And actually- it was the confederates who fired upon and seized federal lands. The federal government can not “invade” its own territory. The constitution is really clear on this- The federal government is REQUIRED to defend the union against all threats foreign and domestic. Number two- secession was predicated upon the idea that if you don’t LIKE a law that gets passed, if you don’t LIKE the outcome of an election, that its perfectly okay to simply decide you aren’t held by the rule of law.
That is philosophically imbecilic position. It makes Lawful government impossible. The rule of law is the rule of law and the South had EXACTlY the same rights as every other state. (The Declaration of Independence specifies that you can revolt if your government is NOT according you equal treatment of all other subjects... the south had no such complaint. )
Last of all- the South was making a self defeating argument. They were saying that the North had NO RIGHT to limit the rights of the Southern States... So that they could preserve Their right to limit the rights of slaves. Ergo- if the North had not right to preserve the union, then the South had no right to hold people as slaves. If They had the right to hold slaves, then governments DO have the right to limits the rights of the people. Period.
The South was stupid. And Slavery and Jim Crow actually Impoverished them. The South Still suffers endemic poverty because slave economies are aristocratic exconomies that only benefit 5% of the people who live in them.
They lost because wage paying economies out-produce slave economies ten to one.
The fact is that the war was predicated upon weak rationales by the ruling class of the South to try and preserve Their personal income streams, which depended on slave labor.
And it was fought by dirt poor farm boys who were fighting to be sure that there was at least one group of people who were lower than they were on the social totem pole.
There was NO grand argument- no noble struggle for Rights they happily denied a third of their population.
And if you don’t LIKE the Government of the people, by the people and for the people, you can pull up stakes and enjoy the wild freedom of Somalia.

If you had made it about the quotes AND their context, you would have needed to include Mal sitting naked on a rock in the middle of nowhere, opining, "Yep. That went well."
It did. They got the laser and left Christina Hendricks in a cargo container in the middle of the desert. Which doesn't sound all that good but murderous sociopath.

I believe that Alan Tudyk's career was made on the fact that he would look nowhere but straight into Mal's eyes and smile for that whole scene. I still laugh thinking about it.

Any time someone uses "interesting" for a comment or something, I always post that clip in response.

Apparently the 'faster would be better!' line was improvised by Fillion after Whedon told him to say 'something Mal would say'
#3 is a perfect example of what made this show great. Mal was so unequivocally human. He didn't always have a snappy comeback or a great one-liner. He got caught offguard, he got hurt, he was human, and that made the show great.
Interesting, the quote that really sticks with me (and which doesn't appear in this list) is Mal's reply to the Sheriff in The Train Job when the Sheriff says "When a man learns all the details of a situation like ours, well, then he has a choice". Mal's simple reply "I don't believe he does" is probably his most powerful line in the whole series for me. I still look out for it every time I re-watch the show. That scene is just flawlessly written and acted, and it's amazing how much they were able to say about Mal's character in so few words.

This may not merit addition to a 'best of' list, but I love what he says when he's about to fall asleep after the crew returns at the end of "Out of Gas". As he is about to drift off, he turns back and asks:
Mal: "You all gonna be here when I wake up?"
Shepherd - "We'll be here."
Mal: "Good... that's good."
That's the closest the character ever comes, to saying how much he cares about his crew. His actions show it, but he doesn't talk about it...
That was a great line
The story of the button on the bridge that they gave to Wheaton is special too.
If only Firefly was on Netflix. Joss Whedon is unequaled in his ability to write smart, realistic, and funny dialogue, and Nathan Fillion is the ultimate roguish suave man-child.
The annoying part is that Firefly WAS on Netflix until this May!

I think the one line I love most from Mal is the one from the movie Serenity: "Dear Buddha, please bring me a pony and a plastic rocket."
One of my favorites is after they've delivered the cattle, and River is interacting with them, and Mal comments about her finally paying attention to them. Then River goes off on that flighty, new-age line about the cows, and how when they were on the ship they forgot who they were, but now they remember and so she can see them. And Mal looks over at one of the others, and says something like "Should I be worried that that statement actually made sense to me?" xD Loved that line.
Such an excellent show. It did NOT deserve to be canceled in any regard.
It's crazy too because many media that followed it, used Firefly as inspiration. Firefly basically spawned the traditional space western genre. Star Wars: A New Hope has some of the same tropes, but I will always regard Firefly as the origin.

They tried to kill it from out the gate by giving it a bad time slot and airing the episodes out of order. Some big wig had a pickle up his butt about this show. And we're not talking a baby gherkin it was one of those giant gas station pickles.

Well, they CAN pick up a few years after the happening of Serenity. Would explain a bit older crew, and we'd get the end of the main story that was intended. Don't get me wrong, Serenity gave it a nice closure. But if they wanted to make more, they could. And 2018-2019 might be a good time for that. Certainly, the more they wait, the harder it gets. But to be honest, Firefly is a fond memory so nothing they make would make you feel the same as the original run. Even if it is better in quality and writing. Simply, those episodes stand on their own and in our minds they are somewhat sacred.
So they CAN make more and they CAN make it as good or even better - but the audience will never accept it on the level that the original run was. It has created a cult.

I always liked the scene in "War Stories" in which he tells Wash about wanting to sleep with Zoe.
You could tell he didn't mean it, he was just doing it to keep Wash conscious--and alive. Make no mistake, Mal was hurting too, but his concern was more for Wash than himself. I think that is what inspired such loyalty from the others--his loyalty to them.
Mal also had the experience during the war, he had been hardened by those events. Wash is no warrior but he becomes one when they launch their rescue.

I have a favorite. “I’m not leaving Serenity.” He once mentioned how some people get trapped in their worst moments and it and the following line shows how he hasn’t really left that valley in some ways. He really is still a Sargent, a man of honor in a den of thieves. I love out of gas and I love firefly. I love how the last we see of him he’s showing growth. Gaining faith in thing outside his ship being worth fighting and dying for. It’s a gorram shame we never got more but I can’t complain about what we got.

Not English nor German are my mother tongues, but I'd say that the German translation is a bit fallacious i.e. children/Kinder were mentioned specifically , and this nuance is lacking in the German translation.

Floral Bonnet is one of those scenes that you can rewatch 100 times per day and still laugh your ass out like it's the first time.

I remember seeing in a webcomic once where they theorized the problem was that Joss pitched the series to Fox wrong. He likely tried to sell them on the idea of a unique scifi setting and theme with relatable characters. And thus the show was cancelled before the paint on the set dried. Where as if he'd of pitched it to them as 'cowboys and hookers in space' we'd be looking at the forth spinoff by now.
FOX is really the Alliance. What they fail to understand is that they can't take the sky from us.

I frickin love this show. Its a shame it got cancelled too early. Nathan Fillion mourns its end till this day.

#2 is by far my favourite.....always get a little teary.
Matter of pure personal preference, but I'd've put #2 last, just because of how touching a scene it is.
I can understand the order because of how popular #1 is, but I'm with you I tear up every time I see that scene from #2.
The last quote should have been the whole monologue. Such a great piece of writing.
