I live 20 minutes away from Woodinville Whiskey Co., and have been enjoying their products since they began. Had nearly every variation they've made, and some cask strength that I've gotten to bottle myself. They are among my top favorites, and I'm glad to see them getting some recognition outside of WA. Thanks to the wives for including this!
They did good! I have only seen a few of their releases so hopefully we will see more soon!
I don't drink whiskey - never acquired a taste for it. But I somehow I have gotten caught up in these SLB videos and have become fascinated by the whole bourbon culture. I took my first ever Bourbon distillery tour last week (Wilderness Trail in Danville KY), and I really appreciated it. i spent years working in the tobacco industry and it has a lot of similarities. And when we did a tasting at the end, I could actually appreciate what was there - even if personally I would never order a whiskey myself. Thanks for the videos!
You know you might drink a bit when the silhouette in the thumbnail reminds you: "Looks like a Woodinville bottle!"
I used to ride my bike by their distillery every weekend. Good video as always SLB! 👍👍
Ahhhh lol!
Great Job! I love seeing these blind tastings! I've never tried Woodinville, but will put it on my list to look for. Thanks!
Love watching these. Gives a more unbiased opinion on the whiskey.
Thank you!
The entire Woodinville lineup is very impressive -- every expression is worth exploring. The Cask strength rye is phenomenal.
Absolutely!
WA State bringing it! You guys need to do a WA State Whiskey review, we’ve got many great distilleries out here and our prolific wine country makes for the availability of some remarkable finishes
Oh I bet! Would love to learn more about NW whiskey!
Love it when you guys guess. Don’t feel ashamed when you go out on a limb and get one wrong. You guys basically batted .500 on a pitcher who throws hundreds of different types of pitches.
This is true lol. Appreciate the confidence!
Woodinville is about 50 miles from my house! Glad to see a local whiskey win!
Woodinville! One of the best craft distillers, and a rival to the best from the legacy distillers. As this blind test shows! Great session, Kurt, Trent and Mrs. Kurt!
Thank you!
I want 3 bottles of the SLB single barrel! One for personal, one to share, one to keep for the future (and share with my kids when they’re older). Would love to be able to do tastings with them one day. What an honor it must be to do this show with family!
The only reason I do it to be honest. Such a good time!
I'd love to see a best bottle under $20....or more challenging under $15. A bottom shelf super budget bourbon shootout would be very entertaining. I've had a few that were surprisingly good for being so cheap. So many good picks at the $40-50 range, but the bottom shelf value bourbons are always overlooked.
Thanks for the recommendation! Interesting concept!
I agree. There are _soooo_ many options in the $50 range that a March Madness setup probably wouldn't get all of the options.
Really enjoy these videos, keep up the great content SLB.
I knew it was woodinville when I saw the shape of the mystery bottle. Haven’t tried it yet but I have a bottle.
Same! I just got a store pick at my local liquor store, so the bottle was very fresh in my brain. It’s really nice! Not my favorite, but definitely solid.
Woodinville makes a good rye
Wish I could have seen the mystery pic before tasting lol!
@@slbdrinks hahaha! That would have been too easy :P
I'm a big fan of the Woodinville. I used to live in Washington State and sadly never made it to their brewery.
Haven't tried the Wilderness Trail yet, I need to remedy that.
Been a minute since I enjoyed a pour of Woodenville but wow did well in this blind!
Old Elk Barrel pick sounds awesome !!!
Love these blind reviews/tastings. I host these at my house from time to time.
You finally guessed what you were drinking and you nailed it! I love when you guess what your drinking, please do this more!!
Will do!
Its 90 proof but the private select at 120 plus proof is delicious
Haven’t seen one of those yet but hopefully soon!
Love Woodinville. Bought it in WA. Paid 42 bux, after tax was 53... would buy it again. Want the Port finished, glad you mentioned that one.... good line up. Interesting on the Castle and Key, heard nothing but good things... but you have heard mixed... interesting. Not on my list, so don't have to worry about it...
Wasn’t my favorite John but for some it’s great. Adhd whiskey channel was not a big fan either. To each his own.
These are a lot of fun to watch!
Good choice; I absolutely agree.
Not shocking to me, love Woodenville, the 100% Rye is Sour Green Apples like a Jolly Rancher for days. Love the Port Finish a ton and the Bourbon is one of the best for the Money. Don't get me started on Picks.... Incredible what they are doing. Shhhhh dont' tell anyone....
I have the bourbon and the port finish and like both! Would love to try some picks!
Love the blinds! Thank you for your content. Love the unbiased approach!
Thank you!
I think I like these best! Fun to watch - thanks
Love the blinds! Good video guys!
I can’t get any of those here. Good show all the same though.
Woodinville is a $40 bottle here. It's definitely a fun little distillery to visit. You should definitely try their barrel aged maple syrup.
Oooh that sounds good lol
I just picked up the last available Woodinville bourbon at my local store! Very nice. Mine was the single barrel store pick and it's a bit hotter than my pallet is ready for. But flavors are nice.
Woodinville is so good. Especially if you can get a store pick full proof! Same with wilderness trail store picks!
I need to find a store pick at some pick!
I for sure want in on that barrel pick. I actually just bought a bottle of the Old Elk 4 Grain yesterday at my local retailer.
Do you ever test small, regional distilleries. We have a few good ones in the Midwest - Few and Koval distilleries, both in Chicago; Whiskey Acres in DeKalb, IL; Blum Bros. In Galena, IL and Journeymen in Three Oaks,MI. Some are better than others but I’d be interested in your take.
Love to try as many as I can! At this point I have only tried and visited Journeyman on your list.
Excellent show!!
I’ve had a Woodenville Barrel Proof store pick that was awesome!
Mmmmm would love a barrel proof!
Agree! I have the r/bourbon pick SiB barrel proof and it's one of my fav bottles.
I live less than a mile from WWC. There Islay cask finish is my favorite. Their Rye and cask strength offerings are great as well. Nice.
Wow those sound fantastic!
Another great video. I have not had or heard of any of these, but will definitely pickup the winner as I usually agree with Kurt.
May I suggest either a blind taste test of Bottled In Bonds or your top 5 BIBs?
I hear you Don and we will def do this soon. I know you have asked several times so we owe you that!
@@slbdrinks thanks and sorry to be a pain. Lol
Happy National Bourbon Day!
Never a pain buddy!
Great show thank you Kurt and Trenton woodenville port finish is great definitely recommend it’s been easy to get in Florida a must try!!!!
It is a great bottle!
Enjoy the blind tastings. I agree with you on Woodinville but then I am from WA state. But lately I have been picking up the Bib & Tucker bottle more often.
I like those also! 6 yr is a pretty good bottle for the money.
Congratulations Kurt, envious as he'll!!
Love this! I'm a huge fan of Wilderness Trail and some of the bourbons they're putting out. Good job guys (and gals)!
Excellent whiskey!
Interesting and definitely fun as usual.
Excited for you guys!!!!!
I live less than a mile from the Woodinville distillery and I haven’t gone down to taste. I frequent the restaurant there but haven’t done the distillery. Shame. Maybe shall do it next weekend, Father’s Day weekend.
Yes! Plz let me know what you think.
Love the challenges. 👍🥃
Great video! I have learned a lot about whiskey 🥃
Thank you!
I'm not sure if you have had any Smooth Ambler Products but I really feel they are a Up and Coming Distillery. They are from West Virginia and source from MPG along with mixing a few others in plus there own whiskey. Check them out....Old Scout is about a $29 dollar bottle and in my opinion would give a run to any bottle in that price range. The Contradiction is about a $45 dollar bottle that to me is one of the best in it's price range and maybe even take on more expensive bottles too. As of today they were named "Breakout Distiller of the Year" at the 2022 ASCOT Awards !!!
Really?? That’s a big deal! I don’t have any of their releases so sounds like that needs to change!
Love all your videos Kurt. Makes my week.
Thanks so much! You are just as important to us!
Great video guys!
Would really like it if Trent got more comfortable in front of the camera over the next year. With these bottle guesses be good to see you both part of Matt Maddness.
😳 That’s a tough challenge! I was able to watch a bit of that and kudos to the ones who did well!
Same for Oregon
Castle and Key is just getting started and I think they'll eventually knock it out of the park. If you ever get a chance to visit you should. Gorgeous grounds and the staff love to talk to you once they figure out you know something about liquor. Their gins are *superb*
Do love the gin! I will def keep an eye on them!
I enjoyed both the Woodinville Straight Bourbon and the Port finish. Definitely not a wheater, though; it's 72% Corn, 22% Rye, and 6% Malted Barley.
I have both of those as well and like them both.
Looking forward to your barrel Pick of Ol;d Elk. I'm a big fan of the brand, and i'm interested in what your own barrel will be like (yes, i'm aware that you're not getting the whole barrel).
Can’t wait to hit the tasting! Hoping we have a say in the proof point.
KURT!!! This was awesome!!! I would love to do a blind tasting!!! CHEERS!!
Tim, it’s fun but a bit scary lol. If you ever get to my area let me know!
@@slbdrinks Will do!!!!
Like the video but (I know not intentional or no other motives) "best $50 bourbon" is a bit disingenuous. It was the best $50 for this comparo. I do like Woodinville. Very tasty. I wish the C&K was a little tastier. I have a bottle and I'm very emotionally tied to it since I cycled past the enigmatic C&K (formerly Old Taylor) ruins well before it was brought back to life. That said, I begrudgingly agree with you.
Agreed. I think what we should do is focus on 50.00 bourbon for blind tastings for several shows than have a final show blind tasting all the winners.
Having had all 4 myself, my ranking would be:
1) Kentucky Spirit
2) Woodinville
3) Wilderness Trail
4) Castle & Key
But I would only buy 1 & 2 again.
Agreed on all!
Every Old Elk barrel pick I've tried has been awesome - have fun with that!
I just bought my first Old Elk Barrel Pick a couple of weeks ago. I certainly enjoy their standard offering and am looking forward to this store pick.
Congratulation, first pick barrel!!
This was Great! Thank-you Guys. Beretta9MMUSA Sr.
I'm new to bourbon exploration. As a suggestion maybe in the future we can see the front of each bottle once they are announced.
Woodinville?!!!! Wow
That’s what I said!
I bought Woodinville just out of curiosity, and it was surprisingly good, but different. Wilderness Trail and Castle nKey just seem not quite ready for consumption.
I do enjoy Woodinville but it had been a good bit since I had a pour.
@@slbdrinks It is relatively new here in Nashville, about a year ish now..
I wish Woddinville existed in NE TN
No doubt! Washington is a long ways away for a visit.
If you visit the Wilderness Trail distillery gift shop, you can purchase a 375ml bottle of their rum if you want more WT funky.
Thanks!
I kind of agree with your assessment of the Kentucky Spirit in the blind anyway. I found it to be okay but not great. I realize it's a single barrel, but I definitely wouldn't buy it again.
I do enjoy it but def does not stand out in a pack of good bourbons.
Old Elk should not disappoint... Love me some Old Elk.
TWO NEW NOTES....."Pungent" and "Funky". LOLOL. First I get but I'm still working on "Funky"
Lol!
heyo, Old Elk is in my backyard! sure it'll be a great barrel pick
Awesome! Really looking forward to it!
Congrats!
Thanks Debby!
Blind tasting is always risky (but rewarding!) More so when being filmed I guess.
one suggestion though would be to "letter" the choices, rather than Number 1 being number four, A is number four?
Thanks for the recommendation.
could you make play lists of like whiskey war, barrel strength, and ect.
Great blind. Surprised you didn't find the turkey!
Me to! Especially since we just had the WT video. Bummer
I've seen Woodinville on the shelves for quite some time and even read some good things about it. But I just keep passing it up for some reason and buying something else. It's just one of those brands that doesn't click with me personally. Here is more support that is worth a try.......maybe soon.
Let me know what you think if you end up trying it.
I'm surprised Kurt doesn't need a palate cleanser between sips. Both gents are great at identifying some of these distillers. I'm happy Glass #3 tastes like OWA according to Trent. I can actually get that Bourbon at retail. OWA is unobtainium at retail. Glass #1 Is it Batch #1 or Batch #2?
Batch 2 to be exact. Dean, I have tried many ways when blind tasting. Water, no water, other, what works for me mostly is nothing in between sips. I know that may not be best for everyone but it works best for me. Appreciate you!
Woodinville makes a Bourbon finished with Washington apple crate staves that’s amazing! They make it exclusively for a local restaurant, I’ll have to see if I can’t manage to get a sample somehow for ya.
Every once in a while they will have that at the distillery only. When they do it's an instant road trip to grab a couple.
Wow that sounds fantastic!
Yeah, I've had the apple stave one. It is fantastic, like drinking bourbon while picnicking in the middle of an apple orchard.
I believe Woodinville is a rye mash bill. Just don't want those Weller chasers buying it all up. 😜
No, shhhhhh! Lol
@@slbdrinks 😜😜😜😜
Love this!!!
Please check out Distillery 291 while you’re in Colorado if you can and feel so inclined! I would love to hear your thoughts on their stuff!
Hope to have time to do that!
Try Milam & Greene SB next to 107. You’ll be shocked
I hope to run into you guys!
Me to!
Kurt my favorite CZcams bartender..I live in Wisconsin and cannot find OLD 55 single barrel
Much appreciated! It’s an Indiana based distillery but so good if you can find it!
@@slbdrinks I found some but have to drive to Illinois to get it😞
Now let’s compare the 50 dollar 1 and 2 to the 30 dollar 1 and 2 and see which wins
Heck ya good idea!
I have the castle and key batch 2. I need to go back and taste. lots of pepper but don't remember the funk.
Probably did not convey my thoughts properly on this one. It’s heavy grainy to me. Sweet up front but not my thing past that. This is def a bourbon some will like and others won’t. Glad you like it!
@@slbdrinks I could be wrong. Kinda new to the bourbon scene and learning my palette.Really enjoy your videos. Thanks
Follow your own palate my friend. We will never always agree.
Interesting, but the problem with tastings like these is that NONE of these are available in my area. It's frustrating to see and learn about bourbons that you will probably never be able to taste without a special trip.
I feel for you, honestly. I wish everyone had the same opportunities. Once you have the opportunity than you are free to make a choice.
Woodinville store picks are outstanding. The cask strength enhances the flavors more over the 90 proof.
Trenton- “I hope this doesn’t come around to bite me in the ‘you know what’ .. butt “8:46
Which Wilderness Trail was in the test? I have the Small Batch and the Wheated Single Barrell. While I tend to like wheated bourbon this single barrel tastes terrible to me. The Small Batch is fine. Maybe just an off barrel. I also recently got an off barrel from Four Roses. Very disappointed.
It would have been the small batch bourbon.
Ive never subscribed to a Patreon but Kurt I want that Barrel Pick haha so I did it only for you! Great Video as always
Thanks buddy!
It’s a shame the Castle and Key isn’t better. I have the batch 2 bottle. It’s drinkable on ice. The bottle is beautiful though!
Very nice looking! I have the same batch as you. I will try it in ice soon also! Thanks buddy!
I love, love, love that you don't seem to give a hair if snots think you look foolish. You do you, man. That is all we are doing!
You know it!
This is a very clear example of how not one bourbon will ever be the best they are all very similar that just pick one brand and let that be it instead of spending all of hard earned money
Castle and Key is my least favorite bottle. I like the Rye though.
Need to try the rye.
Is the name SLB in any way inspired by SL Benfica?
No it isn’t. SLB stands for strong like bull which is an ode to my mother. If you have a chance watch the bar tour video where I go into more detail about the name.
You guys coming to Colorado ?? 😃Sweet I live in Colorado Colorado native here.
Yes! Heading out tomorrow and will be at Old Elk Friday!
@@slbdrinks sweet ya that's up in Ft.Collins 👍🏻
I do a double blind whiskey night once a month with 12 bottles and I've found a few patterns like most men are to prestige brand focused, overly emotional, too judgmental, and not opened minded enough.
You are exactly right! It’s amazing to me how the opinions change when knowing the bottle and when it’s blind.
Do you folks have an extra bedroom down in that basement? ...just curious....
The hoarse “I like it” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dear SLB, please buy more glencairn glasses so you don’t have to share.
We have plenty. Trent is my son so doesn’t seem awkward to us.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! First human in!!!
You did it! Congrats!
I don't understand: So, the Wild Turkey here is a "Spirit", not a Bourbon? Has it not been aged long enough, or why is that? Because in Scotch whisky, anything under the magical "3 years" is called a spirit.
It's just the name of the expression. "Kentucky Spirit."
Np Thomas, it’s the name Wild Turkey gives this specific release. Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit. I probably was not clear on that during the video.
Which Woodinville was the winner as they have a few? you didn't see the bottle?
Straight Bourbon 90 proof
@@2is1acuity Thank you - Enjoy!
Correct, their straight bourbon. Good bottle!
