game 1 was a combination of guess the elo and how to lose at chess
Except for that one GTE episode where someone blew the whistle before it got far (I don't remember offhand which episode that was), I don't think any of Levy's games made it. BTW, aren't *most* GTE games basically How to Lose at Chess games?
I'm 1200 rated, there are definitely many games at this level that play these tactics.
Levy really should've played slower once he realized how solid his opponent was setting up his position.
Honestly I'm an aggressive player that loves the Vienna gambit as white, but when black shows they play solid and understand the threats, I retreat from the natural attacking position that that opening wants, and play much slower and start doing waiting/defensive moves.
Playing as black I almost always play the Caro and play slow and wait for my opponent to make a mistake, or at least I try to keep the position safe and equal.

@@Jared7873 Not quite. I mean, yeah, after Be2 Levi's opponent could blunder mate by either going Kg2 or by doing *literally anything* other than Qf2. That said, there is a possible variation with Ne7 first *if* white takes the "free" knight.

@@starmorpheus and Hikaru and Levy are a lot closer in ability than Levy and an 1100. There’s just no way that he should’ve been so outplayed against someone who’s that much lower than him
@@IVLxJAK2 I believe it's quite the opposite? From 1100+ ELO -> 2300+ ELO is a lot easier than 2300+ -> 2700+ ELO. It's why Magnus' dream of being 2900 is seen as a pipe dream because you gain a miniscule amount of rating with wins against other 2700+ GMs.
@@starmorpheus In terms of probability, the probability that some with ~2400 Elo beats a ~2800 Elo is way higher than a ~1100 Elo beating a ~2400Elo.
If i trust the Elo calculators, you have around 10% chances of beating an opponent who has 400 points of Elo more than you do, whereas you only have 1% of beating an opponent with 800Elo points more than you (i don't have the percentage for a difference of 1300 but you can easily guess it's way smaller).
In terms of ability i also tend to believe that an IM is closer to a GM than to a 1100 ELo player. The gross difference in terms of game comprehension is not THAT big, it's just that it's almost impossible to reach the GM level. Just like if your maximum running speed is 20km/h and you're running against someone whose running speed is 22km/h. The speed difference in itself is not that big but it does not mean that you will be able to run at 23km/h someday.
Honestly that was the most typical and relatable 1100 game I've ever seen on CZcams. That IS how 11-1300s play I swear to god.

@@BenPhoenix In total? Some 5 years maybe. But continuously less than 2 years, came back during the pandemic. And even that is a stretch, There were many holes in that 2 year period, like for exam months. I so want to play chess uninterrupted, but life sucks and it's not so easy.

You got this! The intermediate bootcamp course actually helped me go from about ~1050 to 1250 within a couple of months earlier this year, playing atleast 3-4 15|10 rapid games a day and analyzing every game after. The most important things that helped me at that stage was to maintain the CCA(checks, captures, attacks) checklist and as simple as it sounds, just to scan the board after each move to see if there is a tactic I can go for.
I'm currently just under 1500 for context.

I know that my time management was terrible during the game. I was indeed very nervous and wanted to just make sure that I just played solid. I usually tend to play too fast for my own good, so I tried to take it a bit slower. It was a really fun game!

The best part about that first 1100 game was that I'm also a 1400 (not that much better than a 1100) and could guess his moves and the moves Levy played. I even got the bd2 move which levy should've played but he didn't (he saw it in analysis). Days like these make me happy
1400 with black has 80% winning chance and 8% drawing chance against 1100 so that's actually a huge difference.
I'm 1437 and I can confidently say that 1400s are much better than 1100s
1100 with white had 0.0000076% chance of winning against 2400, that's actually pretty crazy

@@jaideepshekhar4621 it's not *that* suspicious from a game standpoint. What's suspicious is the rating. Like Levi played horrendously but he didn't play bad by standards of an 1100. Obviously there is the possibility that an 1100 just happened to have studied an opening and managed to spot nearly every strategy available. Like if this were guess the elo would you rate this 1100? When I was 1100 I was playing games where some people would just miss that the pawn that was taken was guarded by the queen
@@jmj0795 Well, they didn't really spot every strategy. They focused on just one. Otherwise there were defensive moves. Sure, the rating is low though.

I haven't been on Chessly yet but I would think a search board would be helpful.
You play the moves on the board and the website suggests the lines to go and look at. That way if there are transpositions they will appear in the results.

A suggestion for making chessly the best it can possibly be is having a "boardstate search" function.
I imagine it like: you have a board, set a position and use a search botton that scans all the chapters in courses on chessly that have that position and shows them. If you have the course you can click and go to it and if you don't own it it can appear with like a lock symbol.
I think that would be next lvl qol

Levi did a great job in the first game playing like an 1100 by completely blundering his bishop.
I love how long it took Levy to decide on O-O, between that, Kf8 and Bh6. It's hilarious because the engine is equally as indecisive.
That 1100 dude booted up stockfish discreetly, which is sporadic cheating. No way an 1100 plays such and then immediately blunder two pieces that didn't even involve any tactic.

Maybe a cool idea would be to put in a particular move order and chesly tells you what courses of yours have that position in them.
There is a wonderful honesty to the first game in this episode. Every good teacher learns from their student. Levy was honourable to his student/opponent and open to the audience in terms of his thought process. These are gifts from a deeply talented player and teacher.
I’ve been playing chess for fun and had furiously avoided any real study, but after hearing about some of these concepts so much by you I’ve solved some big weak points and my online ranking has shot up. Thanks!

Sharp openings are ones that have a lot of tactics, and both sides can get hurt real bad if they don't know what they're doing. Dynamic is basically the same thing. Solid openings are ones that have no real weakness, but don't really test the opponent too much either
sharp openings cut down the board with pins and long range pieces, solid openings smother you with the entire army, and dynamic openings usually refers to a gambit. Sacking of a pawn or enabling a doubling of pawns in order to get an extra tempo

The game against the 1100 looked like one of my games. Especially when you took the pawn on e3 with your bishop that was defended by his queen. I do that mess all the time! The only part that didn’t look like one of my games was that you still won.

Hi! I’m not fantastic at chess but at 54:36 can black do knight to a5 safely to protect the bishop and attack the queen, giving them their line of sight back? That gives them time to reinforce the bishop on b7 and keep their plan somewhat steady right?
I'm in you boat, no great myself but yes I think. Then white goes e4, then maybe by e5 to bring the attack onto the ohe black knight 🤔

pretty sure at 8:56, moving that dark bishop to h6, then e3 will be mate if the 1100 doesn't see it. the only moves i see can prevent that would be king to f2, blocking the light bishop, or some other move that defends the e3 square. other than that, the square was pretty undefended for the most part

in the first game, I calculated the move that he won your knight exposing the rook, but I saw there was an in between move (not to move your bishop coz then his rook moves) that the rook was on the back rank, so knight takes knight and then disregarding the queen threat you first take their rook with check, and only then move out of the way with your queen, not losing on material as much
Game one sums up my games both on winning and losing side lmao🤣. I'm glad it's not just me that loses my mind lol to the bots lol

Hey Levy! This truthfully is something that I just want to state. PLEASE DONT TAKE THIS AS HATE. I love your content. Here is why your analytics of “win at chess” is worse by a long shot of your other content. So I teach martial arts to little ones and there is this concept called “command voice”. During your recaps and your guess the elo, you legit bring the energy to the table. It’s not that the content is any more or less interesting than this, but your delivery makes the difference. Look at how Danya’s speedruns still brings the energy to the table. You turn into a completely different human. Your voice gets monotone, your brain functions nonchalantly, and the energy just lags. When I teach the kids, if I do not have my commands sound like a command then it will not pass as a command. It’s the same context here: command your audience energetically. Example: *monotone,thinking voice* well if I allow queen f8 I’m just gonna get checkmated
How to fix: “well if I allow queen f8 then I lose the game, let’s look at this variation where I still may be losing but it looks promising”
