SEO for Images: How to Create File Names, ALT Text and Titles

- One of the easiest and often overlooked optimization opportunities is the actual image file names themselves. Those should use a few carefully chosen keywords - ideally, keywords the image could rank for - while omitting stop words (a, the, in, of, etc.) and separating keywords by hyphens.
Image ALT and title attributes are the next simplest settings that not only help images rank higher in search, but also build the page’s relevancy and improve user experience.

A great youtube video, it answered the questions I needed answering. Thanks again

I may not need to know this info now, but in this day and age it's very probable this knowledge will be needed eventually and I can speak up with it and act! Almost at 20000! Keep going Chris! Another great vid yet again!
Thank you Matt. I'm hungry and grinding out these videos.

Thanks Adam! Fun fact: I own a real Triceratops centre ivory horn from 65 million years ago (I noticed your Dinosaur photo).
Your so great! Thanks a bunch :-)
Thanks! Regards from Colombia, South America! 👋
For something so, so easy, it always amazes me to see how many web design companies simply don't do this :)
Hopefully this can change. One video at a time. I hope all is well Chris!
Good video, thanks
loving it all the way from Kenya.
I love Kenya! Thank you for watching.
So many people overlook image filenames.
Loving this new upload time btw - perfect for us Brits :-)

This should be common practice, it is very easy and will help with your website optimization. Have a great weekend Adam.
So simple to understand.
Thanks mate, hugs from norway
You have amazing content. I have a question, so if you have more images for one page do you keep using the same keyword phrases (Ex: best web designer in Toronto) for the page?
Thank you!
Thank you Rosa!
Thanks, do I need to put a description or caption as well for SEO?
Very nice information! greeting from Vienna ✌️✌️
Thanks.
Thanks for the great video. What if I duplicate my landingspage to target a different keyword? Should I upload the same images and rename them/ update the ALT tags (with that particular keyword)? By the way, I make the text for these pages unique. Thank you very much!
Great Video! Question: I'm in the beauty business and my website has flowers as a background. What Alt Text do you recommend I use for the background? My business has nothing to do with flowers.
thanks
Thanks
Great image tips that many people bypass.
I agree with you Fabio.
Hey Thank you for this!! you mentioned that you use hyphens in the title name. Why did you remove them from alt text? without them wouldn't google read it as one big word? if I will leave the hyphens to the alt text as well would it make a problem?
Wow thumbs up
any tips on using and editing images to wix template site?
Hello! Question: there must be a way to insert the alt tags but without making them visible on mouse over. Especially when the alt text is a bit long, it is so bad looking... Thank you!
Simplicity I like it
hello! Thanks for the lesson. QUESTION: If i am optimizing images for a website that has already been built (aka. someone else uploaded all the images without optimizing the file names) do I need to re download those same images, then change the file names and reupload them? Or is changing the title name/alt text enough?
Depends on how much time you have. For the best results I would recommend that you delete the image then re-upload with new file name and alt tags.
Tnx it was very informative. 1 question: why you ignored description section? Doesn't it important to rank images faster?
Hi, when I use the same image in another page, different topic, do I duplicate the image? or what? thanks for your help
My opinion is you should re-upload the image with a different file name. But I think you should try both options and see what works best! All the best.
Thank you for the tips! I have a question. So when you have 4 or 5 images for your blog, you can use per image another keyword right?
I'd use different variations of the same keyword. For example: web-design-toronto.jpg, toronto-website-design.jpg, Toronto-web-design-company.jpg, web-developer-toronto.jpg, etc...
@@ANerdsWorld Hi Chris! Thanks for the awesome video! I came back to watch it again because I love how you walk through and explain this. I am using a free Google site for the time being. I don't care for their fonts, but can't upload the one I'm using for branding unless it's within a graphic for licensing purposes. So, since I'm having to make all my web text into graphics, I have a lot of graphics. Do I use Alt text on all of them? Also, I just learned that the File Name and the Alt txt are found within the Image tag, and other newbies may not realize that either. I was having trouble figuring out what went where, but now I get it, (kinda) lol Don't mind me over here, Ms. Self-Taught Sally 🤓👩💻🙋♀️
I made a mistake, and put a lot of pictures with some random stupid file names. Now I should fix it all. I use a plugin for optimizing size, but, is it necessary to erase all pictures now and start all over or I can just add ALT name?
Thank you in advance
how to fill captions and descriptions i have an idea about title and alt please i want to fill all my product images captions and descriptions please reply quickly
nice gem !
Gracias !
Do you use any software in particular to compress the file size of your images before uploading?
Good Afternoon Franco, we use a WP plugin named "Smush". All the best!
A Nerd's World thanks for the response I’ll check that out!
This was great, ty. But question....What if you name the file with all the keywords, but you're uploading it to say your Etsy/Ebay store? You can't (to my knowledge) edit ALT text there. So would you need to put the file on your personal website for best results?
That is correct, this video is for when you're uploading the image to your own website. At that time you can then enter in ALT tag and such. That being said, you should still upload photos with keywords when using etsy, eBay and other sites similar.
Thank you so much! Not sure if you'll even see this, but is it ok to include the location in your alt text? Even if the picture was not taken in the location you're doing business in? So for example, could I write "frosted cupcakes in Bend, Oregon" even if the photo is just a stock photo of cupcakes? I'm probably overthinking this, I just don't want the Google gods to strike me down 😝
Yes, that is not a problem at all.
@@ANerdsWorld Thank you so much I appreciate it!
thank you for this! someone told me that long file names doesn't rank well. is this true?
I can't completely agree with that statement, but I would say that you shouldn't make the filename too long.
@@ANerdsWorld oh I see, okay thank you so much for the response !
if a blind person was navigating your site, the screen reader would read best web designers in Toronto when it came across that image of the 2 computers on a desk.. I thought the alt text was to accurately describe the contents of the image shown? ie 'male driver sat in a red car at traffic lights in a city street'
I cannot find where I can actually write in the ALT text...? What program do you use for that?
Alison, it depends what service you are using for hosting. I have a free Google site and one option for each image is to add it right there after I upload each one, and/or if you right click on any image and go to "Inspect", it will open the HTML info, that is more complicated because you would have to find where your image is within all the code, but search for a vid on it if need be. I have another site where they give me separate fields to add in each type of tag, (meta description, title, etc.). From what I've read, I'm pretty sure Wordpress has the fields as well - people please help her if what I'm saying doesn't make sense! 😁
Hi Chris. Rick from Vancouver and former tee-oh boy here again. We're allowed 125 characters before the alt text gets truncated by the 'readers' so do you think there is something to be gained from getting as close to that number of characters as possible?....assuming of course that it doesn't entail keyword stuffing nor writing that is off point. Please advise.
I don't believe you need to use all that space. I'd leave it as short and sweet as possible while including the keyword you want to target, keeping in mind that you need to be descriptive for those unable to see the image.
The image is a photo of two imac computers sitting side by side. You title it as best-web-design-toronto which isn't what the image is about.... now if you keep repeating those keywords in your text isn't that something google will penalize you for? keyword stuffing?
thanks for the great video. I'm an artist and I want to sell my prints online. When I change the filenames of my images, like you suggested, I'm afraid to cause a mess in the folders on my devices. 😟
It's like me saying, I'm scare to increase my sales online. I don't think anyone would say that. Figure out the best method for yourself and make it happen, it will help in your Google ranking which should equal more profit for your pocket. All the best Frank!
but that is not image that is attachment... all alt and title disappears after attachments off.
So there is no value in filling out caption and description?
Miss you buddy, I hope everything is ok and Grace n the kids are doing good! Hit me up sometime, love to hear from you!
is it important to write image description too????? pls answer this. everybody talks about title and alt txt but nobody talks about caption and description.
The description is not as important. To answer your question directly, in my entire life I have never once added a description to an image.
Is the caption and the description also important for SEO?
No.
@@ANerdsWorld and what about one page websites - are these generally a no-go? Or not persé?
@@James-uz9se No go for sure. I would never build or recommend a one page website if you are attempting to rank on Google for any real keywords. When a client asks me to build a one pager, I tell them my opinion and then they can decide if they would like to move forward or not.
@@ANerdsWorld You are a hero 🤓
So you add hyphens - on some, but you remove hyphens on others. Why? I definitely understood your video and thankyou for that. But you described long tail key words (also know as keyword phrases) as word? Why?
I WOULDN'T say a long tail keyword is also known as a keyword phrase. Let's look at an example:
Keywords (or keyword phrases):
Lawyer Toronto
Traffic Lawyer
Long Tail Keyword:
Best Criminal Lawyer in Downtown Toronto
Experienced DUI Traffic Lawyer in Toronto
All the best!
Chris
@@ANerdsWorld Thanks Chris. I think were both right. Keep up the great videos.

Great advice man.TY! the hat is just ridiculous though
Ignore the hat, you're not wearing it. Your photo is of a baby ant eater, and it doesn't bother me one bit. Learn to keep your negative thoughts to yourself. All the best!
Gucci everythang
Yeah, they know my name in that store.
@@ANerdsWorld Did they need a website? haha
@@waz_boolin6582 No they don't (need a website) and I don't think I would want to take on a project of that size (at this current point in time).
Hey, thanks or your guidance! I've been following this tutorial;:
czcams.com/video/CVCVcqRD17A/video.html
Where she says:
1) You should include spaces in between your title words - where you say there should be no spaces.
2) You should include the pipe symbol (|) in between words, where you say use hyphens (-)
3) You should include your brand name (in my case blog name) at the start of every image title, where you don't say that.
Is she wrong? I'm lost with so many different explanations. I really appreciate any help you can provide.
Hahah. I appreciate you!
he talks i listen lol hes like the dave ramsey or gordon ramsey of web design business
Thank you Nia!
Horrible hat but excellent content and delivery. Thank you.
I guess this is 2022 and strangers can openly share their opinion on someones fashion. Therefore I can openly say that I don't like your choice in spectacles, nor your clothing. Does that seem normal to you? It's not normal to me. Learn to communicate without adding your negative opinion with a stranger, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I didn't buy, nor wear the hat for you Adam. Thanks for watching!
