- Finding BIG BASS in Indiana Ditches and Lakes
The day didn't go quite as I had planned it. Ended up fishing a small natural lake on a recommendation from a friend and it was loaded with hungry bass.

“Preached on Jonah and the whale and of course the whole time I was thinking about fishin” lol I love it! And love your intentionality to stop at church while traveling!
I have been fishing for over 70 years for largemouth and smallmouth bass stripers tarpon snook and redfish sea trout you name it I’ve done it all ,But nothing has given me more joy than to watch your TV videos and the simplicity and the simple fishing style that you have made it so much more enjoyable. I’m not in the famous names tournament fishing big bass boats that’s not Fishing you are the real true American fisherman Just keep doing what you’re doing
My wife was listening to you while I was watching your video. She laughed and said, Man he really gets excited when he get a fish!
That’s why I watch every video you put out! The best there is!!
I’m a Hoosier and this is the story I’m sticking with… Frogs don’t come out until twilight, and the fish in a small indiana lake, that gets fished regularly, know it. They were thinking something was sketchy about that plastic frog. All my best for the adventures you bring.
Northern Indiana native here. I've caught more bass on crankbaits than any other lure. When they're hitting the surface like you saw, I use floating jointed rapala or suspending jointed shadrap. I prefer the silver, gold, or green color patterns. I park my kayak on the edge of the lily pads, casting towards the center. Just caught a bunch of bass and a massive 11" black crappie yesterday at Chain O Lakes state park using this method. So many Indiana fisherman use jigs and weedless soft plastics because of the thick vegetation commonly found in our lakes (fertilizer runoff from farms). Crankbaits from a kayak offer a different presentation that I've found to be very successful.
John, I just this February got hurt on the oil rig I work on, a piece of drill pipe fell out of the Derrick on me and a friend and he did not survive, I broke 14 bones and barely lived. As I was recovering I told myself if I get better I would start fishing again and I found your videos and they have brought me so much joy and happiness. You are the reason I got back out there and started fishing again. It has brought me so much peace and content and I’m truly happy again. I’ll fish for anything but I enjoy bass fishing so much here in Oklahoma. We have some absolutely monster bass out here and going out and finding them is the best part of the adventure. Would love to fish with you sir. Love your videos man. God bless
wow man, glad your recovering
I love this spot!! Best place for big bowfin, bass, carp, occasional pike.
Great day at work! What a beautiful, peaceful pond full of nice bass! Doesn't get any better than that.
“Time to catch a ditch fish” 🤣 that needs to be a T-shirt or something.
What a beautiful place to fish. The 5 pounder was nice. Glad you had a great time in Michigan.
Glad to see you getting some nice fish in my home state. Most of the lakes in northern Indiana are natural lakes formed by glaciers. Love your vids. God bless.
John glad to see you fishing in Indiana again! Hope you got the shirts and jackets from our bass club and hopefully see you , when you come back here ! May GOD Bless and Keep you !
That one that came back for it might've been a different one! That happened to me yesterday. I had a fish, and then it got me stuck in a tree. I went over to get it out, it came off, my lure shot out of the tree and a big one grabbed it. It was awesome. 19.50
I love small ponds and love days like this that you had. Awesome John! Indiana has some killer bass fishin.
The bite was great but that shot of the sun through the trees and the scenery at the end were just awesome, great time watching, thanks for sharing it.
That's awesome John! Glad it worked out for you on that one. You definitely put the effort in. Fun little spot too!
Glad you came by the area. It's 10 mins from my house. Love it out there!!!
That pond looked incredible and very fishy. Love the same childlike enthusiasm I share when they're biting. I had a 34 fish Thursday, day off work, small pond and started first thing in the morning. Topwater was ok for the first 1-2 hours but had to switch to 3.5 inch swim baits. When that shut down the wacky rig Yum Dinger in black and blue flake was money. Blessings from the upper Midwest brother.
Similar situation for me this week, on a smaller scale 😅. Frogs didn't do it, black wacky rig and softbait got a largy and a number of rock bass.
That 1st bass was a BEAST
Don't forget that catfishing video where those 3 creeks met from earlier in the year, Oct would be a killer month to do so
You might be the next Bill Dance. Sweet bass fishing! 👍🙂
Caught 5 bass today on the lake. It's a first for me I usually only catch 1 maybe 2 if I'm lucky.
Nice job man
Nice sunset shot. I enjoy your exploration.
Welcome 🙏 to Indiana John lo, looked like u was tarring them up buddy, great 👍 video brother..!
Fish are bustin' all over !!! Very productive evening. That five pounder sure made the day ! Beautiful little lake. Randy B.
I was laughing you where pedling backwards that 5+lb was pulling u back in the weeds lol
We have an extremely good fishery here in Northern Indiana.
Early spring coho salmon and huge crappie, northern pike and yes some great bass.
Glad you had a good time.
Can't wait to see you back on the home turf, awesome video!
I love fishing some of those Indiana waters whenever I visit family out there...especially in spring or fall for the Salmon runs in the creeks
Big fan man keep the great work up man love your content 🎣
Another great video, it was nice being able to ask you sone questions in the live stream!
For me, I'm impressed with you using finesse in getting that ditch LMB. The others were fun to watch too. I've never put too much faith in frogs. Always seemed like a novelty.
Rubber worms, that's the ticket. Overcast days seems on the video. Could be why out of the weeds.
Cool video John those were all nice looking bass. Thank you for sharing. God bless you and your family.....🙏❤🙏❤🙏😊🙂😀
You need to send your buddy a case of beer for turning you on to that lake. WOW!
Good stuff, John. Looks like you had a good stop on the way home.
I am moving back to northern Indiana in 20 days from denver 💪😎 Indiana is my home. Jesus is Lord! Didn't know you're a brother in Christ that's so awesome! I Can't wait to fish for bass again.
True Hoosiers always come back 💪 Jesus coming back soon😊
John, love your videos. Keep them coming, I have fished where you did in Indiana where the Kankakee sign is, there is the 10 mile road down from there where you can get some large bass.
Wow! What an ideal day! So much action.
Nice catches and awesome to see you fishing in northern Indiana again
Awesome video mister John love your videos keep up the good work and go catch some more big ones for us and stay safe
Great video. Love kayak fishing
I remember your visit last year, God Bless, tight lines
Nice catch!! Always enjoy your videos.
LOL I will tell you John Today I kayaked my creek, didn't catch much, but found a couple lures and gave them to a threesome of 7 year old boys fishing, then saw a few big eels, which I have not seen in the creek for years! good day!
Man sticking it out paid off. You went all over the place That's definitely a long fish, this first one. This always helps me pass the slow time at work.
We got some big fish in Indiana. You just need to know where tk go. The biggest bass in the Midwest actually came out of Indiana. 14lbs I believe. Call me when you want to go fish Sugar Creek in the fall. Lol. Great Video.
Looks like a pretty decent day John😉👍 enjoyed your video!
Awesome video as always brother!
I recently hit the river and forgot to bring my go-to zman craws. Rifled through my bag and found a pack of 4" swim'n dingers. I broke about an inch off the top and fished it on an 1/8oz ned ewg and absolutely CRUSHED the smallies. Never would have tried it had I not forgotten my craws.
I like splashy topwaters in water like that. Whopper popper, prop fish, jitterbug, act.
Nice Indiana bass from a resident Hoosier I like it when you hit our state John and it paid off pretty good after you got it going like you say you always figure them out
Great video John lol thats a great day fishing.
Good job John the kayak is the way to go
enjoyed the video, I live about 10 minutes away form that corner. the little town just south of there, if I had known you were there, I'd have come out to fish with you
I need to visit that lake just to catch some fish.. You need to visit Fairfield Glade TN and do some fishing. We have 11 lakes here and there are many flavors of fish.
Getting into light fishing man. I’m excited
love all your videos
Great production! Some nice lookin fish. The best lure in pretty much any situation is gonna be your fav lure. U have confidence in it and experience workin it in ways that work. For me it’s a watermelon seed fluke or a Zoom UV speed worm in junebug or green pumpkin. Great video John. Still enjoyin the content my brother
Nice place and great fishing
I wasn't gonna comment suggestions lol but you welcome them. Usually in calm water, they wont look at a spinnerbait. A little chop and itll work, the blades work off the ripples contrasting light. Plastics in your situation is better
You were in my neck of the woods. Great video as usual
That looked like the sweet spot as far as time goes.
What a great place.
Some days are like that, I have this app it's called bass forecast it mainly goes by the moon phase & weather, you can put in where your wanting to fish & it will forecast that area, 10$ a yr, not bad, that June bug color yum dinger, I hear that it's 1 of the best colors around grass, you had a great flurry of catches there, it's got to be great being able to do as you please when I comes to fishing you are very blessed, you was at the right place at the right time being on CZcams, I'm 22 yrs older than you, if I was younger I might could have had my own channel, but I'm getting prepared for retirement now! Most ppl watch you tube over television cause there's nothing fit to watch that's why so its popular!
Loos like you need to pull the truck off the road more lol
If you want an EXCELLENT creek to fish in Northern Indiana, go to the Paw Paw Creek and fish that. Lots of smallmouth, rock bass, ECT. Good little creek
Very nice Bass 🎣😀
I would have been throwing a fluke rigged the same way as the yum dinger, or a Zara spook.
I think a weightless plastic is a great choice. For me it would be a 5” fluke on a 4/0 EWG. My bait to cover water would be a 3-4” swimbait or a swimming a strike king structure bug on a light 1/8 Texas rig.
Love watching you fish. Try a culprit fire and ice. I do really good on them here in Oklahoma.
Love it that you still stopped for church. 😇
You keep getting closer and closer to my area.
Well starred off bad but definitely paid off by sticking it out. Well done and broke the 5lb mark 🤝🏼💪🏼👏🏼
Good stuff!
Nice bass there John 💪🏻
Great place to fish I've been there many times
How about some CCC? My favorite part of these fishing videos.
Let's go John. Get them big bass
Awesome day to say the least. They ate those dingers up. It gets pricey for me going through plastics like that. I always keep a Chug bug handy when they're busting on bait like that.
I would call that a GOOD day!!
Good day catching
Your in my area John. Luv the channel for 2years
Medium perch under a bobber with 2 feet of leader will bring out the big fish.
Lake Palestine definitely has some giants! My buddy caught almost a 7 lbs out of there earlier this year.
Great video! You need to try a tiny torpedo for that top water action. Can't use it in the grass or pads but maybe in the open areas. But you were pretty successful with those dingers. Just stick with what works! Thanks.
Awesome video's keep up the good work . What size whopper plopper do you use in the creeks and rivers?
I’m from there… there’s a pond heading East on 8 right there that I caught a 5 lb largie out of
Hey I’m curious if you were walking the frog any or just casting and reeling? I have had great success walking a frog this week. It’s my first time using frogs and I love it! I feel like you were in a prime spot for those frogs!
Hey John great video btw when you were catching in the Lilly pads deep in was it sunny that day because they will be deep cover when sunny and scattered when overcast Chris from OHIO
good point i didnt think of that, yes it was sunny
What a nice little lake! Definitely had a fishy look to it!
When it is super still like that, one of my favourite tactics is walking soft plastics like stick baits and crayfish/creature baits over the surface. But one I've found to be really good is paddle-tailed worm baits. The paddle tail really sticks to the calm surface and makes a rapid disturbance when you give it a tug. Both largemouth and smallmouth absolutely hammer it. I find the claws on crayfish baits also work awesome for that.
I agree the rubber crayfish with lifelike claws are good bass baits up here in WI when fishing sandy bottoms. If there is a lot of weeds in the water I switch to rubber worms. Interesting to see how well that YUM works in IN. That lake is full of big bass! Impressive. They must grow faster down south. p.s. sad to see that ditch in the beginning covered in a mat of algae like that. The problem is the farmer overloading the corn field on either side with fertilizer. Don't they have setback rules?
If you ever make it up to West Virginia I'd love to do some fishing with ya
I didn't know it was allowed to just pull over and fish random ditches and bridges here in Indiana. I may have to try that sometime.
DAMN IT! I wish I would have known you were in our area bro! Me and my Cuz could have showed you several SMALLMOUTH heaven spots! I’ll try to watch more closely as to when you plan this trip, so me and my cuz can get you to come our way! We are only about 15 minutes from where you were at! We got several spots on the white river over here you would love! 2-4 lbs smallmouth! Monster largemouth in fact this one spot of ours I caught my PB largemouth at 6 lbs 4 oz! Big Crappie, all 13 species of pan fish massive carp, and even channel cats!
Aye I live In Indiana and my creek fishing been a lot better because of your vids I love them. Would love to fish with you sometime
You’ve been pumping out some good vids man. I’m in over the road trucker I love finding these kind of spots. Do you buy a license in every state?
unfortunately, yes
The Donkey Rig would have been good for that pond the way they where exploding and chasing bait....
Try a twitch twitch pause type of retrieve on that frog. Only got to see a few casts from the frog and noticed that. Still as usual great video
There are a lot of fish in northern Indiana but you have to know where to go.
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! QUESTION, DO YOU HAVE TO BUY A PERMIT TO FISH IN THE DIFFERENT STATES THAT YOU VISIT?
yes
