyone who reviewed them, thanks to your video Iâll be purchasing it now !
Yes, I would love a video on your favorite educational apps. Our kids have very little screen time but we did just purchase a couple of little tablets to use for school purposes and I'm searching for the best apps for that. Your input would be awesome! A nature notebooking video would be great too!
Iâm glad that your experience with the school of life changed your view point. I feel the same and I definitely still fight the âschoolingâ part of me, but Iâve seen so much growth.
We used So happy to learn & loved it!
My son can read his âownâ books made just for him and he loveeess doing it!
We are now working on letter sounds & phonics blending which is harder for him, but his books give him such confidence.
I also recommend teaching children with Down syndrome to read and thereâs one for math too.
It really breaks it down to different activities for each day.
I'm not really much of a social media person, and have mainly used it in the past for our family and friends to keep up with us! :) But our homeschool has been going through a bit of a transition year (after doing a more traditional homeschool model for probably 8 out of the last 11 years of our homeschool journey). I found you on CZcams while looking for some curriculum reviews, and I've been binge watching all your homeschool videos for the last week or two. :) I've appreciated your insight and enjoyed your awesome family. I just wanted to say thank you for the encouragement and all the effort you put into your channel. :)
Love this video! Thank you so much for sharing reviews on some of the homeschool curriculum (and other things...like, Not Consumed) you have used. We have loved the Not Consumed resources for years...great stuff! We are in our 12th year of homeschooling, and I still enjoy learning from others. I found your channel about a year and a half ago and didnât realize that you were homeschooled...thatâs awesome! Looking forward to more content like this from you, apps that your family uses and likes, as well as the playroom reveal!!!đ€
đ thank you so much for speaking up about garbage kids tv shows. I'm the exact same way. We only have one TV in the entire house and my kids only have like 5 or 8 shows they can choose from. (that we've watched and approved)
Looking forward to trying teaching textbooks with my oldest this year. We love Logic of English for reading. It's a super phonics program!! My 4 yr old started reading this past year with it. Happy school year to all the Braniffs!
Oh and we loved âAll about readingâ too! But if you are in a season where you donât have as much time as a parent, we used Gather Rounds âready to readâ with our third and I was blown away at how quickly she was reading and with way less time invested. A very solid program as well.
I am not homeschooling quite yet, but when i start I will definitely rewatch a bunch of your videos! đđ so good and practical. Thank you!!
I completely agree about reading! My 4 siblings and I all read so much for school growing up a ton. We learned so so much from it! I have 4 and 2yr old girls and they already love reading and collecting books. My husband and I feed it as often as possible by reading to them and buying as many as possible.
Your ideas and life are so much how my parents did us in homeschoolingđ. We had a farm and my mom even taught us things like sewing, baking, cooking supper, home making, she had us go through a manners book together as well and we all did music and learned instruments We all had our things we did on the farm and we all LOVED it!! đ
Makes me so happy to know these ideals are still around!! Oh and I grew up with no TV and we learned just fine! We went places and did so many field trips during school and since my dad was a preacher we lived all different places! I dont feel like we missed out at all!! đ
The curriculum you are using to work with Rosie is likely intentionally created using plain graphics as not to overwhelm kids with special needs who struggle with sensory issues as well as concentration issues and find colorful and busy pages difficult.
I agree , myself and our kiddos are all neurodiverse and find colourful pretty pages highly distracting. Black and white and basic font works for us . But i do love the look of some of the pretty stuff đ€Ł
@@mummagirl I think that's natural and many of us learn to accept what we can't change or stuff down what we find difficult. We become really good at masking as well when accommodation like BW basic pages are harder to find because society deem pretty and more colorful things "better". I think in small doses as long as you are aware of what you can personally handle may explain why you can tolerate pretty or busy/colorful things for periods of time.
I do not home school but your passion for learning and teaching brings me joy. I have taken several of your ideas and incorporate with my 5 yr old. As a pastor thank you. Thank you for incorporating Bible into your teaching and giving space for your kids to explore their faith and as questions.
I have an adult son on the spectrum, and he is now 25, but for various reason I home schooled him on an off thru his non college years and I always say this trust your gut, you are your childs most accurate advocate what I mean by that is you know Rosie better then anyone, like I know my Sam, we did send him to highschool so he got socialization I only gave him 2 siblings so you got me beat there and for activities like theater which he loved still loves, my point is trust yourself and your family because you will always do the best thing, my son who they told me would be in a home, has a bachelor's degree and is at home with us and is so much more then what others expectations were. Love your channel, also ordered a Lottie shirt an sticker, loving the merch. God bless you family.
I love All About Reading! I used it for my son to teach him to read my first year of homeschooling. Thanks for sharing!
Me listening to your soap box: âPREACH!!â đđŒđđŒđđŒ
I loved your soapbox. I'm so grateful that you spoke about this topic. I feel like I largely stand alone in how I've banned this stuff from our home. I constantly feel like us parents see kids behave this way on the playground, at sports, etc that's pure regurgitation from the garbage on tv and movies they're watching. I find it mind-boggling that so many parents shrug it off, completely ignore it while they're on their phones or gossiping, or else make excuses for why they have to let their kids watch this stuff. I'm constantly torn, because the behavior then gets picked up by other kids, or the kids who aren't involved in it feel bullied or left out.
Ohhhh mama!!!!! That paint color is amazing! đđ
YES! Please do the educational app video! đ
If only all parents were so concerned about teaching morals, empathy and integrity. And about our God and love thy neighbor. Our world would be nearly opposite of what it is now. I do still believe that good outweighs badâŠ.
wow that paint colour is gorgeous
Enjoy watching you from the UK, your content is always inspirational and uplifting. I seem to remember a video where you said you suffered with insomnia....having struggled myself with this for a while now, Iâd be really grateful to hear how you manage it or supplements youâve found helpful as Iâm running out of ideas and would just love a good nights kip! đđ»đŽ
Also in the uk and surname is also Beer⊠hello there haha
Love this Angela! Youâre an inspiration to me. Would LOVE to hear about your nature notebooking!! Iâm hoping to start that this year in our homeschooling too
Please please please do a video on what is allowed on screens in your home especially educational shows. My kids are 8 and 5 and I get a lot of judgment from what I will and won't let them watch.
Agree 1000% about the cartoons today! They are banned from our house as well! And we also love Not Consumed for Bible studies! We did Brotherâs Keeper last year as well and LOVED it! Weâre doing Obedience this year. Thanks for another great video!
I am in love with the brown and green colors!
Perfect timing as I sit and ponder switching our math and reading curriculums. đ€Š
Hi um yes can you please do an entire series on children's television shows today? Grief, I feel you on this!! We have a one year old and only watch a couple of select shows from the 90's through CZcams lol
Please do the nature notebooking video. We are military family moving to Guam and I think that could be a fun way to explore the island and help my kids with settling in.
Thank you for this information. I am a mom of 5 and I am strongly considering to homeschool at least my seventh grader, second and preschooler . I am extremely nervous, more because my husband doesnât think that is a good idea, because of the extra work that this will be on my end . After watching several of your videos I think Iâm just going to give it a try without his approval. Pray for me. thank you
Totally solidified in our curriculum choices, bought and ready to go: but Iâm still here listening đ€Ł love that room behind you!
SAME đ€Ł
100% agree with you that tv is garbage. We are so careful with what our children consume that includes media.
English is not our first language. But my daughters started reading books in English when they were about 12 or 13 years old. And now one of them is at the university to become a English teacher. Their grades were not very good before starting to read and watch movies in English. Reading was so important to archive this level of education. đđ
I would really love it, if you could do a video about the apps you are using!
Yes me too!
Yes!!!!!
I was homeschooled and when you said Bob Jones I had actual war flashbacks
So good â€ïž we love Gather Round for our family so so much. I can see in high school though for my oldest, having him join for the group teachers guide portion and then when everyone else is notebooking, he can go through his other work. But we will see! He is grade 7 now so itâs great and it gives our homeschool such a beautiful feeling to come together as a family like this.
My son who has Down Syndrome is going to be 6. I also homeschool and Iâm always looking through special needs curriculum. Iâve never heard of this. Thank you
9th year homeschooling (took a 2 year public school break in the beginning). Have 1 graduate adult boy, 3 high school girls, 12 year old twin boys, 11 year old twin boys, 6&1/2 year old boy, 5 year old boy, 3&1/2 year old girl, 2 year old boy, and 6 week old baby girl. I enjoy group subjects till they get to high school and be independent. I schedule farm life work into a school subject. We use the nature and farm notebooking curriculum with the Julia Rothman books to add on to our farm studies!
I was about to get super defensive and click out before you explained your view on what TV propagates..... it humbled me lol, you are 100% right in the caricatures and stereotyping that happens (it becomes a pop culture constructed cycle)
Love this television soap box!!! You're so right.
Oh my gosh...thank you for saying that about cartoons!! We watch plenty of TV and I am not super 'precious' about a bit of crude potty humor but the whole 'kids are just expected to act awful' and 'teenagers are horrible' stuff is awful!
I LOVE the paint color in this room. Can you share?
Thank you! Relatively new subscriber although Iâve been homeschooling for five years. Iâm really enjoying your videos and the things you have to say. Find myself agreeing with a lot - even the curricula! My condolences on the loss of your motherâs beloved horse. đ
âUh uh đđŒ â I love it! Thanks for calling it out!!
I would love to know what you do allow them to watch! I hate everything on tv too but sometimes they deserve it but itâs choosing what to watch
Thanks for sharing this video! I love the idea of the nature notebooking please share more, those books behind your head I had to stalk down in your jungle room reveal and got them all!! happy day Angie
Love that you touched on the effect modern cartoons have on our children! AGREE! Thank you for being honest and open, it's one of the top reasons I love your content. One question: what is a morning basket?đ€
Typically a handful of items you do every morning. Example our morning basket is reading a chapter of the Bible, going through the childrenâs book of virtues, and our current read aloud (Little Town on the Prairie). Some ppl have way more extravagant ones. Ours is very simple.
We do scriptures, prayer, hymn, recition of poetry and scripture, Tuttle Twins, our church's "Come, Follow Me" stuff, and a read aloud.
Morning basket is a way to group family subjects like Bible, read alouds, memorization etc. Pam Barnhill has a great podcast called Your Morning Basket that gives a lot of ideas about combining ages groups and prioritizing the "Truth, goodness, and beauty" subjects. What this looks like for my 2 and 4 year old: calendar, hymn, bible story, scripture recitation, one nursery rhyme, one poem, poetry recitation, read aloud ( sounds like a lot but nothing lasts more than 5 minutes and we can do most of it while my 4 year is jumping up and down on the couch-- always moving but he absorbs everything. 2 isn't required to participate but she listens and repeats words here and there-- she loves to climb on my lap and point to things in our books)
I enjoy your soap box moments âșïžâŠ so there with you !
thank you for making this video! so helpful!
This playroom behind you looks gorgeous! Super excited to the video you have coming up soon about it!
That was exactly how I felt about Gather Round. Just not working for our family right now even though I love so much of it.
I love your channel, came across one of your video yesterday and so glad i'm subscribed. I recently started homeschooling this summer and learning as much as I can. Thank you for your content...excellent!
So happy to learn Is a great curriculum. My Mom has been using it with my younger brother who has Down syndrome is 21 since last year. And he is making progress.
I am really curious how AP and IB exams work for homeschool, I am not a homeschooling mom yet, but I am just so curious. I know Kennedy is going into high school, so I was wondering if you have put much thought or consideration in for these exams, as I started taking them as a freshman. I ask because for me theses classes were some of my favorite in high school, and enabled me to be so much farther ahead in college which was an amazing blessing, as I was able to graduate early and with almost no debt (which has been so amazing).
You can just have your student go somewhere that tests for those and have them take the tests. It takes a bit of looking, but homeschoolers can and do take AP tests.
AP tests have a specific way that they do things--I imagine it would be difficult to teach and practice that at home. If you're hoping for college credit, it might be easier and yield more credits to do dual enrollment in an online college or community college.
I love that you've been sneaking a little reveal of the playroom đ I banned those kid shows from my house too. Why in the world is there all this garbage on TV for kids that seriously enforces all the behaviors we are trying to keep away? It has never made any sense to me. Incorporating Julia Rothman's farm anatomy book in our homeschool this year as well. I got a printable companion notebook to go with it & I'm so excited to use them together.
You are so amazing. What stores do you usually do your grocery shopping at? Do you stock up on water? Can you possibly do some in store grocery shopping videos? It would be awesome if you could show how you do your full shopping trip
What you said about kids programming. It is in the books too!!!
My daughterâs reading level is high but she doesnât like to read!! Just kills me!! Sheâll read a graphic novel but not a real book! Iâm glad you found a good curriculum for Rosie!! Canât wait to see more videos!
I just want to say that we have the same Merida bow on our living room floor. đđ„°
Amen, sister! About the garbage pushed on kids on the TV...but also abou All About Reading- it just has worked so well for all of my kids! And picked up some materials for this year from Not Consumed Ministries after watching one of your videos- I think during the homeschool week you did in July- so thank you!!
This was so helpful as a first time homeschool mom! Thank you!
I completely agree about Gather Round. I've tried it, and I just don't see how it is appropriate for the college bound tween/teen. I DO see how it would be great for teaching a group of elementary students. Re: TV, my kids don't watch it for all the reasons you mention and more. They do watch the news with me, and it is a big part of our homeschool/discussion civics routine. One time my 9 y o daughter needed a medical procedure and the nurse tried to turn the clinic room tv on for distraction purposes. When asked which channel she'd like, my daughter told the nurse a certain news channel that I'll leave un-named. The nurse said that was a first! I said, "she's homeschooled". lol. Yea, we educate all day!
glad the book studies were fun. cant wait til we get there. yes no disney junior over here!
I am really looking forward to your nature note booking video! :) ~Karen
We are one year 2 homeschooling. I'm working on cutting the TV and junk for my kids because I've seen the negative impact as well. I have 6 kids, but only two are really doing school work (3 preschool aged & 1 is a toddler) and we are trying easy peasy, real science odyssey, and curisotiy chronicles this year. I felt like last year I bought a bunch and we ended up not loving a lot of it & stopping so I'm trying to not spend so much this year while we continue to find what works for us. It's so hard to decide what to use! There's so much out there! I did buy the Not consumed book studies because because seemed great but I havent incorporated it yet. We are only 1 week in this year but so far it hasn't been too bad!
Was wondering if youâd report back on Gather Round. We did the curriculum last year, 4 units in total. I used it with littles all the way up to high school. It is hard to âgatherâ multiple ages (especially when thereâs a big gap) but we loved the curriculum. And now weâre all in. It was game changing for my high schoolers last year. They learned so much and we had such meaningful conversation, etc.
