Mine (ex) is a doctor. There is no better occupation for a narc then a doctor who saves the lives of children (which he does). All the adoring grown-ups who "owe (the narc) our lives" "how can we repay you" "will forever live in debt to (this narc)". On the surface, it seems remarkable. Then a dear friend (who quickly was thrown away after this observation said... "(narc)? Isn't it funny... those who love you the most...are the ones who know you the least."

Hi Maat11. I genuinely understand where you're coming from but there's no winners and losers in the situation you appear to be in - just survivors.- and you're bound to feel as though you've "lost", and that you're "weak", if you treat your situation as a battle. As tough as it is to do in the moment try to recognise and accept that that's a battle of egos they _must_ fight (it's what defines their illness,) and one you'll _always_ "lose", regardless of how well you fight. Respectfully, if you ask yourself why you fight back (and question how you fight back) you'll get a better understanding of how to move forward in a healthy way.
Something you'll need to accept is that if the person in question is someone you love, and want to be loved by, then you're bound to get scarred to some extent regardless of what you do - that's a heartbreaking but unavoidable fact; it's how you respond to that scarring that'll determine how deeply you're scarred. I don't know the specifics of your situation but I'll remind you that remaining well (physically and emotionally) and "letting go" are two entirely separate issues, and that how "strong" you truly are depends on how you wear your own scars, not how many scars you inflict on others. All the best to you.

I know what you mean...I feel the same! Everyday for one reason or the other is very difficult and overwhelming. It's like a dog eat dog world now and you're always having to look out for yourself and avoid being a victim of something or someone. It's tiring and anxiety inducing being on flight or fight mode constantly.
Where I live everyone is pretty miserable and walking hostile shells so it's draining when their bad vibes rub off. I can't help but absorb that negative energy. At the same time being an empath I'm highly concerned about society and the direction the world is going.

@@KooPooky your in no way blabbing! We need fellow empaths to talk to and if possible get with another in person to recharge and get your frequency back up where it naturally emanates, although it seems extremely hard to find any nowadays. As far as living where majority are hostile, bitter, etc. , unfortunately that seems to be where society has vastly gone and it leaves us more vulnerable and forced to be in a constant state of defense and seeking to understand why they do what they do. We are so acutely tuned in to not only our own energy and emotions but also all that surrounds us and we are easy targets, especially for the narcissist. It says somewhere in Sun Tzu's Art of War, that sometimes it PAYS to use the enemy's OWN strategies AGAINST them, usually they can't take it.
Offer them canceler responses to their silly, loaded speeches, just give them a response like "TIME WILL TELL". If they ask you where did you get your new sweater? Time will tell. You respond with something GENERIC. They can be fun IF you know they are a narcissist.

Yep they may believe that if they outwork someone, they become better than them. That’s how they think they can control whether or not they’re the best. That’s why I don’t agree with the part of the video that said they’re lazy. They’re only lazy when it’s a task that does not elevate them.

The ones I know are very busy putting themselves out there for adoration. They dont sit still long. But they dont work. They are lazy because they dont like tasking for others. That said there are many that do work but its usually doing something that gives them their narsisistic supply. Many are politicians, CEOS, surgeons etc. And some like to make you think they are busy. Pretend or lying about their work.

    • @sndgrpr6633
      @sndgrpr6633 Před 6 lety +4

Hi cynophilist boi. Laziness isn't a rare character trait and that's all it is - a character trait, not an expression of narcissism. Loosely put, narcissists have damaged egos, and the bulk of their narcissistic behaviour stems from a pathological need to protect their ego from further injury. How they do that is as varied as it is with 'well' people. So while 1710tmk's observation is reasonable, given there are more 'workaholics' than 'lazy people' in the general population, and 'work' is a common way to deal with self-esteem issues, those traits in themselves are not particularly useful in helping to establish whether someone is a narcissist or not.
Credentialed and armchair experts alike have taken to spreading many ignorant claims regarding narcissism (I'm guessing for reasons that have more to do with their own ego issues), which has led to a lot of general confusion and misinformation about the condition. One important (and pertinent) example of that is this bizarre notion that narcissists "lack empathy". As you I hope know, that's utter crap - narcissists, like sociopaths (as distinct from psychopaths), simply have an irrational tendency to override their empathy when they feel the _need_ to. (So if your dad has never shown you an empathy he is not "merely" a narcissist, which is entirely possible of course).
I feel for you (it's an ugly situation to be in ain't it) but I certainly hope you don't take the advice given in this video - it'll just turn you into a toxic person and that'll just add one more "victim" to the list.
However difficult it may be for you to rationalise at the moment your dad's not 'evil' mate, he's really unwell, and a sad truth is that it's extremely unlikely he'll ever be 'healed' of his narcissism. He has very little control over his narcissistic behaviour,; in fact, despite how "obviously wrong" this may sound to you now, know that _you_ have more control over how he acts than he does. If you use that knowledge lovingly, and can resist falling into the trap of "demanding" (or expecting) that hee _not_ act narcissistically (very difficult to do - we all have an ego' right?) you may be suprised at how much less toxic your situation can become. Again, and contrary to what some would have you believe, your dad's not trying to _wilfully_ destroy your ego, he's trying to _pathologically_ protect his own. Try keep that in mind - especially at the worse of times. If you don't you'll just be adding bitterness to your heartache. All the best to you.

I stop him when he's talking, telling him I was distracted and wasn't listening. I apologize "sincerely" and ask him to start over. When he does, I wander away. It's funny to watch him follow me trying to get my attention! I play up the depression that he caused. I'm dull, listless, uncaring, and unresponsive until suddenly I jump up, get ready, and go out with my friends and have fun! Then come back and go back into "depression", but laugh when I'm on the phone or watching TV. I'm totally unpredictable. Drives him crazy! The best revenge is to create a happy life that he isn't part of and watch his jealousy. Yep, like 4 yr olds.

If my narc makes a remark about me being an airhead, I just laugh and agree, "Yep, I always have been!" and show by your attitude that whatever they are trying to make you feel badly about is something that you love about yourself :) I really enjoyed listening to this video. You made me laugh -thanks!

My narc husband likes to attack my religion (Catholic), he recently used the unfortunate event of those dead kids being found on Catholic property. He goes “Well, how does THAT make you feel that the Catholics did this?” in a snarky tone. I simply told him I felt bad about it, but it wasn’t my place to judge or punish. The proper authorities will deal with it accordingly. That shut him up because I didn’t give him the reaction he wanted. I also told him that ALL religions have their down sides and people who abuse it. He always grasps at straws, trying to find things to get me on; meanwhile, HE is the alcoholic, HE is the cheater, HE is the narcissist…

I am trying to get out of this situation, and to become more independent. I do feel like a fool. It seems to me like narcissist are very good at fooling people to who they really are. My husband has been good on and off since we have been together. He does make me feel miserable because of these narcissist traits. He has made me many promises. I have music , which has been monetized , and I feel like he hates talking about this and other promising issues that are now going on for me. I fully support him in his endeavors. If you have dated more than 1 person with narcissist personality disorder, they become so transparent and predictable YOU YOURSELF START TO FEEL PSYCHIC AND CAN PREDICT EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO DO. She told me I was perfect ( which I know I am not) , she was constantly watching my expressions and misreading them, she tried to TRAUMA BOND with me by telling me every horrible story or wrong doing she perceived happened to her, she took my jokes as literal ,needed to talk to me all day, then it went to lies and discard because she said I wasn't taking care of her financial needs?!. It was like a light switch and a weird surreal experience.

A narcissist is a bit like a flame. A flame cannot exist without oxygen; cut off the oxygen and the flame dies out very quickly.
A narcissist also has no real power or control without other people around or accessable to abuse/use/charm/manipulate. This is essentially what they live for - to create drama, pain, sadness, and chaos, especially to those closest to them. They simply cannot avoid doing this or miss an opportunity, since this is a big source of supply to them and they need it.
If you were to take a narcissist to a remote island with absolutely no people, no way to get back home and just leave them there with no communication tools, they'd most likely go crazy and be extremely bored and depressed until they either offed themselves or died of starvation.
Therefore, the only real way to injure the narcissist is to take away/lessen their sources of supply, or ignore them and don't feed into them. They need attention constantly, so if their targets don't seem to be affected, it will most likely confuse them and throw off their plans a little bit.
A narcissist can't exist without a captive audience. They must always reflect themselves onto others, like some sort of tragic soulless vampire that will never ever get enough. Their personalities are
black holes, and they have gaping dark voids where their hearts should be.

My mother is a 3rd generation Narc. The reason I was put on this earth was to wait on her hand and foot. I realized this by age 11 or 12 and didn't sign on to this agenda. Drove her nuts
    Anyway.....
On my fathers side of the family are people who can really talk. They will follow you all over the house talking and into the bathroom and not miss a breath. My sister got this gene. So she was always doing what you suggested in this video and drove my mother nuts. So I love how you put this as a suggestion. In the comments below I did see where someone said you don't want to share information that they can use against you. That is correct you don't want to do that. But my sister had a skill in sharing things that were useless. If you go into great detail on what you had for breakfast, or how much you like the chair you sit in at work. The paint color on the wall that you look at all day in the office. None of this is something that could be used. My sister was a master at this without even realizing she was doing this. She can read cookbooks like a novel and have a long one sided conversation on what she had read. So I had a full hard belly laugh when you said to do this.
When my sister was in the 8th grade her music teacher's husband died. He was out shoveling snow and had a heart attack and died. He was 40 years old. From that moment on my father couldn't do anything without my mother trying to stop him from doing what he wanted to do, and inject me doing it. Because..... He is over 40 and could have a heart attack and die. When I turned 40 and started in on her old habit of trying to get me to do something for her. I would say: I'm sorry, I am over 40 now. I can't be doing things like this. I'll have a heart attack and die. Don't you care about my health? Drove her nuts..... she didn't have an answer (my father is now 85 and never had any heart issues his whole life)
When I announced I was getting married to my husband I was gotten rid of. As you know Narc's are all about image. A gay marriage is not the image we want to present to the ladies at the garden club. (aside the fact all these women have known me since the day I was born and know i'm gay. But they do give her the courtesy of not saying anything) Was this easy to go through? No, but every coin has 2 sides. I don't have this crazy in my life anymore. I live a very peaceful now..... Narc free.....

Misty DeLaine. Honey please don't do what I did! Save money, stash away if you can and be really sure to have the best attorney who understands your with a narcissist and a phony compulsive liar. Protect yourself. A weak attorney will hurt you bad divorcing the narc. Good luck.

Misty DeLaine I’m with you. After 15 years, mine is still a monster. He moved 4 min from me and life has been hell. He’s becoming more and more threatening. But now that I know what he has, I’m working on becoming more mentally strong! Prayers for you!

I have used these tactics and they go berserk!! 😂These are good for those people at work that you can't really get rid of. Obviously, if your spouse is a narcissist just leave, don't bother using these, just leave.

I started doing these things with my husband several years ago and they worked!. Before I moved out, I started with ignoring, and to my surprise it worked. When it came to the little digs, I would just say, “yeah, that’s me,” and then move on. Totally deflated him because I proudly “owned” whatever he was trying to degrade me with. And when I got sick of his lectures, I began dominating the conversation and talking erratically whenever I had the energy. I’m sure he thought me scattered and blonde, but it was my act. Eventually he lost his grip on me, although through it all I would leave every interaction exhausted. Now I think I’ve completely gained the upper hand ... he openly admires me and freely admits his insecurities. (He still tries to impress me with his boring I-know-it-all lectures though.) But we’ve separated and I’ll never live with him again.

....I was married to a Narcissist, but it wasn't a common term back in the mid eighties. ...and OMG. I had enough of that, after only two years ....and he IS STILL THE SAME, probably worse. It's actually sad, isn't it , when you look at people who are a Narcissistic abuser and think to yourself..." Wow, this is how you treat people,/ think / and the whole deal "??? It's also a bit frightening, due to their lack of empathy and having no conscience.
