  • In 2017, the #Berklee #Indian #Ensemble #presented a landmark collaborative concert with its fifth Artist in Residence, Indian playback singer Shreya Ghoshal. The Ensemble is delighted to share an excerpt from that evening: a reimagining of the 1962 classic, “#Aap #Ki #Nazron Ne Samjha”. Presented here with just four #musicians - Ms. #Ghoshal, lauto player Vasilis Kostas (Greece), violinist Layth Sidiq (Iraq/Jordan), and tabla player Giri #Subramaniam (India) - this simple but soulful interpretation was performed in tribute to one of India’s most iconic voices: Lata Mangeshkar.
About the Berklee Indian Ensemble: Founded in 2011 by faculty member Annette Philip, the Berklee Indian Ensemble is one of the largest and most diverse ensembles at Berklee. Apart from performing original compositions and arrangements, the Berklee Indian Ensemble tours internationally; presents a wide array of South Asian folk, classical, and contemporary music; and has collaborated with various world-renowned artists, garnering over 180 million views for their viral videos to date.

    Welcome to Hindustani classical music.
This form of performance is called a Jugalbandi where musicians play off each other and improvise as they go along.
It takes years of discipline and learning to master this art form, all mathematical notes etc. And done under d tutelage of a Guru or accomplished , teacher who guides and carries you through.
Requires immense dedication & discipline . Hats off to Shreya for mastering this art form. She is a legend.
And humility is at d core of this kind of art form.

Great recommendation by Mr. Nithin Sankar Ji.
"Muraliya" song is a Thumri with western Mix.
Thumri is a singing style of Indian classical music. There is predominance of Rasa (Love) and emotion. That is, in which the beauty of the emotion is considered more important than the purity of the raga. The reason for the lack of interest in this genre in the present time is the loss of interest in classical singing.

The stringed instrument is the Middle Eastern OUD - and it has 6-8 strings and it is predominant in the Middle East and it stretches into Turkey and Greece and all the way upto Bosnia, Serbia to the north and towards Morocco in North Africa. It is played with precision and it takes a lot of practice to get the sounds right! Western instrument closest to this is MANDOLIN!

Go for arijit's "tum hi ho" It's a song where of course you won't be understanding the lyrics but it'd hit you on another level even when you don't understand the lyrics. If it weren't for the language, arijit would be reigning at the top, i used to listen to english songs but stopped years ago since i started hearing him. They don't give you the feel what he does. In the industry too, the legends are not getting the current songs because he's there.

Its not a made up vocal tone like western style singer. This is her actual voice when she sings and when she talks. Its her own casual tone of voice. You are trying her voice impression, which is absolute feels like a hard effort of voice changing. She is not. She is not changing her voice at all. Its her actual speaking tone.
