Why the Threat of Government Shutdowns Keeps Happening | WSJ

  • It appears Congress is poised to avert a government shutdown just hours before the deadline. In every other country, if a government agency doesn’t have a budget for the new year, they just use last year’s. But in the U.S., Congress needs to pass a new budget every single year or agencies have to shut down.
Add in the lack of other opportunities to pass laws, a dysfunctional budget process and polarizing politics and… you have the threat of Congress not completing their most basic task nearly every year. WSJ explains.

A balanced budget all the time is a terrible idea.
It's like if I lost my job because AI replaced all the engineers and I went back to school to retrain in another field. Or if I decided I wanted to get my MBA and took a break from working. Or when my kids go to college.
And it's even worse for a government. When there is a recession and people and companies are belt tightening, the government becomes the only entity that can break the cycle and get spending going again.
Government borrowing is healthy at a macroeconomic level. Plus the USA is at only 122% debt to gdp. To buy a house I'm allowed to borrow 250% of my GDP (salary). All these threats of government shutdowns is worse for the US government financially than the debt itself. The shutdowns got the US bond rating downgraded so that it is more expensive to borrow.
It would be nice if incoming elected officials had to put all their wealth into a trust managed by a third party and were prohibited from touching their wealth (without trustee permission) until they left office. Remember the good old days when public servants were selected at random and served for a year after dokimasia? Minus the fact that only applied to men.

Life in America has been extremely difficult over the last 23 years! I've had enough! Why can't they realize they have achieved submission a long time ago?

i read thousands of books and traveled thousands of roads!
ex: i seen alexander and his armies descendants.
here is a brief history of our infrastructure: our infrastructure dates back to the great depression!
      do you know why?!
john keynes was invited by fdr to discuss how to fix the usa economy. john told fdr to hire people to dig a hole and hire people to fill the hole. basically keep the economy running without stopping. when fdr saw the progress of john's idea. he implemented the great infrastructure project to build roads.
since then we just bandage the infrastructure without really renovating it, which is why our roads are so bad!
do you know why we just keep bandaging our roads?!
cause we use excuses to spend all the money into the military to start wars, so the top 1% and the gov people can make blood money instead of spending the money into our infrastructure, education, healthcare, homeless, etc.
imagine all the money we spent in ukraine that are use internally!!!
the usa spent the most money into the military, but we cannot compete with china! so what happen to all our money?!
most of the money are pocket by the top 1% and the gov people!
did you know that we failed our hypersonic missile again, but china hypersonic missile can reach the usa?
did you know that china sold laser weapons in saudi military summit?
did you know that china proved they can detect our undetectable sub by demo it, which was why our sub crashed?
china only spent a fraction into their military, but their military is so much more advance than ours!
please dont even get me started on ip theft, if you wanna start, you better be well prepare or dont bother replying.
should i keep going on pointing out how corrupted is our gov and why we are in this mess?

It's also the sort of thing that would not go without opposition. Alexander Hamilton argued against this idea in the Federalist Papers, and his reasoning is just as sound now as it was then. A better idea might be to end Congressional seniority, which makes each representative and Senator effectively worth more the longer they've been in office. This is especially important for US senators from small states who feel they have to stay in office as long as possible just to make sure their states are adequately represented. Such a change wouldn't even require a new law - each chamber can just change their internal rules on the matter.

Let the Federal government be shut down for awhile. Many companies have to lay off workers when their operations are unprofitable. When does that happen for government? It should.
The US military, hardly an fiscally efficient branch of government, is the ONLY Federal branch that has ever been downsized as a result of accomplishing a mission.

    • @Ryan_Christopher
      @Ryan_Christopher Před 9 měsíci

The US Military is not its own branch of government. The Country ain’t run by a Ruling Junta.
The Military Departments fall under the Executive, which IS a branch of the US Government. The Executive can Expand or Contract the Armed Forces as needed. The Legislature just has to sign-off on the plans.

@Ryan_Christopher You're right. I should have written "department" of the federal government.
But the point remains. Federal departments are rarely, if ever, downsized. And rarer still, is a department reduced, or eliminated because it has achieved it's mission.

There's new vaccine technologies (such as mRNA), there's new cancer treatments, and now we're entering the era of wearable medical devices.
