  • This is the most likely reason why your triplets sound bad. But rather than dwell on the problem, we spend the video finding solutions and exploring creative ideas. I demonstrate an extremely simple, practical exercise that has helped my triplets become more solid, and I think you’ll get results from it as well. Practice the exercise on your pad (download the PDF below), AND practice the creative ideas near the end of the video. If you can implement the tricks for making your triplet fills sound even bigger and more epic, you’ll be sounding like a true pro at those climactic groove moments.

I am mostly a jazz drummer. People might find it easier to count out the triplets: one-trip-let, two-trip-let, three-trip-let, four-trip-let when alternating between the straight eight and triplet feel. Or try triplets with an anchored RH lead, as RLL or RRL.

A song that came to mind when you mentioned the slingshot thing was Can't Sleep by Black Peaks. There's a couple of cool triplet fills in there that build up nicely to explosive parts of the song. Honestly, it's just a cool drum track in general, would definitely recommend listening.

How about best way's to play them, not on a snare, or tom, but the combo of snare, tom, kick...triplets and I LOVE them!!

Cajon as speaker stand. Got it. I think not having THAT is probably why my triplet fills are lame. :-) Nice lesson, Stephen; thank you.

Love the info but honestly a little disappointed you didn't include fill patterns that use the kick. Those are the ones that I and a lot of drummers have the most difficulty with.

Yeah buddy! Cycling through eighth note triplets with singles, then doubles, then paradiddles. Then sixteenths with all three. Back and forth.

Hi Stephen, just allow me to introduce myself, my name's Nick, I live in London, but was born in Berlin and have been playing drums for over 40 years now (!). Just wanted to say that I really enjoy your videos and want to thank you for your efforts.
On the subject of triplet fills, there's one on a track called Stratus, by Billy Cobham, from the album Spectrum. The fill comes at 6'52", but that's an accurate time and will vary depending on a number of factors: each of the tracks on the album, except the first, include an introductory drum solo. I always edit my files, adding mp3 tags (eg album covers, lines ups etc) and removing silence from the beginnings and ends of the tracks (CDs always put a 3" gap between tracks). For this album I've also separated the solos from the tracks they introduce, so I can play them individually, or, if I'm playing them to someone, omit them. So, the track is 9'38" long including the solo. The solo is 2'56", so if you find yourself listening to a version without it, the fill comes at 3'56". There are numerous live versions on CZcams, so make sure you've got the album version. I just did a quick search and found one that's 6'53" and one that's 9'50". The former will be a version without the solo and the latter with, although both have over 10" of gaps: accurate timings are 6'42" without solo and 9'38" with, so the fill will come at around 4' and 7' respectively in those files. It actually comes at 3'56" and 6'52" respectively, if timings were accurate. I'm sure you'll notice the fill I mean when you hear it. It sounds deceptively simple, but he kind of staggers it, hesitating slightly between the two triplets. Personally, I love that kind of subtle playing. It's actually staggeringly difficult to pull off accurately and consistently (at least I find it so) yet to the casual listener it won't sound like anything particularly exceptional, although it's very effective, its overall effect one of pulling back, although the fill itself pushes and pulls. You might notice that I'm struggling a bit to describe it well. I can only encourage you to check it out. It's a killer track. Incidentally, when Rory Gallagher left Deep Purple, Tommy Bolin got the gig on the strength of his solo on this track. I first heard the album at a guitarist friend's house and it knocked me out. It was Billy Cobham's first solo album and I still think it's one of his best.
Thanks again for your interesting and informative videos, hope you enjoy the recommendation.
