Each of the composers whose works comprise this album were associated with the French court in the 17th and 18th centuries, active during the reigns of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI. A number of the pieces have not, to the best of Tharaud’s knowledge, previously been recorded on the modern piano.
The album also features collaborations with soprano Sabine Devieilhe and pianist Justin Taylor.

Royer is such an underated composer! He is such a genius composer to create this masterpiece!
I am so happy that somebody finally explores the keyboard music of the French baroque! There are masterpieces to discover that are are melodious, rich and intricate - to rival anything of greats like Bach, Händel or Scarlatti. Exquisite playing by Tharaud as always! Certainly a recording I´ll see under my Christmas tree !!!
Agreed. The main reason we hear too few of them relative to the quality of their output is that we tend to focus on composers who were influential in the establishment of the modern classical music canon, which is heavily focused on Germany, especially because everything after Beethoven is traceable back to Beethoven and Beethoven just happened not to be influenced by French baroque composers while he did a lot of in-depth analysis of Bach and of Fux' 'Gradus ad Parnassum'. Even the French composers after him, from Saint-Saëns to Massenet, were more influenced by Beethoven than by their own compatriots, until the rise of the likes of Ravel and the Group des Six, who heavily drew from Baroque influences and were fond of French Baroque composers. Even some highly innovative contemporaries of Beethoven like Étienne-Nicolas Méhul were overlooked by their later compatriots.
In reality, the quality of work of the likes of Rameau and Couperin was such, that the French could have easily developed a Classical and Romantic tradition out of their work on their own without Bach, in the hypothetical scenario that the present German music tradition hadn't become dominant in all of Western art music.

C'est sublime comme toujours avec Alexandre Tharaud. Sortir aussi merveilleusement du clavecin pour l'amener au piano cette pièce du compositeur toujours méconnu Pancrace Royer, ou les Ombres errantes de Couperin, n'est donné qu'à cet incroyable et touchant pianiste. Merci pour ce moment suspendu.

Magnifique! Moi qui ne suis pas un inconditionnel des interprétations de M. THARAUD, je trouve qu'il fait ici preuve d'audace, de justesse et de grande sensibilité. Un lyrisme nouveau qui ne bouscule en rien l'austère beauté de ces oeuvres.

Sounds a century or two before its time. Could have been by Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, or Rachmaninoff.

@@dgionescu In playing ornaments in for example the Music of J.S. Bach it is not easy to play all required ornaments. You have to take into account when you play the ornaments they must sound delicately played. That requires a lot of practice and strong fingers that can work quite independently from each other. And playing more in tempo makes it even harder to play the ornaments well.
J'écoute beaucoup de Couperin et autres Rameau. Le piano est très bien mais seul le clavecin rends vraiment justice à cette musique car elle est écrite pour lui.
