    I will add this: Garmadon Rulez! (Still unreleased in English) fleshed out some of Harumi's details and motivations more. As taken from the wiki:
    -Harumi feeding the poor was just a ruse to get Lloyd to like her.
    -It is confirmed that Harumi turning evil is the result of both the loss of her birth parents and the poor treatment and very strict education she received from the Emperor and Empress.
    -She never saw the Emperor and Empress as her parents and did not think they actually cared for her.
    -Hutchins appeared to be more aware of Harumi's problems than the Emperor and Empress and attempted to help Harumi by telling her to write about her feelings.
    -Hutchins sang Spider's in the House to her when she couldn't sleep. She thought that the song was creepy, but later used it as inspiration to fulfill her goals.
    -Harumi idolized Garmadon and despised the Ninja immediately after the events of her flashback to the death of her parents.
    -Harumi wished that Garmadon adopted her instead.
    -After Garmadon was purged of his evil, she lost respect for him after watching as he bowed before the Emperor and was pardoned in a public ceremony. She abandoned her fanaticism toward him for the years between Legacy of the Green Ninja and the end of Possession, and considered him weak, stating that it would have been better if he had died instead.
    -At some point, she found a way to sneak out of the palace through the garden, and gained her casual disguise.
    -Her obsession with Garmadon was reignited when she was attracted to the Oni Mask of Deception, and heard Garmadon's voice calling her in a similar way as he would be heard from the Departed Realm later in "Dread on Arrival."
    -Mystake showed Harumi the tale of the Oni and Dragon with the same tea used to show Jay and Lloyd later.
    -She got Hutchins to take her to the Library of Domu under the guise that she simply wanted to study Ninjago history, where she read about the Oni Masks and the resurrection ritual that could summon Oni from the Departed Realm. From there, she got the idea to form the Sons of Garmadon, and bring the Garmadon she idolized back.
    -The hair of an Oni's son, brother, and wife is required for the resurrection ritual.
    -Killow was the first member Harumi recruited.
    -Harumi is not aware of Mr. E's origins, or what "E" stands for. He was recruited by Killow.
    -Killow is afraid of rabbits, and suggested they be used as the Sons of Garmadon's symbol before the current one was chosen.
    -Harumi's planning began after Garmadon's death in Possession, and the other members of the gang were recruited between The Hands of Time and Sons of Garmadon.

  • @theAstarrr
    @theAstarrr Před rokem +110

    I think the worst part of the scene is that they showed us she was evil before Lloyd found out.
    Imagine if we found out simultaneously to Lloyd - we never see any evidence that she is evil until she says that one line about only someone with Oni blood can remove the mask.
    That would have made the scene legendary. We would feel tricked along with Lloyd.

    • @bendobricks
      @bendobricks  Před rokem +51

      I used to think the same thing but upon reflection I realized that if we didn’t already know Harumi was the quiet one the flashback would not have fit in very naturally and the buildup of seeing Harumis evil actions towards Lloyd wouldn’t exist. Overall I think having harumis identity revealed in the episode prior was a good call even if I’m not incredibly impressed with the execution.

    • @Crusty783
      @Crusty783 Před rokem +28

      I strongly disagree. The reveal in the previous episode allows for the buildup of tension we saw in this episode. If we didn't know going in, the episode owuld not have been NEARLY as good

    • @theAstarrr
      @theAstarrr Před rokem +13

      You (both) make good points - although personally, I think if they added little touches that viewers could catch (like the stuff in the cave but less obvious), and then opened with the flashback next episode and then cut to a hardened Harumi having almost achieved her goal, it would work well story wise.
      But it does lower the tension, you are right.

    I actually really like the scene where both the Ninja and the Sons of Garmadon (Kinda) work together to bring the monster down. If you dig deeper into the meaning of this whole “sort of pointless scene”, you’d realize that this was presenting that the ninja and the Sons of Garmadon might be different in many ways, but the thing they have in common is that they are All fighting for what they truly believe is right. They all want Ninjago to be protected, but as in how it should be protected is what they disagree on. The Ninja believe they can protect Ninjago, but from the Sons of Garmadon’s point of view, they believe Garmadon’s power can protect them from future threats.
    But sadly the truth is that neither side was able to protect Ninjago. The Sons of Garmadon got too caught up in power and dictatorship (Also, a lot of them are scumbags), and became what they were originally against. As for the ninja, sure-they’ve been able to protect some of Ninjago from the future conflicts, but the truth is, that a LOT of people still get hurt and even get killed by the attacks. And we see the realization of this in Crystalized from the Mayor, some citizens, and government of Ninjago-as they say that the Ninja weren’t able to protect a lot of them from a lot of stuff. (Like the Oni, the Flood of Wojira, and a LOT of other stuff.)
    Now, I’m not saying that what the ninja are doing for Ninjago is wrong;on the contrary I believe that what they’re doing is probably all that any of Ninjago can do for their world. Basically what I’m saying is that all the attacks that happen to Ninjago just can’t be helped sometimes. (Like how no one can control a tornado from destroying a house) All they can do is fight and try to save who they can. Like they tell us in the show-Ninjago is built on a balance of good and evil, and until the show proves otherwise-Ninjago is always going to have conflicts and people are going to always get hurt.
    Sorry that this is WAYYYYYY too long! 😅

      @@theghostwiththemost789 Wow, that's a lot of details, thank you! It's so rare to hear the perspective of someone watching the show blind years after the seasons originally aired.
      It also sounds like many of her opinions and most emotional moments fall in line with the opinions and emotional moments of most other Ninjago fans. Zane's death? Classic. Loved Skybound's ending? Controversial but some people still love it! Hunted as her favorite? That's one of the most popular choices! Surprised that Harumi was the Quiet One? I don't blame her, most Ninjago fans were equally caught off guard (as much as they try to claim otherwise!)
      That's interesting and it's evidence of NInjago not just being a product for its time, rather the the show impact people many years later the same way they impacted people when The Who originally came out. There is a timelessness to it, a layer of quality and intention that supersede time.

      That's how a lot of people felt about Harumi. The writer did a superb job of making Harumi really endearing and sympathetic, you were entirely on her side which is why it was so heartbreaking when it turned out she was so evil.
      The writers were actually extremely intelligent here, because they endeared Harumi to the viewer IRL in the same way they are endearing her to Lloyd in-universe. For lack of a better term, they were sort of making you fall in love with Harumi. I mean you weren't literally in love with her but you could clearly see why _Lloyd_ (the audience surrogate) was in love with her and it made you root for them.
      That's why Harumi's twist felt so devastating, _because it felt personal._ You were invested in Harumi the exact same way Lloyd was. When Harumi betrayed him, it didn't feel like she was just betraying him, it felt like she was betraying you, the audience. She had your sympathies, you trust, and you genuinely wanted her to feel safe and secure just like Lloyd did. It truly genius writing on the creators' parts, because it all comes down to being genuinely invested in Harumi's character. Even though she was fictional, the writers made her feel so real to the point where we had real emotions regarding her.
      Most tv shows and movies don't make you feel that invested in a character yet here was Ninjago accomplishing such a very difficult task. It think it's a testament to how good the writing is for Ninjago, particularly how good seasons 8 and 9 were specifically.

    • @bendobricks
      @bendobricks  Před rokem +10

    Most of the time i wish we had gotten more profound, serious matters like this continue in the latter seasons. Not saying they aren't deep or engaging it's just from my perspective they weren't oni trilogy level. And the cinematic approach was lacking which maybe is the cause for my preference in wilfilm.
    Some sequences like modified Lloyd's offcial debut in the mask of deception, Cole/Jay/Zane's origin flashbacks, Nya commanding the rain to control the crash, the mayhem in the palace of secrets under attack by sog, the ninja facing off against Garmadon's colossus, Harumi's reveal, Lloyd vs Garmadon in cryptarium, the last battle in green destiny, THE FIGHT WITH SAMURAI X IN THE RAIN(I frikkin love the rain aesthetic srsly strong suits for why s8 is in my top favorites)
    All these scenes were incredibly well executed cinematography-wise.

My brother kept bugging me about it too, I’ve just never been that interested in love interest in general but my brother had been kind of rubbing it in my face.
    I was so happy when Harumi was revealed to be the quiet one because my brother didn’t get to bother me anymore, and it made Harumi so much cooler. I’ve noticed that sometimes I get more attached to the villain than the hero, and that showed when I was accidentally rooting for the villains when Harumi was trying to resurrect Garmadon. I was actually disappointed when the ninja won that fight because I was so excited for Garmadon to return haha, I’m not sure what that says about me as a person but Harumi is definitely one of my favourite characters throughout the entire show.

Not even talking about the epic dialogue/fight between Lloyd and Harumi, my favorite part is the double-take on the flashback. Most of us watched season 1 when we were much younger, and if we stuck with the show until this point, than this episode serves a whole other purpose. "You weren't naive enough to think no one got hurt that day, did you?" YES!! As kids, that's exactly what we think when a monster attacks a city. But as you said, after Harumi's backstory we see the attack through the eyes of the citizens, through the casualties. And suddenly we aren't those naive children anymore. It's fricking EVERYTHING. 😭

    Harumi is the first and only villain to completely blame their evil intentions on the Ninja. After rewatching the entire show a few times, I especially took focus on the Ninjago City battles in the first seven seasons. The thought of how many lives were probably lost during battles with the Overlord, Chen, the Preeminent and the Time Twins/Vermillion truly is horrifying, and even more disturbing is the fact that the Ninja and their allies never thought about innocent casualties until the final battle of Season 9.

    Bit unrelated, My biggest problem with Sog is that, most of the season is in the jungle. I think it would been beter if hole season was in the city. Like i think the fight in the roof tops and drying racks is my favorite in all of ninjago, becase its creative, fun and uses the backdrob as an advange. If i made sog, i would make Mask of hatered be in a ancient Oni temple deeeeeeeeb below Ninjago city, and Ninja and Sog are racing to it, instead of the jungle part.

  • @lizbethespinoza9196
    @lizbethespinoza9196 Před 11 měsíci +1

    I'm sorry but I beg to differ. Harumi's background was very sad yeah whatever, but if it were really important, they would've done it more often. With allies who still admire the ninja regardless of the collateral damage their actions (of which they have no control of), morally grey and mistrusting side characters, even underground movements to end them. We never see why Kilo, ultraviolet, etc. Are evil we just have to accept it I guess.
    But I think that's just a part of a bigger issue. The season really doesn't give much attention to any other than Lloyd, and maybe some other times to the rest of the team. They don't have time to develop because they were being pushed to release more episodes.
    Now I think that with dragons rising this won't be the case (haven't watched it yet). But that's the main problem I find with the construction of the characters and arcs.
    But at the end of the day it's just a kids show, doesn't need to be as good as it was. (Not now at least because before background story and actually good characters were needed for the parents to let their kids watch any show. Nowadays are so dumb they don't even understand what the characters are saying and just want punching, flashy, colorful scenes) And I'm excited for new seasons to come! I want to see the new directions they're heading to. And I'm just gonna say it...
    Master Lloyd is kinda cute. Lol

Why wont Harumi just bring her parents back from the deed instead of Garmadon? and if the reason she,s so mad at Lloyd is cuz he didn,t save her parents, when she explains to Lloyd why she is so mad at him she dosn,t mention that its kinda all Lloyds fault. he let free the snake people who awakened the great divoverer but if she dosn,t know that then?
