It very much looks like an English helmet mixed with an Italian helmet. A much deeper bowl, but the rim is flat; unlike the American M1 or especially the German Stahlhelm 1935.
It does what it's supposed to do, just like it's cousins all over the world: protect the fighting man from shrapnel, that's it. Particularly falling debris from HE shell detonations. If it stopped a bullet, you got LUCKY and it more than likely came in from a shallow angle and just zinged your dome. Great video Han! This was a first for me. It's a smart design and no frills, both are pluses indeed👍👍👍
Thank you for your outstanding demonstration as to how the Type 90 Army helmet is worn in addition to the field cap. Now I understand why the fabric chin straps have extended length.

In my opinion, the Navy made their method neater than that of the Army to send a message that the Navy branch is the better choice/option to serve than the Army branch
Japanese military uniforms are much better than Soviet military uniforms
Not surprising given the hostility between the two
Well it’s more so about Army and Navy officers having different ideas on how equipment should be employed. But the Navy also tied it under the chin like the Army when wearing gas masks or when the straps were later shortened to save material during the war.
@@hattorihan7503 Which method in your opinion is more effective? Personally, I think its the Navy's way of doing it. It seems to secure the helmet even better and is neat on top of that.
@@somerandofilipino6957 The navy method can definitely be a bit more secure but I prefer utilizing the army method since its much quicker to put on and remove, especially in stressful situations.

I have always wondered how the heck these straps work. While I am not really a collector of Japanese WW2 militaria, focusing on US- I have always found Imperial Japanese stuff to be a interesting mix of new, old and traditional. .

Cool repro from Nakata Shoten. I have some of his books when he made them for his museum, very interesting material. Is his store still open, and how did you get the helmet (which from my information the store is only in Japan)?
Nakata Shoten mostly stopped producing most of their historical line up after Nakata Sr. died and his son took over. Helmet was bought second hand.

Adds an extra layer of padding. Cap was also designed to fit comfortably under the helmet to solve the issue of having to store it somewhere when wearing a helmet.

I always find the Japanese equipment so interesting, it seems more complexed than other countries equipment like American equipment but is cheaper to produce. Americans using gators for the feet and the Japanese using putty’s. Rather than a standard buckle they use ties for the helmet

I'm 100% white and there is absolutely zero chance I'll be able to (respectfully) use this in a reenacting capacity, but as an anthropologist studying the subject living history specialists are vital to our understanding of military culture as they understand history on an experiential level that cannot realistically be conveyed by history books. Keep up the good work! It is valuable to the social sciences!
Ethnicy its not a problem when It comes to reenacting. And even when we think of "accuracy", some europeans fought in the IJA, specially russians from the White Army

I have a type 99 helmet with postwar OD webbing added that I received from "Collectors Armory" as a kid in the early 1980s.. Still have it to this day..

The Imperial Navy tied their straps different because they didn't get along with the Imperial Army.
Question is there any evidence of Japanese soldiers using foreign helmets or captured ones in a similar fashion to the Chinese forces of the time?
None, you would however in early pictures see a handful of experimental helmets in and around the early 30s.
I have not seen evidence of it so far.

Question- would japanese also camo pattern paint their helmets sometimes like the germans? Or at least having multi color camo over caps? As I can see the netting on the army helmet having camo simmlar to japanese tank camo and i remember that some special units had camoflaged uniforms like Giretsu Kuteitai but Idk if they had helmets and caps in the same style or was it just the uniforms.

What was the helmet made of was it hard steel of good quality?
Japanese Type 90 helmets were made with inferior chrome-molybdenum steel. They were thin and only offered minimal protection.

There must be some reasonable reason, or is it just a matter of antagonism between the army and navy?
I’m not sure, but I can imagine the army’s method is better for quick wear, and the Navy usually has more time before combat.

That is, there is no fundamental difference between them.
In addition, in the navy you also need to quickly put on a helmet, for example during a surprise air attack.
So the difference in tying knots is unlikely to depend on speed.
It seems to me that the main reason here is the antagonism between the army and navy.
@@user-if9hg6xf2v At 4:28 I explained why the Navy did this. Its definitely not from antagonism between army and navy, its just both can have different schools of thought on how each piece of equipment should be worn or used.
My friend, i have always wondered, as the japanese helmet shell looks nearly identical to the swedish helmets of about 1922 onward, did they share a link somehow, ir is it a weird coincidence??? Thanks, i trust your opinion!!!
They tested many foreign helmets and the Swedish helmet was one of them so it is possible that it may have some influence in the shape.

Han did explain that the Navy tying method secures the helmet more when looking downwards.
As of why the difference of choices, I’m not sure.
Maybe the soldiers of the army typically have more urgency to put their helmets on, whereas the navy are typically have more time?

Depends on the size of your head. It can be comfy or too tight

Yes, most of the Koreans serving in the IJA were war criminals. Also, all the Koreans who served in the Vietnamese War were also war criminals. You must be very proud.
