It may have to do with seating efficiency. The faster they can seat passengers, which is usually the longest holdup for a plane to depart, the faster they can turn planes around. A few minutes saved can add up significantly, allowing them to add more flights to the schedule, generating more revenue.

Seating on southwest is the most annoying part of the flight. It's the reason I much prefer any other premium airline.
