Man, thanks for this video. It really helped me with speed. I started using my middle finger instead of my index and has made a world of difference. Thanks..
Totally brilliant instruction Rob! You are now my go to guru 👍✊️😁
Lol I started doing the middle finger too after watching this video. I was a big pinky out index especially with buzz rolls dude and slowly fixing it and it’s different but is better technique
It seems counter-intuitive to me to not use your strongest (index) finger in your grip. Why did you stop using it as your fulcrum and how have you found making the adjustment? :)
@@RealBesty I used to think that too, but then I noticed cats like Colaiuta, Deitch, DiCense, etc having relatively looser grips with the forefinger, especially during double-strokes.
Yes I noticed the middle finger is faster too. Brilliant video Rob! Gonna watch your others now...
Finally, a doctor who's prescription I can actually read
😂 i see what you did there
Rob: "Are you having trouble with your doubles?"
Me: "I don't think so, but I feel like I'm about to find out I am."
Thanks, man. Great video. Love your stuff.
Hahaha 🙂👊🏽
Precisely!!
Josh Knighton lol
Welcome to Double Trouble Club!
LOL
When I play doubles with my right, it's smooth as silk, left hand, it's like I've never seen a drum stick before.
I know that feeling. My left hand is spasticated. Can't imagine how much better I'd be if my left hand was equal to my right.
@@abc456f I've played a drum kit for 30 years, in cover bands and church but I've not really played anything where I've needed to learn or play rudiments. I gig most weekends year round but since all my gigs got cancelled from mid-March due to Coronavirus I have deliberately not practiced or played on my kit. In the last 10 years that I've been gigging solidly I've only ever practiced to learn new songs but I've decided to use the virus quarantine to only practice rudiments and only on a pad. My right hand is pretty good but my left hand is horrible. Way too much tension and elbow movement and way slower than the right. If I had two right hands I could probably play doubles at 200bpm but the fastest I can play doubles and keep my lefts and rights even is about 130. I'm only practicing variations of doubles and paradiddles because lets face it, I've gotten by for 30 years without even knowing what most of the rudiments are even called.
Lol its flipped for me. My left feels seamless, my right is a like a drunk trying to walk the straight line test - all over the place! I'm working on it though.
I saved four or five of robs more basic lessons to my CZcams library and I go back to those daily and my left hand has shown definite improvement. In fact I do a lot of these lessons only with my left hand because my right is in pretty good shape.

Same, Rob is the best
This is the first time I've ever seen anyone actually show a close up of the hand and finger movements. Thanks so much man!
You are a great teacher! Your advise makes sense. It is hard to find a teacher who knows so well the early mistakes that beginners encounter and who advises how to get over these impediments. I'm greatly appreciative!
Me: *plays drums for 30 years
Also me: "What's a double?"
Don't be like me.
I was just about to ask the same thing lol
@@Daveyboy10053 you guys are not real drummers then lmao
kaneki k its possible they just forgot ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@jackleaves4948 Or they know the technique but don't know what it's called.
@@AK47_414 lol you can still be a good drummer just cause u don't know all the techniques doesn't mean ur not a real drummer?
Awesome! Been waiting for this!
Very nice, thanks for the clear video. And what a gorgeous kit you have!
Thank you for taking the time to teach
Excellent! Love you entire approach to realistic usable lessons. Bravo!! Mad cool.

I am a begginner almost reaching intermidiate level and it's thanks to you. So helpful. I take notes in my notebook of every detail. I feel like in an institute with you.
I watched you on Drumeo and the only thing I regret it"s that I did not know of your channel before.
Thank you and I do appreciate this
Awesome prescription Dr. Rob. Thank you.
Absolutely spot on! Nice one Rob
very great video, straight to the point, thanks!!
I dig it. First came across this way of emphasizing the 2nd stroke of this sticking back in the 1970s when some other drummers and I were analyzing the double strokes played by Mitch Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix's drummer, so I appreciate your explanation of how to practice this stroke. Thanks Doc!
YES. Fucking Mitch Mitchell - that's who I could never imitate, and this was why.
Rob, pound for pound, I think this is one of the best lessons the internet has to offer. I’ve always thought my doubles were really good, and I was just watching because, we’ll, it’s you, but I realized I was doing exactly what you said players do. Guilty as charged! Keep up the awesome work!
Your a wonderful teacher, thank you for sharing the information that you have had to dig out over the years with hit and misses and now your being generous to us so we don’t have to work as hard as you did as much .I use to work for greyhound corporation and their was this mechanic there an old timer who had lots of information but he wasn’t willing to share with anyone... I think that’s why I appreciate your kindness so much...
Thank you Dr. Rob! This video helped me so much!!
Ive been playing since I was 14 years old. I still don't have a well developed double stroke. If your video helps me im coming to visit and buying you dinner!!!!

Yet another advice that helps, this time it took less than a day to feel a difference in my playing.
Thank you, thank you so much, my man.
THANK you very much. That was extremely helpful. I didn't realize how raggedy my double strokes were until how this video. Because of you, my double strokes are much improved. And getting better. Again, thank you and keep type of excerise coming.

Break through moment! for me! Thank you so much for explaining this. All my life trying to get a rebound second bounce instead of emphasis on the second hit! I can't thank you enough for explaining this so I completely understood how to get out of this rut I've been stuck in for years! Bless you !!!
Bro I love this video. Thanks for the lesson!
