CAD E100SX Review (versus Vintage E-100)

  • Prior to starting this channel I was on the prowl for a microphone to use when I present my educational content here on Sound Speeds. I searched all over the internet because none of the microphones I owned would give me the sound I was looking for. When I came across Mike DelGaudio's video "Can A Mic Last Forever" ( • Can a mic last forever... ), I was very confident I would like the Vintage Equitek E-100 on my voice.
    The CAD Equitek E-100 was originally released in 1992, replaced by the E-100-2 in 2003 and then replaced by the E-100S in 2007 before being discontinued in 2020. In early 2022 CAD announced the CAD Equitek E-100SX at a price point only 60% of the E-100S.
    To purchase an Equitek E-100SX: geni.us/CADE100SX
    The vintage E-100 is still a hot commodity in the used market but with a $300 price point, the appeal to purchase a brand new microphone with a 2 year warranty may be more appealing that taking your chances with a microphone that's upto 30 years old. In this video I'm going to discuss the E-100 Equitek line and compare the vintage E-100 to the E-100SX.
    Full Disclosure:
    CAD did send me the E-100SX in exchange for a fair and honest review. I do get to keep it following this review but I'm not going to allow that to affect my opinion. CAD had no input in this review and did not get to see it prior to launch.

      Mike is how I found the Cad E100 vintage also. Back when you could get them for $150 easily, I believe I got mine for $125-140. They weren't selling then Mike's video caused a resurgence and you couldn't find them anywhere and when you could, they sold for as much as, if not more than, the E100S.

      They really are great! A very natural and detailed sound. I wish they were never discontinued but when the E100-II replaced it, it was because manufacturing moves international. :-(

    I really enjoyed this comparison. I have always wanted to hear my own voice recorded with an E100 after first hearing Delgaudio praise it.
    Now that I’ve also seen your review, maybe I’ll give the SX a shot and see what I think (I will rent it to try one out if that is an option.) Thanks!

  • @AndyGregor
    @AndyGregor Před 2 lety +1

    Great comparison Allen, at distance I liked the SX it sounded a bit "more" in the lower end which I think suited your voice. Then when you switched to the E-100 the clarity seemed better, which was more pleasing to my ear. Tough to choose, but I think the clarity wins for me. Thanks for doing this🙂

    Amazing. I heard and immediate difference between the E100S and the SX in Mike's review video. In yours, I'm hearing very little discernible difference between the E100 and SX. I think I'm listening with the same output, my 16" M1 MBPro speakers. In Mike's video, I was clear I didn't like the new mic. In your's, I don't hear any problem at all, especially at 6"-9". Maybe it's how they pair with your voice. IDK. Thanks for the review!

    • @SoundSpeeds
      @SoundSpeeds  Před 2 lety +4

      That's exactly it. Mike could talk into a toothbrush and it would sound amazing but I have a totally different voice. That's one reason why the E100S makes me sound bad.

  • @edwarddodge7937
    @edwarddodge7937 Před 4 měsíci +1

    Great review! I prefer the older version -- slightly! But not for $200-$400 more. And when I listen without watching the video graphics it's nearly impossible for me to tell which is which. Also with the new one being lighter, with no batteries, and less power hungry, it's a no-contest .

  • @odiumpugnator472
    @odiumpugnator472 Před rokem +2

    Thanks for the review video.
    I had and used the E100S. I did voice overs with that mic. It was a fantastic sounding mic for its relatively low cost. I used a flexible mesh Shure pop filter in front of it and it was excellent.
    In this review I have a preference for the E100 over the E100SX. The SX does have more quiet studio quality. If one wants that type of sound the SX sounds very nice. For me, the SX sounds too flat. Comparing it to flavor and taste, the SX is bland, which some people like. The E100 is more seasoned in flavor, more interesting, and has a more live quality. If one prefers that, then the E100 is the choice.
    However, as the E100 is not longer being made, and we can't purchase a new one, the SX is great microphone that will simply need some seasoning added with a bit of EQ tweak, which is easy to do. The E100S that I had sounded more like the E100, with the quieter noise floor of the SX. Given the growing popularity of previous CAD E100 series mics, it seems the company may be missing out on a positive financial opportunity. They have their original schematics and build specs of all of the previous E100 versions. They should start making new E100 mics, and even the E100S. Last thing, my E100S came in a very nice cherry stained wood box. That was a very lux bonus item. It gave the low cost mic a quality that belied its price point. Given that it has been a long time since the original E100, and less so with the E100S, even a modest price increase would not be objectionable, as long as it is modest, inline with direct competitors like Rode and it's NT1 and NT1-A

    Great Video! I listened on my iPhone 11 without headphones. In my opinion the E100 had a clearer sound with more of a presence boost. The E100SX sounded smoother. I knew immediately which was which. Years ago I purchased a vintage E100 but I was unfamiliar with the battery situation. I messed it up somehow changing the battery and adding phantom power. It no longer works. I WOULD like to have it repaired. But im watching your review because TODAY ONLY B&H has a sale on the whole CAD package for $149.00!!!!

      That's a good deal. My E100 started getting temperamental just before this review but settled down again for a time so I quickly shot this video. Right after, it tanked for good. I suspect it's a discharged backplate since it's an electret condenser.

    Is there going to the same preamp, there is no way the newer model has a noise floor of 9. The type of noise I'm hearing is usually reminiscent of 18 - 22 soft noise Karma compared to the E100 we're very little White Noise can be heard.
