Once again, in less than seven minutes you created a review that's more informative and entertaining than reviews from the biggest channels. Please, please continue to make reviews for new games when you feel you're equipped to.
SNES Drunk is the best!
BY FAR. It’s like he’s not some paid to brag reviewer.
Also some of the reviews are up to half hour! I know we're tempered by shitty tik tok into having no attention span but a review should be under 10 mins
@@maverickmicdisagree there are a lot of long analysis videos that are worth it. Matthewmatosis is one example
@@maverickmic10 minutes? Sounds like you're still suffering from TikTok brain rot.
The level design is so refreshing and unique. It reminds me a lot of Tropical Freeze where you can just say "hey you know the singing Lion King level with the giraffes on sticks?" and others who played it know exactly what you're talking about because there's only 1 unique level like it. Extremely fun!
Tropical Freeze was actually challenging. This game is a walk in the park.
@@bobc2043 Some is easy, some is a difficult pain.
That level was intentionally put into the game to block players from beating it in one sitting. There's another roadblock style level later too.
The big D had the developers put these overly hard levels into their games to ensure repeat rentals.
Tropical Freeze is one of the greatest games ever made. Every level is the best of the best of platforming, the music is beautiful, the artwork too and the level design is unfazed by almost any other game. This game is just boring, made for children. Yeah some things are innovative, what does it matter if the game presents no challenge at all.
@@bobc2043 exactly my problem with wonder. People are mesmerized by the flashy graphics, but the new enemies are weak and the challenge is overall very low.
When you hear about a new game in 2023 costing $60, remember that 'Bebe's Kids' for the Super Nintendo cost $49.99 when it released in 1994. Adjusted for inflation, that's the equivalent of spending $104.39 in today's dollars
Also remember that plenty of other new games in 2023 cost $70, including Nintendo's own TOTK.
psh. thst's nothing. I got DOOM SNES on SALE for 70 something bucks at service merchandise with my bday money. I think full price was 80 something. I don't even remember how much Earthbound was at retail.
I also remember picking up Mega Man 3 at Toys R Us for around $70.
I love the way you articulately explain why a game is good or bad, instead of just writing it off. I would love to play this game, and I know exactly why. Thank you!
For real! It means so much if somebody actually explains their thoughts and shows examples… like a real review should be! Lol
Before this video I saw one twice as long that basically kept finding different ways to say “this game is good” without actually explaining why
Seriously, when I got Wonder, I was like "man, SNES Drunk would love this, he should review it" and here we are.
Same here
Side tangent, I wish Mega Man would do a Mario World structure.
Like instead of picking a Boss Level, They'd be Boss Worlds with numerous small levels leading to the fight, and bonus levels for items instead of a store.
As a huge Mega Man fan, that would actually be awesome!

The way you've described this game, hell the way it looks, answers the question "what if the programmers staged a coup mid-development and let their creativity and prowess go hog wild?"
And I love such Rockman 4 Minus Infinity type experiences
The way Nintendo described development, not only did they essentially get unlimited time and an expanded budget, when production began EVERY member of the team was encouraged to contribute ideas - not just level designers and programmers but members of the art and sound teams. Even series veteran sound designer Koji Kondo contributed a few wondrous ideas.
Hearing SNESdrunk mention new games like Elden Ring and Just Cause 3 has me intrigued!
I had my doubts because I thought it was catching too much praise but it didn’t take one stage for me to be glad I gave it a chance. I thought everyone saying you feel “wonder” playing it sounded a bit hyperbolic but yeah that’s exactly how it feels. It reminds me of how 2, world and Land all felt completely fresh at the time.
I felt the same exact way. I loved the reveal trailer but thought the Wonder Seed hype was exaggerated and was worried it would feel more of the same.
Then I played like 5 seconds of it at Best Buy at a demo booth and instantly felt a difference in how it controls. Bought it immediately while still feeling skeptical.
It was when I got the Wonder Seed on the second level where I got a huge grin on my face. I don't mind the more casual and lower difficulty so far. It has a lot more variety than I thought it would.
It's super cool that you decided to cover this game. Even though it's not SNES, it's still what I call SNES-adjacent which is what I say when you cover Genesis or Game Boy Advance. That said you really hit the nail on the head with the difficulty. Like you hinted at, I didn't really care for the Mario Maker games as they were entirely too focused on being brutal. Super Mario Wonder struck that perfect balance.
Wonder flower made me slightly anxious as I had absolutely no idea what was going to happen next 😂
Love 2D Mario. Mario 3, world, New Super Mario, Wonder, fan games... ALL awesome.
I've been enjoying it a lot, it definitely feels like the most genuinely creative and imaginative Mario game since Mario 3D World, which it reminds me a lot of. I don't think it's QUITE up there with Super Mario World or Mario 3 though. One thing you didn't mention that I think the game deserves a lot of praise for is the reboot of the art style. The game is noticeably more "cartoony," rubbery, and expressive than previous games, which were starting to feel a bit stiff and routine. Some of the characters are just so full of life; I laughed out loud the first time I saw the popcorn bad guys.
My only real critiques are twofold: the game feels short, though the difficulty of some levels also paradoxically makes the game feel longer. But you definitely breeze through about 80% of it pretty swiftly. I also feel like the game has inexplicably boring bosses, which feels really strange and even distractingly disappointing, just given how wonderfully imaginative all the enemy characters are. Why is Baby Bowser the boss of every world? And why is that mechanical Bowser thing the boss of every airship?
But other than those things, I think it's a really delightful romp. It feels like a good introduction to Mario for a new generation of kids.
those two issues are also issues with 3 and world so...
@@jclkaytwo They at least have the Koopalings. I don't know when it was decided that players would rather just fight Baby Bowser seven times.
@@JJMcCullough the koopalings are not good bosses lmao. there's nothing mechanically interesting about them (unlike wonder's bowser jr fights) and they can be taken down in practically zero time flat (again, unlike wonder). they're the most sorry excuses for boss fights I've seen in a mario game (besides mario 1's bosses which don't really count)
but considering you keep calling bowser jr "baby bowser" for some reason, it's understandable that you'd forget how lame the koopalings are
@@jclkaytwo Get help.
I might get into it once I'm finished with Star Ocean 2.
Excellent review. As others have said, you should do this more often. Your explanations and knowledge make it much better than mainstream reviewers.
The review I didn't know I needed, thanks man.
I was actually going to pass on this game because I heard it was too easy and not challenging. Glad to hear it's not so bad.
Some levels are really hard, but the whole game is really fun.
Long time fan of your channel and your specific approach to what it's like just actually playing the games, instead of getting tied up in other peoples' opinions them. Always refreshing!
While I do really enjoy your videos covering the older titles it's great to hear your take on the newer entries. Keep the good content coming.
You know, a game is reaching new heights. When it ends up as a segment on the tonight show. Because they never talk about video Games. And leave it to Nintendo to make it a Mario game that does it. When I saw that segment. I almost felt i was in 80s all over again when the NES came out and everybody was talking about it.
Thanks for the video. As someone who hasn't played a new Mario game in several years, it was incredibly helpful to watch.
My sentiments exactly, Mr. Drunk. The best game I've played in 2023!
I don't think you know what the word sediment means, sir. Did you mean sentiments?
It’s amazing. Really enjoyed it. But for my money, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is the best 2D platformer on Switch. Tho there ain’t much in it
I died over 400x before I completed Jump, jump, jump in the special world, and laughed the entire time!
That level will be the death of me… still can’t do it… but I’m not even mad lol
@@-wolfpacsnakepit Literally just jump to the beat, but try to be in the air when the next platform drops. I thought auto super mushroom badge was helping me, but then I cleared it when I got tiny haha! I think you actually carry more momentum when big! Making the jumps a touch slower
my kids and i love smb wonder! the main story is easy enough for my kids to play and finish while i grind my way to the special world and collect every single badge, 10 coins , flagpole and wonder seeds. its fun for both casual and hardcore gamers!
Well, it's Mario, it's rare for the mainline games in the series to be bad, but I agree that this one stands out. What's incredible is how consistent Nintendo is, in that there were people working on this game who have been present since the very beginning, back in the 80s - and it shows. They also encouraged experimentation, and this is the kind of game they came up with. I definitely prefer it to NSMB. As an aside, they should've leaned into the psychedelic side of the Mario series a long time ago!
I wish Sonic had a publisher that was as dedicated to quality and a team that was as talented.
@@aperturius hows superstar? I bought it the same day i got Wonder but haven't even unwrapped the plastic
The first thing that floored me about the game was seeing that Piranha Plants on Parade footage. Mainly because I was shocked those things had such high pitched, Chipmunks type singing voices. Maybe I watched Little Shop of Horrors too much as a kid, and expected them to all sound like Levi Stubbs. I dunno.
I'm totally new to the Switch, just got it a few days ago. I think I was waiting for something like this to pique my interest just enough to finally make me pull the trigger. After your review, I'm VERY much looking forward to trying it out!
I like the older ones better, but it's cool that you can play as the Princesses and everyone
Only took 30 years for another high calibre Super Mario platformer... but they did it, nailed it.
For me, this game's best quality is that is just pure, absolute fun.
It's what I thought the moment they revealed the first trailer.
Even the more difficult levels put a smile to my face.
Spot on review. I must agree the difficulty spike between regular world levels and special world levels was a bit of a shock. Even still, the variety in level designs made it worth it in the end 😁
“Hell yeah it is!” - big chuckle out of that. You sir are a gem, glad you’re giving this level of joy out. 5/5
Of course the drunk would give a glowing review to Super Mario Acid. How could he not like it?!...
PsxDrunk - chrono cross, ff7-9 tactics, persona 1/2, parasite eve, kings field, metal gear solid, etc etc
Imagine the possibilities
Not even close to GOTY, but it is an amazing Mario game.
Depends on your genre preferences
@@napoleonfeanor Nah. Some of us cant be bothered with supporting a milked IP.
@@samusaran7317milked ip? this is the first main mario game since 2017 lmfao
The level design on this one is superb. Nintendo has outdone itself once again, it's exactly as you mentioned, I couldn't stop playing because I had to see what the next gimmick was going to be. And I couldn't stop thinking that the dev team may have had some mushroom tea while creating it, lol
I have been playing Wonder with my 7 year old. I love that the game is easy enough for her to play but challenging enough that I am not bored.
Baldur's Gate 3 is still my GOTY, but Wonder is still a fun experience. Way too easy, IMO.
Hey Drunk I just wanna say that I've watched a bunch of footage and reviews of this game and this is the only one that convinced me to buy it. You get right to the point of what makes a game fun to play (or not) and your reviews are so unswayed by the hype. I was also undecided on it because of NSMB and worried it wouldn't live up to the rewarding challenge of Super Mario 3 or World but you settled those fears. YOU ARE A SUPER REVIEWER !! and I hope you have a great rest of your day!
That's a really nice thing to say, thanks! You're gonna love this game
One other thing that I love is that the game is just dripping with charm. The animations, the little voice clips from the flowers, the music, all of it makes me smile. Wonder really does live up to the hype. :)
This is unrelated to the video, but I spent a bunch of time the year before the 3DS Eshop shut down figuring out what I was going to buy and your videos helped me a lot. So thanks for that 👍
If SNES Drunk gives a game newer than 1995 this kinda praise, you know it's fire.
You summed up exactly how I felt about the New Super Mario Bros series and my trepidation about this one. If it isn’t the hollow experience I had with that, I guess I should give it a shot
I like how all the American Super Mario 2 character specific powers are in the badges.
Great review! Can't wait until I'm able to get my hands on this one.
Unrelated, but hearing you reference modern games like Elden Ring and Just Cause 3 is kind of a trip.
Over a year ago, I had made a list of my top 10 favourite Mario games. Having since played Wonder and Odyssey, I’m probably going to have to update that video at some point.
Got this yesterday and I'm only a few levels in. I got to tell you that I'm already having a blast with this game. I can't wait to get even further and see what else this game has in store for me.
Next game on my list, the Mario RPG remake. I'm definitely going to be busy until the end of the year.
Mario Wonder and DK Tropical Freeze are both amazing 11/10 2D Platformers!!!!!!!!
I got to the end last week... I really loved the game and I really hope they do more stages to it. It is amazing, but even being big, it feels kinda short. I'm playing every level once again and probably i'll do it again and again and again and again
play with friends/family if you can, i tried to do a replay solo and i didnt get far, but its still great with multiplayer
Great review, Drunk! This is also my favorite game of 2023 so far, and it's my favorite 2D platformer since Rayman Legends, which is another great platformer if you crave more boundless creativity.
I'm looking forward to buying a new console to go along with a 55 inch flat screen TV I'm gifting myself for Christmas. This review plus all the other positive reviews for this Mario game might tip me towards buying the Nintendo Switch
The piranha-plants sing? Nice! They really are 'Audrey IIs' now!
This was wonderful, hopefully we'll see more Switch and Steam reviews!
Dam, loving the new switchdrunk videos man. Please, keep em coming 🙌
Honestly one of my favorite all-time channels. You do a lot of good for people pushing through rough periods in life. Please never stop making videos.
Sincerely appreciate your work.
Reviewing this video game helps people through rough periods in life?! How?!?!
How it helps? It's a fun, engaging game that may help someone focus on something that is much more cheerful and charming than what they may be going through with some particularly ugly personal situations. Perhaps not as "direct" as seeing a therapist etc but also much more affordable than the options presented to your average American. There is a reason (many in fact) that consumer price index prices over last 10 years have actually decreased as relates to gaming, media, distractions as they are called by some. While meanwhile, the cost of actual healthcare (physical and mental) becomes more and more prohibitively expensive for your average American, but that is another topic.
Wonder is what NSMB should've been. Wonder is awesome... good mix of challenge and cakewalk. Some of those badge challenges man. I was hooked on getting them and mastering them. I like the bubble flower power up.
And in a few weeks Mario RPG!
NSWB did the evolution of collectathons. Which was a huge mistake.
It felt empty and just canvas stuff you rush through. Way too many levels, so every level was the same, just "hey collect all 3 coins!".
@@livinlicious i hated how they leaned into coins for NSMB 2
Bubble powerup was taken from an old rom hack.
Search: Nintendo stole a new Bubble Power-Up from the ROM Hack?
I'll give DS & Wii some slack since they were new for each system for the time and while not the best 2D games, they were still good and can still be enjoyable. It's 2 & Wii U that should be trash on because there's nothing new about them. Aside from coins gimmick in 2 & baby Yoshi's in Wii U, there the same game as there predecessors and not an good one at that.
@@jaretco6423I think U is generally the strongest of the four games in most aspects. but yeah, that lack of innovation issue completely killed any of the game's intrigue
The final final stage is brutal
I've have watched SNES Drunk videos for awhile and this is the most positive review I have seen in years. Dude can't even hide his giddiness!
I only just beat this game today and I can vouch for SNES Drunk - if you have a Switch and don't have this game yet, *_GET IT._* I had such a blast with this game, even if, as he says, the jump from four stars to five stars feels like a significant spike in difficulty.
Incredibly refreshing level off effort from Nintendo on this one .
I bought this game almost out of obligation. I expected more NSMB. And NSMB is boring, sterile, and same-y. But Wonder... Where the hell did this game come from?! There are so many ideas and so much variety and so many surprises. And it's all fun and silly and beautiful. The difference between Wonder and NSMB is astounding.
This game is fun as hell I'm glad I pre-ordered it I have the money because if I don't buy the game right away something always comes up and I can't get the game until like a year or two later it always happens so this is why I pre-ordered games something always comes
The background/foreground level stuff reminds me of Virtualboy Wario Land. Also a great game!
As an old school mario fan, I never liked the 3d ventures , I loved the 3ds and wiiu ones , but this one is pure magic , reminds me of SMB3 to be frank down to small details , it also helps that it looks stunning and plays like a dream and gas great music....I didn't feel so happy since smbw on snes.
Ds and 3ds games are brilliant and brings the fun if the old games. I agree 3d Mario dosent have the same charm or playability.(sonic is the same)
it was so good. i literally blasted through it 100% in the first 36 hours of owning it. its still been fun playing multiplayer after that, but i havent returned to solo.
I don't get it. Finished the game yesterday and enjoyed it, but certainly not more than Odyssey. Heck, it didn't even match Donkey Kong Country Tropic Freeze. Why do so many judge this the Second Coming of gaming? Don't misunderstand, it's still a very good game, worth your time and money, but it hasn't reinvented the wheel like so many claim.
Nintendo fans are starved for good exclusives so they always lose minds when a decent game drops.
@@Dermetsuyou know that's a massive generalization
Side note though…I was surprised to find that I thought sonic super stars was the better game (since they came out so close together) sonic was fresh every single level with so much to enjoy and ever level felt well done and fully thought out. I’m usually a Mario fan but in this case I’m glad to see sonic get his chance to shine after all the bad games that the franchise has put out over the years, sonic mania being an exception.
I was indeed wondering....what all thenhype was for. Excellent swift analysis, my dude. Thanks!
This game looks amazing! I gotta get a switch. Really enjoying your channel btw ❤
This game looks super fun to play, and definitely gonna play this. When I’m done with other games on my list.
I’ve been hesitant to give this a go but your review convinced me. I’m gonna pick this up tomorrow
This game is the best example of simple, pure fun I can think of. It's not as revolutionary as other games, it's not as complex as other games, it's not as emotionally investing as other games
But what is here feels crafted to nearly perfection. Its an accessible, charming, and fun game from beggining to end. This is the real Nintendo experience.
I just wish it had save files. I wanna replay the game but I don't wanna delete my file or make a whole new user. That's probably the biggest gripe I have about it and I'm a hella mean critic so you know it's damn good.
Great video and awesome decision to cover this game, nice job! It’ll be a good ripple for the massive and great channel of snesdrunk
Thanks for the informative review!
Its an absolute blast playing SMB Wonder !! Haven't had this so much fun since World
My wife wants to get this for me for Christmas - definitely looking forward to it!
Gotta be honest, I absolutely despise the elephant power up and I hate that it's likely going to become a regular piece in the SMB cannon.
I wasn't really hyped before, but now I'm curious enough to try Wonder out. Thanks SDrunk 👍🏼
Now THIS is what I call a useful review
Thanks!
This feels like one of those years where there is no "game of the year", because there have been so many top-quality games that comparing Mario Wonder to Tears of the Kingdom to Baldur's Gate 3 is doing a disservice to all of those games (or Resi 4 remake, or Street Fighter 6 if that's your jam etc.). It's a tenuous title at the worst of times, but during the best years like this, it just utterly fails to embody the sheer amount of quality going on in the various sectors. I firmly believe 2023 is going to be another 2017 or 2007: widely remembered as one of the best years for video games.
6:27 wow they commissioned cyriak for the soundtrack
Ok this looks so much better than I expected it to be. But I’m saving this for Christmas.
I beat this game on its release weekend without reading any reviews and I’m glad I did. It was a great experience.
I gotta get that game for my Switch very soon. It looks incredibly fun! Great review, SNES drunk!
The problems is there are 2 styles of 2D Mario games, and people dont really think about it. Mario 3 and Mario World are the 2 styles of games, First style Mario 3 transformation and powerup is the main hook of game. Second style Mario World platforming and riding Yoshi is the main hook. I feel wonder combine both style in a even 50/50 way
I gotta say it, you're a decent reviewer. You aren't too proud to admit something is genuinely good.
I have just the last level left (the batch marathon) and seems pretty imposible, but every time I get a little bit further.
It's fun to see so many new enemy designs in a 2D Mario game. I've been playing through with my wife and we've been having a blast with it.
Thanks. I will be getting this when I finish Spider Man. This will be my first 2D Mario since Super Mario World. I can't wait.
It sounds like an instant classic already, holy hell. And the replay values should be high too.
I just know it would fall so far short of providing the magic that Super Mario World had when I was kid.
Will be picking this one up for my son for Christmas, and will enjoy playing the game with him. He's old enough now that he'll probably be better than me.
Since I saw the trailer I thought "man, this is gonna be such a trip" I love when games aren't afraid to go this creative and crazy, like back in the day
Wish the latest Contra games had at least a bit of what made them so crazy in games like Contra Hardcorps, 3, Shattered Soldier and NeoContra
Right, exactly. Contra 3 is a great comparison with all the mini bosses, you get a similar feeling
Wish I could love this like so many do, but it feels so generic, like NSMB only with 30 seconds of "not generic" each level
The world map is all coins, for unlocking secrets to finding them, coins coins coins.
Mario World "How do I get to that island?", "Oh so I had to goto that secret exit that lead me to that level that lead me to a secret exit that lead me to a factory that opened switch blocks so I could use them as a platform to get to there, dope".
Mario Wonder "How do I, oh, I just pay 50 coins, cool, I guess"
Secret exists are rare, boss battles are either bleh or non existent
So many 2D platformers over the last 10 years, Mario simply isn't king of platformers anymore
I think people saying this feels like a 2D SMO too is heavily insulting SMO as that's easily one of the greatest games of all time and finally felt like Mario was actually progressing the genre forward again for the first time in a long time
I played a 4-6 levels each day before getting bored and going to something else, since hitting the half way point it's dropped to 2-3 levels.
I just do not get the hype
Celeste, Rayman Legends, DKC Tropical Freeze etc... So many have just done 2D platforming better
Add in that the freaking difficulty of the damn game is such a snoozefest. I've failed to get everything in a level in less than 5 levels so far.
Which I don't get how people don't say this is a collectathon when just like NSMB we're back to 3 coins per level only now we also have wonder seeds to collect every level too.
Levels are so damn short and quick and just plain easy.
2 of the special world levels have gave a mild challenge and that's it.
Difficulty is subjective though so fair play if you genuinely like this level of challenge.
On top of SMW, Celeste, and Kaizo romhacks, this game has influences from Metal Gear Solid, Crypt Of the Necrodancer, Contra, Bionic Commando, and especially the Donkey Kong Country Returns games in terms of level and boss design. Just look at the Dark levels, the temple and rolling fossil levels, the Wonder sequence with the swarm chasing you, and SPOILER the final fight with Bowser.
I'm gonna buy this upcoming week, as soon as I get my next paycheck! 😍 It's been tough having to wait so long since release.. 😅
Probably picking this one up for christmas. Hope my kids are as excited for it as I am.
It's not like I don't like mario wonder, it's a fun game, it just.... didn't light my soul on fire the same way mario 3 or world did
is it the nostalgia?
@@jclkaytwo I don't think believe it or not mario maker may have burned me out
