- Don't get me wrong.... Great mic, but I do believe that high pass makes the e100sx super close to it. And the e40 is a looker and sounds good for a hundo.

The e40 with the foam screen changed the sound profile to match the SX
I think every Cad you’ve put on the channel has been so good for your voice similar to how they are for Mike Delgadios.
They’re just made for deeper voices and it makes them sound so smooth and full of character that I can see why they are a classic for VoiceOver. I’m not sure how they would be for singing but if I ever started to do VoiceOver they would be my first choice.

The SX sounds like its got a blanket over it to me. While the bottom end is a bit more hyped, the top end is significantly more muted. That being said... the real question is how well does it take EQ? If you start shelving the high end up, does that clarity come back into the picture or is it just not picking those frequencies up to begin with? I usually like darker mics, but in this case, i kind of like the S a little better.
If I had to replace the KB with a new mic right now I would seriously consider the e40. Looks like a great budget buy.
I feel like the 100SX is good but I'd really have to look at other mics in that price category. As far as the S goes... I completely agree with you on that.
To my ears, the SX has achieved that creamy broadcast quality, which I personally like in a voiceover mic. The e40 is a nice buy, but for that money, I think I would lean toward either a Neat Worker Bee (currently on sale for a crazy good price), an sE X1A, or spend a couple more coins and go with the CAD e50. The e40 does not quite have the fullness of the S and I am hearing some additional sibilance in comparison. Not a huge difference, but I hear it. Considering what CAD has available, I agree, I think they can send the S to the CAD mic retirement home with a good pension.

I had the E100SX and thought it sounded much more wooly. But...............I never thought about enabling the high-pass filter. That very well could make it sound much better or much closer to the E100s. In any and all cases I agree with you 100%. The E100s is in a tough spot for recommendations. It has quality control issues with hiss that even their own engineers can't seem to detect (even thought it's there). They also are quite expensive at $499 these days. If you can find one for $299 again, by golly get it. CAD E40 I haven't tested but maybe I should :P
Will say.... If you've tried a lewitt lct240... No need to go e40

I am hoping I will not see these issues and get to enjoy a modern classic.

Pretty good discussion point Bark, but it also begs the question on whether or not the E50, which still exists, also has any value in this CAD mic discussion. I actually wanna see a quick shootout between the e40 and the e50, especially considering how they're similarly priced, and how good the e40 is for the price.
I have a hard time with the e50 due to it being a mic that is also rebadged as the H&A LDCM

A little warmer? The Aston Element thinks the E100sx might be a little bassy. The E100s sounds best, but not $200 better than the E40.

What does the E40's board look like compared to the E100S's? If someone gave me an E40 for free, I would not be able to restrain myself from upgrading the capsule to the one in the E100s for $12.50!
Sound wise the E100s and the E40 were nearly twins, and your homemade one (didn't you have it in the little red rectangular body for a while?) sounds an awful lot like the E100SX. Like a lot.

I don't think "discontinued" is the correct term. It was replaced with a new version. The 100s, replaced the 100. I don't think anyone says the Shure sm7 was discontinued. It was replaced with a new version, the sm7A. Surely no one would say the sm7A was discontinued, would they? The current sm7B, is the exact same mic as the sm7A. All that changed between the two versions, was the addition of a bigger accessory windscreen. While the sm5 mic line, is no more. While the sm7 was a replacement to the sm5. The differences prompted a whole new product line.
I don't see either take as incorrect myself. You could say they do not continue to produce those mics and that would line up with the word discontinued. Meanwhile there are things like the heil pr30 and pr30b that are both still produced.

Hmm. I think it is the right term. The E100s is discontinued. As is the E100. You can't buy them on CAD's website. So that's that. They're not a direct replacement either. They sound nothing alike. And imo this is where CAD is dropping the ball and losing money. People want the E100s. It's gone. The E100sx isn't it. That's why they can't sell it and are doing garbage-bin discounts. No one wants it. They should just stuck with the E100s. But yeah it is discontinued.
The Sx is muddy as hell. I've got ribbons. Don't need a LDC that's voiced like a ribbon
