You should have added what Yu Darvish commented on Bauer playing in Japan. A rough translation is like "he is a person who can explain pitching in a clear and understandable manner based on the latest research and findings, and I believe the baseball in Japan needs such individuals". To be fair, the people in Japan were more skeptical about Bauer coming to play at first, but after seeing his character, performance, approach, etc through the games and his media, they love him for what he brought to the NPB.
Former Red Sox Koji Uehara also said he really likes Bauer's playing style and personality as an athlete, and his teammate Imanaga, who started the game against US in the WBC and will probably be posted to the MLB for the next season, spoke really highly about Bauer as well. I think Japan fits better for him.

Lots of fans in Japan felt like he knocked some fighting mentality that Yokohama has been missing for a long time when he was yelling his teammates to wake up.
Top of the rotation guy from MLB screaming at them shows how he knows that they could do better on the field, and gave some hope to the fans that this year they might finally wake up and go grab that championship..... which hasn't been exactly the case, but yeah a little context for you lol

This video sounds like hate against Bauer.
No matter which team you are a fan of, more than once or twice Japanese people have been hurt by players who came to NPB from MLB. There were players who did not come to Japan despite being paid large contracts. There were players who looked down on Japanese baseball and played atrocious baseball. There were many players who were welcomed with open arms but left in the middle of the season. We were hurt each time. That is why I think that seeing a Cy Young Award-winning pitcher like Trevor respecting Japanese baseball and pitching hard for the Japanese baseball team helps heal the broken hearts of Japanese people. I think that is why even fans of teams other than the BayStars have special feelings for Trevor.

I'm Japanese and didn't know about Bauer until he came to Japan. It was only after he came that I learned about him and what happened to him in America. To be honest, he seems like a different person in Japan than he is in America. When Bauer is in Japan, his expression is very soft.
When he came to Japan, he said, People here listen to me.
Like everyone else, people change themselves depending on the attitude of the person they interact with. People are mirrors that reflect themselves.
I see him as very honest. And he is also a very sincere person. I like his clumsy way of life and I understand it.

I live in Japan and he actually has pitched very well. He’s had a couple bad starts like most pitchers do, but it’s funny how the only times I see his name on western media it only highlights his bad starts, but he’s actually been really good here.

I was watching the game which Bauer was angry, but the mistakes of those infield players were terrible. The commentator also said that it was not a professional play. It's natural for anyone to get angry, even if it's not Bauer.
In addition, the Yokohama BayStars have not won a championship in over 20 years, as both players and coaches lack the enthusiasm to win. Fans have longed for a player with a fighting spirit like Bauer. He is the savior who leads the gentle team to victory.
I was at that game in Yokohama. I’ve been a life long fan of the Baystars but that defense has to be the worst play I’ve seen during the past 9 years (there was one even worse in 2014). Personally, I don’t blame his outburst at all, and I believe the majority of Yokohama fans felt the same. These things happen.

If a batter can go yard on a pitcher and bat flip/ do literally everything under the sun running the bases, than a pitcher shouldn’t get any backlash from doing the sword celebration.

Technically its already been approved by a Japanese player years ago. Tsutsugo consulted him on it cause he changed the side he sheaths the sword to be consistent with Japanese practices.

Ive read what media says US and Japan since he was in MLB. Japanese media has been more neutral than US. He has been nice, smile with Japanese media. Media attitude to Bauer is different US and Japan.
We knew his past but not got bias like US. Japanese culture is called high context, means believe what you see and feel than what people say, feeing culture. In US people believe what people( media) says.
Bauer said " I wants to improve as a player and human. " on his ch before come to Japan. He show us process swallowing his pride, work hard, enjoy, selfless. Im glad that his face is getting softer and softer. He show us his natural character in Japan is no enemy, I guess.

The sword issue wasn't even that bad. His teammate told him that he was doing it on the wrong side so his teammate showed him which side is correct and now Bauer does it on the correct side. In his videos that he posted everyone on his team is now doing the sword. He went down to the minors for a week because the majors did not have a game so he wanted to pitch so in Japan you can move down in the minors for a week to play if you are not playing that week in the majors. With him yelling and telling the players to wake up. This guy is competitive, if you played in any level and your teammate was doing that too someone would be yelling the same thing. I think a lot of people Criticize him because of his past. It seems that he took a break and apologize for what happened and is now doing better.
It's so weird that American media kept on twisting things and re-interpreting stuff.

@@pulsed13 The media lied about him being an attacker when he was the victim of sexual assault by women who lied to him to have sex so she could concoct false stories to go after him for money. Bauer actually proved his innocence in court which is unheard of. No one usually gets the chance to prove innocence in cases like this, they usually settle to remove the risk of losing in court because of lying. Bauer's attacker made the mistake of asking for a restraining order, giving bauer the opportunity to prove she is lying. Bauer WON. Fighting a restraining order is extremely hard because judges error on the side of allowing them.
Bauer proved his innocence to such a degree, the judge called out his attacker for lying and ruled against the restraining order. The suspension by the MLB was just long enough so the dodgers did not have to pay bauer, proving he was suspended because the team just wanted to weasel out of his contract after the team smeared him by bolstering the lie from bauer's attacker. Players should be extremely pissed about this, bauer's entire contract was essentially canceled by a false accusation bolstered by the team that could benefit by not paying bauer. This is a new way teams can turn guaranteed money to non-guaranteed money. A big ramification is that players must stick to long term contracts that are too long for a suspension to cancel to reduce the incentive for teams to suspend players to avoid paying or rostering them. Bauer was an advocate of short term contracts which benefits the above average players.
I support the sword it’s the same thing as bat flips, bat drops, screaming when striking someone out, getting pumped up when reaching a new fastball velo, and even running onto the field after a walkoff it’s all competitive gestures that should be tolerated by everyone and if not then baseball isn’t for them
Also to be fair with his past, he won the case. So legally he didn’t do anything wrong. It actually came out later through one of the accuser’s friends showing texts between her and the accuser where the accuser was saying she was going to “get him” and things along those lines making their night together seem more sinister from her side. Honestly it’s messed up for both buaer and women. Buaer likely will not pitch in the mlb again and now when women who are actually assaulted speak up it’s going to be taken with a grain of salt. So shame on that girl (who operantly was hooking up with tatis and was a padres fan and cheerleader)
He just made a video fully exposing the women who sued him and explained everything. The lawsuits are officially over and he should be able to resign this off-season.
No team will sign him. They're too worried about the "MeToo" crowd protesting. All the GMs and players are chicken shit scumbags. Because none of them will stand up for Trevor or sign him. He's one of the best pitchers in baseball and can definitely help a team win. But these clowns are too worried about "optics." And that woman should be locked up for 10 yrs. He started poorly with Yokohama and got blasted in his first few starts which earned himself a lot of poor media coverage. However he is 7-2 with a 3.67 era now halfway through the season. I am not a Baystars fan nor really a Bauer fanboy but I can say that he has done pretty well for himself so far.
Contrary to what the media has said, he seems to be liked in the team and his teammates do his celebration sometimes. They even got him gloves with the sword on it so unlikely that are bothered or think its racist.
I think his record is 6 wins 3 losses. But since June all his starts have been quality starts.

I mean, he had a significant amount of downtime leading up to moving to another country where he doesn't fluently speak the language and is playing in a league that has a number of differences in rules and traditions, let alone the cultural differences with the audience. It take some time to adjust to that sort of thing and he seems to making major progress so far towards being comfortable and effective. Hes not instantly the best pitcher Japan has ever seen, but hes doing fine as far as i can tell.
He’s had teammates do the celebration with him. He also asked to be sent down because his start got rained out and he didn’t want to wait 11 days between starts. So many of the stories about him are twisted negatively.

1. Bauer had no such arguement or disagreement with his teammate about the sword celebration, that was a miscommuncation and was about a different issue, not wiht Bauer himself.
2. Bauer WAS NOT sent down to the minors, he chose to go there so as not to miss his start due to a delay in pitching rotation.
It’s almost like Bauer has a blog you can watch to verify these things 🤷🏼♂️

As a Japanese, I can say that all Japanese baseball fans love him. He is enthusiastic and trying to fit in with Japanese baseball. His record is 12G 6W-3L 3.46ERA. But he's now allowed 12 home runs, the most in the league.
And he's getting used to Japanese baseball, so I think he'll get better from now on.
I'm a Blue jays fan, and that stat line reminds me of Yusei Kikuchi! This season, Yusei is 7-3 with a 4.13 era but also with the most allowed home runs in the American League. I love both players, and I'm glad that for his first season Bauer has been doing pretty well all things considered
he needs some more games and time to improve his command back to his level. of course he did not pitch for two years and this is understandable.

I honestly kinda miss watching his vlogs. It was great insight into the MLB and the daily life of a starting pitcher. I never really liked the guy, but it was worth watching.
But now I can only look back on it as narcissistic vanity. There's a reason why nobody else does stuff like that. You are literally in _the show_ and you have millions of dollars. Why do you feel the need to do this when literally everyone else just wants some alone time in between games? It was never about the insight, it was always about the spotlight.

As a Japanese person. We appreciate passion and hard working ethic and spirit. It's just our culture.
I mean, Japan is supporting him because he’s by far the best player to come to Japan from the MLB ever. The team that has signed him and the whole league is making a lot off of him going to Japan and the change in country allows them to leave most of his controversies in the past. The Japanese people have little to no knowledge of his history and his sexual misconduct issues and are quicker to overlook than the US fans. The same would be true of course if the situations were reversed. At the end of the day, it’s all money.
Edit: Not sure if there is a language barrier here, but one does not need to be convicted of a crime in criminal court in order for any one individual to dislike or disagree with the actions of another. I do not care if Bauer is brought to criminal court over these specific cases. My coworker never went to court for groping a female worker last year, but he damn sure did it and he was absolutely fired for it. Not facing criminal charges is not a defense to say someone didn’t do something or that we, as people, can’t hold opinions that may even disagree with a verdict (think OJ). Remember, the court lets far more guilty people walk then innocent people jailed (think type 1 vs type 2 error for those who know).
Bauer has been problematic for a long time now and this is just one more thing in a long series of him being a total ass. His teammates have always hated him and he’s only brought negative publicity with hime wherever he’s gone. There’s not some big conspiracy, people in the US are simply done with his diva bullshit.

The Japanese love passion and spirit. I've been stationed in Japan for a few years now and the culture surrounding baseball is more akin to college football in America. The crowd feeds off energy and the team feeds off the crowd. The crowd never stops cheering no matter what and it's incredible. A great example of giving everything your all. Body and soul. That's why Trevor is thriving in Japan. American sports media absolutely hate it when players show any personality at all. Especially if they show any enjoyment about overcoming an opponent. Combine that with some piss poor journalism in America coupled with a motive to absolutely ruin Trevor's rep, you get some absolute bullshit. I still enjoy major league baseball but the media surrounding it is just so awful.

MLB will end up like The FA in soccer, a former pinnacle authority of the sport that got left behind in complacency when the international game appealed better and struck better capital lines to rise, lest attitude changes in owners about making an culturally engaging product instead of a quick buck or sensationalism for the sake of boosting merchandise sales.
He didn't get sent to the minors for poor performance. NPB doesn't work the same way as the MLB. He was going to have to miss a start because of a conflict between the schedule and the pitching rotation, so he took an opportunity to play one game with the minor league team so he didnt miss a start. Also, he appears to get along well with his teammates, and the fans love him (even non-Bay Stars fans).

What blows my mind to bits is the fact that MLB suspended Trevor Bauer for 2 entire seasons of play all because of "allegations" as well as a couple of salty teams & managers. (disclosure, i'm from the UK) it's the kind of thing we don't get to see from pro athletes and it's excellent. he did a whole segment on how the muscles work in relation to throwing the ball and pitching hard. it might be a bit nerdy but it comes across really well and wanting to tell stuff that people don't see from traditional sources.
He was the most interesting player in MLB for all he's done to innovate training and in social media, and really the only player with an actual personality to speak of. He is such a wasted asset for the game. The MLB front office is a bunch of cretins, and the average 'fan' on twitter is a hateful devil, all because MLB sent some nameless prostitutes after him to defame his name. American culture has become garbage. It's a minority to be sure, but that minority is in power.
I think everything he went through was politically motived. He made a lot of enemies in MLB by being so open and critical of the league. Even his teammates didn't like him because of it. So it wouldn't be surprising if someone in the league paid these women to make false allegations against him
The Japanese are genuinely impressed by his essential "way of tackling baseball with an uncommon amount of passion.
He has something in common with Ichiro and Otani, the only difference being whether his outpouring is static or dynamic.
The scene in the game against the Chunichi Dragons, which was also shown in the video, is a reasonable argument from the pitcher's point of view. It was just that the outburst was dynamic, just like him, so it stood out more than it should have.
Above all, it would be unfair to turn a blind eye to the fact that, even after all that turmoil, he still wears the blue uniform of Yokohama and continues to make efforts to make the city a champion city.
It is unfair to report the fact that he is living a full life far away from the city where he was once so tormented, but it is still unfair to twist the facts to make a vicious accusation.

Bauer has great content, and is great content. Watching Bauer succeed in Japan is like watching that movie "Mr. Baseball" all over again. His youtube page is also pretty awesome. Its not only his amazing pitching knowledge but how he goes about setting up his body to be at its best for every start. He really is pretty scientific about all aspects of baseball. I encourage people to check it out, it will really change your perspective on the guy.
Sad thing is we all know he didn’t sexually assault anyone. But once one person “claims” that they were sexually assaulted and others see the media attention and the publicity, many more will “claim” he sexually assaulted them. This is the case for many and it won’t change until the people who make false claims are punished the same.
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if these women were paid to accuse him. We all know that he made a lot of enemies in MLB with his criticisms of the league and of the juiced balls. He also had a lot of teammates who didn't like him. And all it takes is one woman to make a false allegation, and then predictably other women will join, probably smelling money in the water.

Prior to this season, I probably never gave Trevor Bauer a second thought. He didn't play for any of my favorite teams, and his antics seemed to be a bit overblown. His exposing of the sticky stuff scandal seemed to earn a lot of hate for him, and I found it highly convenient that the allegations against him came out not long after. Even still, I didn't really pay much attention, up until the point he signed to play in the NPB. I've always been interested in baseball in Japan, and started watching his videos to get a glimpse of what I've been missing out on. I can honestly say now that I've become a fan of his. The videos he puts out are excellent, giving very detailed information on how he gets ready for games, what he does in his free time, and oh, you can't talk about him without mentioning his glove reviews. Seriously, he gives the absolute best reviews, putting product reviewers for a lot of other products to shame. I'm rooting for him and wishing him success.

All these coaches and trainers hated him for ignoring their training suggestions and sticking with his own training routine that helped him go pro. From the beginning he had been stuck with the reputation of being "uncoachable" and a "diva." He also got into a ton of trouble for calling out all the pitchers who keep using illegal substances in 2018. Hes right though, as the only way for any pitcher to increase their fastball's spin rate is with foreign substances, specifically pine tar.
So it was the combination of pissing off coaches and catchers with his training routine, and the MLB commissioners office on his Twitter crusade against pitchers using foreign substances, that when the bs sexual assault charges came along, they suspended him. Even after they were all dropped, the League still banned him for so many games. They just wanted to send a message to the other players what they would do to them if they ever tried to show them up. Its sad though that the players union didnt stick up for Trevor Bauer.

Whatever his reputation in the United States, there is no rule that Japan must follow suit. NPB and Japanese baseball fans see and appreciate Trevor Bauer for what he is. And we don't want other countries to interfere in any evaluation. The NPB saw value in Shohei Ohtani as a pitcher and hitter, developed him as a two-way player, and helped him pursue his dream of making it to the MLB. Likewise, if Trevor Bauer wants his team to win the NPB title, he just wants to see it.
No team would allow Ohtani to pitch and hit until he threatened to leave for the MLB.
He was the only MLB player with a personality. Also an important innovator in baseball and off the field. All thrown out because he called out corruption and some random prostitute tried to defame him. The information in the video is not totally correct about the fan club. The $15K price is only for the highest tier and only a few of those are available. There is a regular tier that is $2380. The regular one gets you invited to special events, an autographed official Jersey, Bauer Outage apparel, signed ball in a case and official fan club plaque.
Japan understand what the NBA and NFL does here- you can market individual players and create brands away from the team. I'm a BayStars fan, and yeah he's putting in the work, took some time for him to adjust as expected but his pitching is great below the 100 pitches. He's showing dedication and strong spirit, Japanese fans love that, even though he ends up throwing way beyond his limit, and compromises the team.

Rob Manfred is the owner's pet, he has zero influence on this. It's 100% public backlash or should I say, media backlash. The first team that signs him will be hounded by headlines like "[MLB TEAM] SIGNS RAPIST!" "[MLB TEAM] PROMOTES MISOGYNY" and so on.

He’s done this multiple times, where a game would get canceled due to rain, hence due to the pitching rotation, he won’t throw for 9 days. So he goes to the minors on day 4, pitches, comes back and then pitches day 9. In japan, there is no 40-man roster. Players can go up and down any time they want

Also, whether or not you’re being actively prosecuted makes a big difference in Japan. And if found guilty of almost anything, there’s generally no way back. At the accusation stage, the public generally stays neutral.

I wouldn't be surprised if he takes an offer that's less than half of what he made in the US. He's already made a ton of money, and he seems to legitimately enjoy pitching in Japan way more than the US. He might just take the best offer he can get in Japan and run with it.

Yeah, it's pretty funny how poorly this video aged but it was honestly just a matter of time until Bauer pissed off the NPB and Japanese fans too. Dude really sucks at just going out and playing baseball (the one thing he actually gets paid to do).
This whole mis-characterization of "And no MLB team wanted the risk of signing him with all of his legal baggage, even for the league minimum" is a bit disingenuous.
When he got Released from the Dodgers, he's still getting paid by the Dodgers through the rest of the term of the contract. If another MLB team does sign him, they could pay him League Minimum, and the Dodgers would still be on the hook for (Original Salary) minus (League Minimum), meaning he would still be getting $20 or $30 Million for the year, and the only way he could make more money is if some team was going to sign him for a deal worth more than the Dodgers' deal. That just was NOT going to happen. I'm sure his agent was fielding interest from MLB teams, but the agent was probably very frank in their discussion with teams and said "unless your offer is going to supersede the current Dodgers contract, we're not interested."
But, by going to Japan, he's able to keep getting his Dodger deal, PLUS the BayStars $4 Million for the year. Why would you NOT go to Japan in a situation like this?
The US media is so quick to paint him as persona non grata in any clubhouse in MLB, but people have looked passed far more serious accusations when it comes to someone that can perform on the field of play.
Bauer being blackballed had nothing to do with the accusations against him. He made the league look bad during the sticky stuff scandal and the owners decided to punish him for it. To give some context, people in Japan were in favor because at that time Baystar was around a game or so behind the 1st place Hanshin Tigers. We've been away from Championship for some time, always ending up a little short, when we know we got the talent for it. Lots of fans took that "Wake up" as a wake up call to become a championship team. We all thought felt like he was trying to inject some of that winning mentality to other teammates.

Charges were dropped. Thats what matters here. Bauer is an entertainer. He is doing for the NPB what Ohtani is doing for the MLB -- he is sparking a huge amount of interest in Japanese baseball. People like me, who otherwise had no interest in the NPB, now follow him and his games very closely and in the process, learning about all the other teams and players. Standard operating procedure for the mainstream media in the US. When they want to make someone or something look bad, they'll go out of their way to do it.
Now, think about this: if they are willing to go this hard on a baseball player that hasn't been arrested, had no charges, no solid evidence against him (especially when compared to other players that have BLATANTLY beat their wives, yet they are STILL playing in MLB), then what else are they lying about?
That's what happens when you're a bad person. We're not gonna highlight and praise him doing positive things when he should be in prison
That's how the US media works now. Once you are accused, then they have to follow the narrative that you're automatically guilty.

he really does seem to be having fun playing ball in Japan. Good for him. Training methods being found to be quite effective even in the worst light probably feels nice. Like him or not his passion for baseball is undeniable

Also he wasn’t brought down to minors because he did bad. It was the weird rotation in Japan he wouldn’t pitch for the next week. Baystars not wanting to keep him cold brought him down just for one game so he can stay warm and immediately then brought him up. Realistically he’s actually really controversial and I wouldn’t necessarily trust the sport media that he’s suing and the tuff translation to Japanese to English all to well. If you look at his stats he’s pitching extremely well and most times in his game it’s unearned runs that he gives up. If you being honest he never was convicted, his stats are good, and it seems to me Japan loves him for a good reason.
His insights for the game of baseball are very entertaining to watch on his vlogs. Brings me back to when I used to play. I was never at his level, but with the technology and data he uses to improve his game, it's brought a whole new dimension to the sport I love. Gotta give him credit for that.
If you watched his videos you would know he was sent down so he could pitch more innings, he didn’t want to miss a start due to a off week. Was not sent down due to performance.

I honestly hope he stays in Japan. He is loved there and he seems to be much happier there as well.
Truthfully, he's just a big nerd. That grates on some athletes here in the US. In Japan, it's just normal. I wouldn't be surprised if nobody showed interest in Bauer because he wanted to play in Japan, and Chalupa (Rachel Lupa, his manager) poisoned it by asking for more than the league minimum.
If he does stay over there and lives happy, more power to him.
We here in America don't deserve him.
As a Yank living in Japan who wants to go watch and appreciate his play, I hope he stays here, too. I know I only planned to stay for a few years but it's been almost 20 now. Japan's much saner and kinder than the U.S. is now.
Its actually crazy the lengths the american media will go to make bauer a villian. Even when it should be over, when there is no evidence of fault on his part, they still find some way to make him evil, hate worthy, and controversial enough that no MLB team will sign him. Really tells you a lot about the actual motivations of the media today 🙃

Bauer basically went to war with the MLB during the sticky stuff era and was a key figure in exposing it. The MLB has a personal vendetta against him because of this.

There's no way that other teams didn't want him, even if he is controversial, but Rob Manchild got his ego busted and now he wants to keep Bauer looking terrible. Is it possible that Trevor did what they've claimed? Sure it is. But there's been no actual proof yet to convict him, and actual proof to back up his claims.

Seems there's a lot of folks into that sort of thing, BDSM is a huge kink apparently, I'd have to assume this is an extension of it. Either way, I don't care about his personal life, it's what he brings to the game. MLB has shown that they don't care if (alleged) domestic abusers play, yet they've made an example out of Trevor...and the reason is fairly obvious.

No matter what you do, everyone is going to perceive you in a different way. It gets more spotlight because Trevor Bauer is a celebrity, but it's part of life.
All you can do is continue living, just like Bauer has.

Ignoring the allegations for a second - Trevor Bauer committed a "cardinal sin" - he spoke truth to power. Baseball to me very much seems like the a 'good ol' boys club' steeped in 'traditions' and 'unwritten rules' etc. Bauer took on the power structure by wanting consistency and transparency - in a league that is notorious for cheating and insular power. The owners weren't going to do anything but blacklist him. (edit: the word "in")

If you work with somewhere where you believe stuff needs changed, should you do so appropriately or in a way that makes everyone hate you. Seems Trevor is not some perfect angel that was just too honest and transparent.

Honestly, good for Trevor. He's being apreciated for his skills and he's playing in Japan. It's certainly better than the current state of American sports in general, where politics is eating it alive.

The biggest issue for Trevor is American Baseball shines light on great players who uphold the unrealistic “good guy” standards.

In Japan, they just want you to be best at baseball. They don’t care about your creed, they care about how you play the game that they love.
In a few ways though, I guess your opinion on Bauer likely lines up with your feelings on the “unspoken rules” I’m on the side of Bauer is a great player, and the unspoken rules ruin modern baseball.
The fact Bauer has decades long beef with Gerrit Cole (🤮) is really all I ever need to know about him.

It's not hard to understand why he's popular. Think about it from a NPB fan's perspective. If you're a NPB fan, why wouldn't you want to see how a Cy Young winner would pitch in your league? And with his vlogs he's shown he's taking the NPB competition seriously, which, again, NPB fans are bound to appreciate.

His pitching knowledge is second to none currently. His analytical approach to mechanics, grip, and finger pressure helped me very much with my own pitching.
Coming back to this video is a little funny considering he himself got ran out of Japan as well
