@@SignDuoChannel OMGG, I LOVE YOU GUYS SO MUCHH❤️💫
I am a native spanish speaker. My second language is english and my third is japanese. I swear one time I was having a conversation in spanish and I said "ellos provide madera"-They provide wood. I forgot how to say provide in spanish and my friends still mock me until this day 😂
Feel you Ellen. I tend to code switch for expressions and certain situations. It's just that some languages have unique forms of expression, don't they?
i literally do that everyyytime and my friends mock me mostly because they think i do it because i wanna show off??? that i speak english?? it may sound stupid to people who are not bilingual the way you can actually forget words in different languages very easily and constantly! hahaha but i always swear to them i legit forgot the word! it happens often
plus spanish me is not the same as english me 😂😂😂😂😂😂 i feel they have different personalities for me, or expressions at least, like you pointed out! idk it’s different, i appreciate my fellow bilingual friends cause we just get it and it’s normal for us to speak or chat in both languages
@@wonderlaund yess I actually read somewhere that our personalities switch with the language! !!
This is me! I also have the same order of languages learned! Making ASL my fourth now.
For those that bring up the “I wish Sign Language was taught in school” - which I agree with - should read the book Language of Light by Gerald Shea. It’s about the history of Sign Language and how Oralists came to oppress it and come to understand why some of the reasons it’s not taught in in schools, except for the basics (hand spelling) and a few easily taught signs.
I do agree with this, however some people don't learn well with just reading the book(s), so I recommend people (who happen to read this reply) to look up some ASL videos here, on CZcams. Some of them are really great!
I just ordered it. Thanks for the recommendation.
i love how Ryan is learning how Ellen feels about such deeper topics and it’s so lovely seeing that level of understanding! happy holidays 😉❤️
Yeah! So true. I learn from her everyday lol
I really loved Ellen’s perspective on this question and I enjoyed that she took the time to explain exactly what she meant. Holiday!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’ve studied sign language at my college for the past 3 years and I’ve found anytime I’m in a situation where it’s hard for me to hear myself or others I start signing! I know they won’t know what I’m signing but it helps me to verbalize my thoughts and I think it’s really cool the way my brain switches when it’s hard for me to hear my brain tells me “oh you can’t hear well, let’s see what you’re trying to say instead”
My mom went deaf when I was 8. She woke up one morning and couldn't hear. Thought we were playing bad prank on her. She went into such a depressive state that she never wanted to learn asl. I was in 4th grade and tried to find a ride to school early so I could learn to sign in hopes to teach her. Unfortunately asl was not as easy of an elective language as it is now becoming. She only communicated by lip reading or drawing into her hand. She passed away 4 months ago and these holiday s are the first that she is not here. She was so sad all the time around this season but I always tried to make sure to talk with her to make her feel included. I love that you use your platform to raise awareness to this community ❤
I usually watch this on mute so I can feel how he feels
That’s a good idea
I really enjoyed hearing Ellen’s perspective, especially since she studied linguistics! You guys are the best!! Happy holidays!!
Thank you! You too!
Here’s a question - While speaking English people sometimes use filler words, such as “like” or “um”, is there such thing in sign language or is it more fluid ?
I feel like in sign language you would just pause, but I don't actually know. Like we do when we can't think of a word, we usually just pause until we think of it, or we just find a replacement, but maybe there's a designated sign for that.
I'm taking asl courses and I've noticed that when my professor (who is Deaf) has a ummmm moment she'll hold her hands loosely like this 🤲 with her palms facing her and like wiggle all her fingers while she thinks! I'm hearing, but from what I've seen this is one sign equivalent of "um" or "uh"
@@kateb1781 that's cool! So how does she hold her hands? And is her palm orientation in or out?
@@isthisnametaken6618 Her palms are oriented in, with her fingers loosely spread, palms about level with her chest. Sometimes she'll move her hands in circles while she does it like a "go on" motion
@@kateb1781 ah cool! Maybe you should ask her if she made up that sign, or if it's an actual ASL sign?
I loved the “code switching” explanation, so helpful! Happy Holidays you two adorable love birds
Same to you!
I had never heard of code switching. I really appreciated hearing your perspective and insight about signing and verbal languages. Wishing you guys a happy holiday!
Hey guys, last week I was diagnosed with Bell's palsy, which has paralyzed the left side of my face. It has a very high chance of healing in a few months, but I had no signs of it and it was terrifying waking up not being able to move half my face.
But watching you two always makes me happy and fills me with hope. The half of my face that works is overcompensating so it really hurts to talk so my boyfriend and I watch you guys and I use some signs with him since it's painful to speak.
This was all a really long way of saying thank you for being you, documenting it and sharing it with us. It's been a really rough week and you two make my day better. Have a great holiday season, can't wait for more videos!❤
I had that as well! Not as severe as yours seems to be though. After a week of facial exercises my face came back to normal so I hope it will go away soon for you too 😊
This was super interesting how you answered this question and emphasized the wording of "habit" and how that plays into the history of ASL, that was super cool
Thanks Dana! Glad you liked it
Ellen’s makeup looks amazinggg!!! I love your guys channel. Have a happy holiday both of you! :)
Wishing you both a wonderful blessed holiday season! Thank you for being such wonderful role models for both the Deaf and hearing communities!
I love how passionate Ellen’s answer was! I’m sure the person who asked didn’t mean anything negative by using the work “habit” but Ellen’s thorough answer was amazing!
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday!
Happy Holidays!
This question is more for Ryan:
If someone isn't one hundred percent fluent in ASL, but uses the signs he/she knows and fingerspelling to communicate with you, do you appreciate the attempt to communicate?
Hey Maura I appreciate your question! I appreciate any effort to communicate albeit appropriate. If I am in a line at the grocery store, I don't really like when people jump in and say "i know sign i can help" but if that same person saw that I am deaf and waited until after then to greet me and talk to me I love to see that
i love listening to ellen speak in such a passionate and informed way about language !! it’s always exciting to learn more and watching y’all create an understanding together in the moment. have a happy holiday sign duo !! hope y’all are staying safe and healthy
❤️HOLIDAY!!❤️ When I decided to start learning sign language to communicate with a deaf coworker, I found you guys and I’ve learned so much from your videos. We’re so lucky to be able to witness your beautiful relationship, you’ve made us all smile, have hope, and become more educated. Thank you for all you do😊
I have a question: Ryan, do you find that Ellen's ASL is different when she is simultaneously speaking and signing? Does her ASL reflect English sentence structure more when she speaks?
I love your videos! I am learning ASL and your content is informative
This is a great question! I'd be really curious to know too. I find that when I sign while speaking, I tend to use English structure more which isn't always completely correct in ASL.
My guess she douse what Wandering Ibis does. When she is speaking and signing at the same time she is signing PSE which is basically using ASL signs but using English grammatical structure. It's difficult to sign with ASL when speaking because the grammar is different, so the words you are saying don't match up with the signs.
I can help. I would say yes because she is speaking two languages. When you sign and speak at the same time your signing usually gets very sloppy. Your ASL grammar is also messed up because people tend to sign word for word and ASL doesn’t work like that. When you sign your topic comes first but if you have time like today or this morning, then time comes first.
Hope this helps you! It’s a great question and I hope Ryan answers it. He might give clearer information.
She's said in a previous video that she signs what she speaks in the same order only for videos so that people who are learning ASL can link the two words.
I notice that too! I wonder if she uses more ASL signed structure when she's not speaking while signing. It seems to me like she uses more Pidgin Signed English (or PSE) when she's signing and speaking at the same time (PSE is when you use signs from sign language but you usually use them in the English grammar structure).
I am deaf, and I barely use ASL, to be honest, it’s because I am the only one who knows ASL in my family, school, and even friends circle. So I admire you and your dedication. Happy HOLIDAYS to you😃♥️
How do you comminucate with your family or your friends? Do you read lips?that must be hard
Hope you two enjoy your holiday ! I love watching the two of you. You both sharing information, answering questions, and sharing your stories brings a lot of awareness. Slowly the world is changing thanks to people like you. Happy holidays!
I’m always so excited when I see new content from you guys! I really appreciate getting to learn more about deaf culture and experiences while also or practicing and learning more signs. Wishing you a safe and happy holidays!!
You two are going to make someone’s holiday brighter with that gift! That is so sweet of you.
We are a hearing household but I taught my son basic ASL signs beginning when he was an infant and still use them 24 years later. He knows that if I sign while talking mom is super serious cuz I’m communicating with him in two languages at once so he better listen with his ears and his eyes or he’s in deep trouble lol
Thank you for being so open and honest about the deaf community and helping to open the eyes and minds of the hearing community.
Holiday! When I started to learn sign language few years ago my CZcams algorithm showed me your channel and it has been so much fun watching the channel grow. Watching both of you sign has helped me keep up with my sign language!
I just want to say that I’ve been watching y’all for over a year now and I love y’all’s energy. I have so much respect for y’all and the content that you put out there. Hope all is well when the cameras shut off and your families are happy and healthy during the HOLIDAYS hehe. Merry Christmas!
As a bilingual person, i notice I switch from english to spanish all the time when im speaking and I only catch myself when I'm talking to someone who doesn't understand the other language. Also fenty beauty lipgloss are my favorite glosses too!! HOLIDAY
I think it must be different for different people, cuz I'm En/Fr bilingual and I've only ever switched to French accidentally twice in my entire life.
I just told my suitcase we’re not going on HOLIDAY this year because of Covid. Now I’m dealing with all the emotional baggage 😂

you two are such a wholesome couple, watching your videos always makes me smile :) hope you have a lovely holiday season!
Wow, Ellen was really feeling feisty about this! 9:38 - Ryan did you feel the vibration of the car revving its' engine? You turned around to look when it made that noise.
I was wondering the same thing when Ryan turned when the loud car drove by.
Is THAT what it was? I was wondering what made him turn. My laptop speakers do high sounds really well, but they're not so good for low sounds, so with Ellen's voice at a normal volume, I couldn't hear the car at all. Now that you mentioned it, though, I went back with the volume up and I could hear it clearly.
I was watching a different video but I saw this pop up and couldn't resist clicking! Love you guys! HOLIDAY
Aww that means so much! Happy holidays. now go back to your other video :)
@@SignDuoChannel 😂 might be a little late for that
That is so thoughtful of you guys to get one for your fans!! I know after this year,it’s nice to just relax and focus on the holiday🎄!! I’ve always wanted Some name brand makeup but it is just so expensive!!
I've studied linguistics as well and also how to teach English to nonnative speakers. I am so happy to know that you understand language development and fluency issues-- and can explain what happens when someone is learning or knows more than one language. You did a great job explaining the concept of code switching and why you don't simply switch languages for no reason (i.e. by habit). Good job, Ellen. Ryan: You are so informative as well. I love how you two add additional information or insight into what you each say. I'm learning so many new signs from both of you!
Merry Christmas! Hope you all are doing well and love the new Christmas intro!
Love this channel so much💕 Such a sweet couple. I’m currently learning ASL. I love watching this channel with the captions off to practice! ☺️ Holiday!
I do the same all the time!
Happy Holidays!! ♥️ I just signed up for ASL year 1!! I start class on the 8th and i couldn’t be more excited! I tried teaching myself a few years ago but since watching you two it has really inspired me to truly start learning again. So grateful for you guys! One of my favorite youtube channels honestly💖 anyways i hope your holiday is wonderful and filled with joy ✨🌲
Happy Holidays! I love watching your videos!!! Everytime you upload I get a little more excited! My holiday this year is way different then most, a lot less spending, less shopping and less family functions, but a lot more youtube! Sending you holiday love from Oregon!
I don’t think the person who asked the question meant “habit” in a derogatory way to imply sign language is like gesturing, but I understand why it’s a sensitive topic.
I think they meant that since you seem to sign and speak English at the same time a lot from your videos, do you find it hard to just speak without signing or just sign without speaking, since you’re used to doing them at the same time.
I get what you mean about the code-switching too. I know a lot of English & Spanish speakers and they rarely speak in pure English or Spanish, it’s usually Spanglish
Yes exactly! I too completely understand what she's saying as I speak a lot of other languages including English and we tend to use foreign words in an english sentence a lot! Honestly some times it's cause I can't remember the English word at that very second or sometimes it's out of habit. Anyway I hope she sees your comment cause I think this is exactly what the OP meant
Well as she's taught us is not really out of HABIT... it's called code switching....habit would be more like..the same word every single time...that make sense? Yes as knowing more than one language it happens.. and I love it!
As a hearing person who's first language was sign language (older deaf brother, I didnt speak at all until I was 3) I really appreciate that you guys are here educating ppl around the world!!! Thank you both Happy Hoildays to you 3 🤟
Those are actually my favorite glosses too! It’s so funny, I never thought about being in a deaf and hearing relationship so thank you for bringing awareness to so many people including me! Looking forward to your holiday videos! ❤️
I really loved this video and hearing Ellen’s thoughts on this question! also, happy holidays from pennsylvania! wishing you joy and love this season 💛⛄️
Learning and knowing different languages is so beautiful to me since you usually learn about the culture as you are learning the language. Thank you for an insightful response. HOLIDAY!
I agree, I think it is so important to notice when things are different from your norm because it gives you the chance to wonder why someone or something is different or doing something differently and really go down the rabbit hole learning something new. Nothing motivates education quite like curiosity!

How did Ryan know about the noise of the car? (He turned his head)
Can you hear some noises?
I love your videos! ❣️
I think he can probably feel the vibrations
@@marywaters6752 yea in one of their videos he signed that he can feel the vibrations and he can hear some noises but not all

wow! great job
I've always wondered this about Ellen! And I love the holiday season! (:
I love the thought you guys always put into your answers to our questions. I can really see the passion you guys have in educating us!
I love your guy's videos. I like that you're sharing a lot of the struggles and information on deaf culture. I hope you guys have a great time over the holidays.
Loved how he turned so quick at 9:18 as he "heard" the noise. That demonstrates he is very alert and aware of his surroundings.
I was thinking the SAME thing!!!
Ahhh I hope you both had a great holiday! ;) love these videos!!
Happy Holiday (s) to you both!!
Thank You for helping me learn sign language! The day I could watch your videos on mute with no CC felt like getting an A on a final :) and thanks for all your hard work on this channel! We appreciate it!
I’ve learned so much about ASL from watching you guys ! So educational, have a blessed holiday :)🎄✨
i love the drone shots! they're so cool :))
I totally sign more to my family who don’t know how to sign when I’m frustrated and it’s definitely me wanting to communicate properly but I also do it when I’m questioning my friends (who also can’t sign) which I think is more of me wanting to emphasise what I’m saying.
Love these videos so much. I've taken to trying to copy the signs you both do as a way to learn ASL and it's helping a lot. Seeing people use it in long sentences at the same pace as speaking is incredibly educational. It's a bit easier to follow Ellen's movements since she signs slower when speaking, but one day I hope to be as fast as Ryan. 💪💪Happy Holidays y'all! Stay safe!
Happy Holidays! I am so glad I found this channel, even though I'm not learning sign language directly I feel like I'm learning it through exposure and I can recognize certain signs!
It's nice to see someone else that I can actually understand. I'm 69% deaf so I sign to random people and they have no clue what I'm saying
Never in my life I click a video so fast!!! And immediately hit the like button of course. And hope guys have a great HOLIDAY!!!
Thanks you too Jackie! ☺️
I love that you guys talked about code switching between ASL and spoken English!

Thank you so much for having this channel and connecting with so many that want to learn ASL and the culture. Love it. Happy HOLIDAY !!! ❤️💖
Happy holiday season! 🎄 I really appreciate you all taking the time to educate others and advocating ASL as a complex language and not a “habit” :-)
I have a question for Ellen. I am trying to learn sign language because you guys inspire me! Do you have any tips when you started learning sign? (I know the alphabet for starters, and I have many apps but I still need help)
Merry early Christmas 🎄🎅💕
I have been learning ASL from a website called lifeprint.com. They have a 45 min video that you watch and then you can take a quiz. That is just for 1 lesson. They have 15 lessons for each course and then they have 2 courses and are working on a 3 course. They are completely free but if you want to take it as a foreign language class then you have to pay. But if you are just wanting to learn ASL I have found this website to be very helpful.
I realize you didnt ask me lol but, I took a year of asl in high school. From what I remember, once you know the alphabet, start finger spelling random objects or random names through out the day as your doing other things to build muscle memory. Then move on to common phrases. A fun project we did around this time of year, was translate our favorite holiday song into asl. Hope this helps!
Hey Im not sure if this will help for u. But for me when I was learning BSL I watched sign songs. It's basically songs that I like where people use Sign language with them. It's a really fun a quick way to learn if u find the songs u enjoy listening to
@Camryn. I'm fluent in ASL too, and I agree Ryan and Ellen are great. I'd say the best you can do is just try to immerse yourself in Deaf culture and Deaf history. Just try and get involved it takes a lot of practice. As far as learning signs go I like the website Signing Savvy and Bill Vicars has a channel here on CZcams with some signing stuff. Ryan and Ellen have discussed this in a past video too but remember signs aren't the only part of it, facial expressions and body language are important too. Best of luck with learning!
@@leo-alexanderyoung9336 Thanks for the tip!

u guys r really inspiring. i’m trying to learn ASL in my free time. it’s hard with school but i think it’s so important to be able to communicate with everyone on our planet and not just in spoken languages. hope u guys have a happy holiday. and to java too🥰
I noticed that you guys don't look at each other's hands when you guys are signing to each other. Do you use your peripheral vision to tell what they are saying? Happy holidays ❤
Yesss they said it on another video
Yes! In sign language you use your peripheral vision to see the signs. You're supposed to keep your eyes on the person's face (like you normally would when have a conversation in a speaking language) so that you see any mouth morphemes, or facial expressions. :)
It's actually the best way to view the signs because your peripheral vision (a little eye science here!) detects moving objects much easier than your central vision, so you would be able to see the signs and the movements easier than if you were looking directly at the person's hands. Hope this helps! ❤️
Can’t they also just check their viewfinder ?
@@sopita2236 They could, but it's probably rude to watch the viewfinder rather than just watching each other signing.

Anyways, thanks for being you!
Happy Holidays! I love learning about deaf culture and ASL through your videos.
The intro is SO CUTE 🥺💞
Code switching is such an interesting concept. I have heard of it before and you described it really well. My friends who are bilingual say that sometimes they cannot think of the word in one language they will "fill" it with a word from the other language. Especially unique is they said there are some words with specific meanings that do not have a direct translation into English or do not exist in the English language.
I definitely appreciate you guys pointing that out! It was something I had to explain to my parents as I started to learn languages they didn't know and would be able to express better in those languages sometimes. Happy Holiday!
I’ve been learning a lot about code switching this week! Cool to know it also applies to ASL. Thanks for educating us guys :) I hope your holiday season is magical!!
