ICJ ruling on Rafah: What does it mean for the Gaza 'genocide' case | DW News

  • The International Court of Justice in The Hague has ordered Israel to stop its military offensive in the city of Rafah in southern Gaza. The UN's top court described the humanitarian situation there as disastrous and ordered Israel to allow unhindered access of aid. But Israeli politicians have rejected the ruling, saying that operations against Hamas - a group considered a terrorist organization by multiple countries - will continue. Though ICJ orders are legally binding, the court has no police or military force to enforce them.

The world cannot live with the new norm that a large terrorist group (accompanied by hundreds of civilians) can venture into a neighboring country, rape, torture and murder thousands of people and then withdraw with hundreds of hostages and claim UN protection so no one can attack them afterwards. This simply cannot stand. No country would accept this. The hypocrisy and anti-Israel bias seen globally is rampant and despicable.

For weeks Hamas declined every offer presented to them, and then suddenly they agreed to a new "deal" pushed by Egypt just as a PR stunt before the Rafah operation started. For sure that PR stunt worked on you and many others. Hamas probably has no more live hostages left (or hostages in good enough health to be publicly shown ever again), so they stopped negotiating because of that. On Friday, the International Court of Justice, an arm of the United Nations, ordered Israel to suspend its military campaign in Rafah in southern Gaza, adding to a growing list of diplomatic and legal moves against Israel that have undermined its international standing.
The ruling came just days after prosecutors at the International Criminal Court, another international tribunal, called for the arrest of Israel’s prime minister and defense minister, a move that was supported by some longstanding partners of Israel, including France.
The order came the same week that three European countries took the coordinated step of recognizing Palestine as a state. It also followed widespread university campus protests in the United States against Israel’s campaign in Gaza, as well as decisions by Turkey to suspend trade with Israel and by Belize, Bolivia and Colombia to break diplomatic ties with Israel.

I'm still waiting for the part where someone differentiates between modern urban warfare and "genocide." The civilian-to-combatant casualty ratios are not even remotely abnormal for modern urban and proxy wars we've seen within the last few decades. Just because Hamas attacks and hides behind their wives while Israel has accepted a coward's challenge, that doesn't mean the intent is to wipe out the entire population or even annex the territory. Not to mention if a country like Israel was FOCUSING on civilians (not just collateral damage), the civilian deaths could be counted in millions, not 10,000s.
