I think Joel saying "Love you guys" at the end is a REAL testament to being as real as a youtuber gets. I don't think any of the other youtubers I'm subscribed to do that, it makes one feel like family.
As a dog walker, I would do something similar with my 2 off-leash packs. The dogs firstly had to have recall or they were not let off-leash. Once I had determined that they did have recall and they came when called, if they chose to ignore me, I would do your "Go Get" method but more like a consequence where they would then be leashed and remain leashed for the rest of the walk. My recall word was"Let's go!" All my pack dogs learned that command and understood its meaning. Any dog who continued to ignore that command would end up being let go from my pack because of the liability involved.
Having dogs on a farm makes me very militant about obedience from my dogs. I have had more than one instance where they were in danger and because of their obedience I could give them a "come" or "leave it" to keep them safe.
How can people not like the Doorway Method?? I LOVE the Doorway Method - so simple, immediate results, and takes hardly any effort in the way of time and energy. I even do it to my neighbor's dog (who receives zero trainging) when I bring him over to play with my 1.5 year old high energy rescue mutt, and he even gets it!
I don't think people even try it before they complain. It's like the difference between single ply TP and Charmin. 1 works the rest do but not nearly as well. Why suffer?
Making the podcasts bi-monthly is a good idea. Gives you more free time, which you deserve. Also takes away my reason for not doing stuff lol
When my dog doesn't come, I take a step toward her, and she knows I mean business. I really like this method. I encourage people to do it in my own life too
Same here. For the most part my dog’s recall is pretty solid, but she has her moments. When she sees me walking towards her she knows she’s coming to me one way or another, whether she does so herself or if I have to pull her by the collar to where I originally called her. She usually comes to me when she sees me start walking towards her.
My 6 month old puppy thinks that taking a step towards her means I'm going to chase her. And her favorite game is chase... We have a long way to go

Exactly! All I have to do is act like I'm fixing to come get them because when you do the go get method they learn that there's no getting away from it. They would much rather have the happy you that welcomes them when they actually come rather than the you that comes and gets them and sits their butts down.
Training a “bomb proof” recall is so important, I used your go get method with methods from other trainers and it literally saved my service dog’s life!
He is for mobility and PTSD, and they do so much more than just help with emotions, but it is hard to explain in short form.
I went to the pharmacy and had my dog in the car, so once I put my prescription in I went and got my dog out to walk around so he wasn’t left in the heat.
I took him to a grassy spot near the road to see if he needed to toilet because I didn’t want him peeing on the building.
He started to bounce around playfully and the leash pulled out of my hand and he ran straight onto an extremely busy road.
Luckily the closest lane was empty but by the time I screamed his recall cue out his head was almost under the wheel of an off road camper trailer, he pivoted immediately and raced back to me.
There was literally a single step between him and death, I was absolutely hysterical and sat on the grass with him crying for a long time 😢😕
If I hadn’t been so focused on training and proofing a solid recall that day would’ve had a totally different outcome 😐

I'm so very sorry you had to go through this with your dog. That scare had to be horrible, especially with you having PTSD, no matter the reason is that you have it.

"Shaping a behaviour thru successive approximations". Yeah, that is the phrase I need when I'm explaining how we have changed quite a few strong problem behaviours in our dog reactive rescue male GSD. I only explained it as "any choice he makes that is 'toward' the behaviour I want and/or away from the problem behaviour, I reinforce". Once I got the idea that I could and should reward "less than perfection" - we made amazing progress. Kinda embarrassing looking back at my thinking. It works very well with our guy, never used this before, never had a clue about most training stuff 30 years ago with my earlier dogs.
I love the doorway method. My pitbull will stand at the doorway and wait for a release word every time. No more flying out the door.

It's so important to nurture relationships if you want it to be "ideal." This ranges from following through, with "come" for your dogs to having a standing date with your partner to setting aside time to get a better understanding or relationship with your God! I have a English cream golden.. so I’m going to schedule a phone call with you . She has a appointment with the vet. Some of her issues I wonder aren’t eye sight related. Woofing at people when they put their hand in her face. And she’s run into a few things. . .
I love seeing the podcast every week, but I also get that there is life to live and this is a lot of time every week to dedicate to the pod. So I'd be a little sad to not get my weekly wild ride through the Joel and Eric headspace, but it's understandable to need to drop it back a little.

My GSD has pretty good recall even in high drive situations such play drive when throwing a ball or tracking the sent of the ball when she trying to find it. I thought she didn’t listen at times but realized she couldn’t hear me since I was pretty far away and wasn’t projecting my voice loud enough. Now I’m louder and she can hear me and comes immediately when I call her back.

It’s about getting your dog to know it doesn’t have a choice. It can either come to you or you will get it and drag it to you. But either way it has to end up by you. It needs to learn it has no choice
Couple podcast topics
A- maybe talk about your main struggles when starting your training business as far as things dog training related that you have learned from the countless dogs and maybe how you've changed / tailored them to now in similar situations from the past. Maybe that's too.much "inside baseball" maybe it's for the program more...?
2- on the helper dog thing. People ask about this a decent amount and it's not a 1 size fits all thing I know, you do have to be very in tune to your dog which , IMO. Needing to have a well trained dog that has been around a decent amount of situations before you even attempt using it as a helper.
Breed research needs to be taken into account, temperament across the board ...lots of variables I know. So it makes it a hard topic but it'd be cool for your insight.
I knew I liked Beckman's dog training tips, after listening to this podcast and now I see a whole different side and like him even more.

I used the doorway and go get with great success. My dog learned very quickly.
i did this with my puppy…then for a few months i was gone so much and then home but busy…i just slacked off…her recall went south. when i gave a treat for every recall the puppy ran to the door, inside and into a beautiful sit…waiting for her treat….
last week i started up again, she’s 2, she was surprised the first time…her face oh treats again !

Skidboot is a pretty famous Australian Cattle Dog. You didn't mention how smart AKC's are, they are super trainable. I'm a first time dog owner with a AKC. I curbed him of his heel nipping & herding of me when he was 3 months old. He still tries to herd the cat. He's 10 months old now and gets 8-12 miles of exercise everyday plus trick training for mental stimulation. He loves learning new things. He's very food and toy motivated. We started him on hand feeding and a lot of engagement right when we got him at 7 weeks old. The only issue we have with him is protection reactivity around our condo building. He walks in crowds and past dogs everyday on our walks, even when other dogs are barky, he ignores them. He's only reactive in his "territory." The Cesar-hiss, butt touch, & collar grab does not work on him, like you said AKC's are tough. I do use your clap/hey when he doesn't "off" furniture the first time I say it. We just started wearing a small misting water bottle this weekend and even though he loves water (he'll jump in the shower with us), it seems to be helping with his reactivity. It only took 5 minutes of training with it in the house with a tab leash while he was reacting jealousy with the cat. We don't even have to use it, just put our hand on it when we see a trigger approaching and he looks at us instead of barking/lunging.
Quite the read. They are crazy smart but they are genetically wired for something as it sounds like you know. You may be able to lessen some of that behavior your dog was born with but it will never , ever be extinguished 💯. Just management and boundaries by teaching him what he can and can't instinctively go after. Sounds like you're doing very good!

So topic idea for you guys. AKC, the good and the bad. So, like people will bring up dogs like the English and French bulldogs and question why the standard for the breed requires possibly unhealthy traits. Also the whole concept of if being a "registered" breeder would make you necessarily a better one. And their training recommendations.
I love the weekly long videos, but if it's too much for you guys, I'm okay if it's every other week. I do love the long format because of my farm job, but I'll support you no matter what.

Yep. They need to have a solid recall even when fully distracted and when engaged in prey drive or play drive. Some exercises I do with my GSD to keep her recall sharp is to amp her up for play drive throw the ball while telling her to go get it and midway recall her back. She breaks off the chase and comes back then I tell her to go get the ball.

Yes "Go Get Method" is excellent and I've used it on my 2.5 year old Labradooble since a puppy. He has excellent recall except when there's potential food involved. But he's 12 out of 10 food obsessed. At dog park I take him off leash and he's free to explore. When I say come he does and always gets a treat. The exception is there an outdoor cafe 100 away. If he gets smell of burgers/bacon he runs to cafe, ignores my calls, mooches for food and won't return. I then have to go get him, put him on leash and return to where I was. He'll do same wherever there's potential food around and he's off leash. I want him to come instantly every time he's called when off leash. How do I correct a very food obsessed young dog.

only a few minutes in but oh my god this is the video i’ve been waiting for. my boy knows so many commands, but just ignores me. he usually trudges over to me, at his own pace (when i tell him to come back to the car when he’s off leash at the beach). he’s over a year old. god i hope you have some wisdom in this video.
Hey guys, I think it would be a cool idea for you to answer a question from the POD each week that you feel like would be applicable to a majority of listeners, and that could tie into the "dog training" portion of the podcast that week. Like, for instance, say a person (who may or may not be me) has two intact male dobermans who are less than year apart in age and the younger dog is clearly more dominant. How would you suggest the owner deal with the inevitable skirmishes that come about as the young dog is asserting his dominance with the older dog? I think that would be a cool segment that could engage the listeners and help with dog training questions at the same time. Love the podcast, (especially Eric saying "we are LIVE" every week - and your interactions with each other) it's all great. -Tricia L. (BTW -I vote for a weekly podcast, and it could be shorter if that helps you guys out).
I would watch either way. But if every other week would mean possibly more dog videos that would be great too. Just do what you need to do. Because if you try to do a little bit of everything then everything will suffer if it's to much at once. True pod people would probably agree. Quality over quantity.

The lady that sent you the long email question illustrates the exact reason she is having behavior problems with her dog. The fact that she doesn’t understand the complexity of fixing behavior issues and that it’s probably more about her and her toxic relationship with her dog than it is about the dog itself. And then she’s mad because you choose not to participate in a useless time wasting exercise with her! Wow a great example of level one unconscious incompetence. Larry Krohn got a similar complaint from someone at one of his seminars for not answering emails. He took out his phone and showed 60,000 unopened emails on one of 3 accounts and he’s probably not as popular as you.
I think people fail to understand that if they paid attention to all the free info out there on dog training (obviously hove to sort through some sh*t info) that they would find if they tried any of it they may be able to work through most problems.
Everyone wants a quick fix and that's not how things work sometimes unfortunately. I see it as you have to know what makes each dog tick either by breed research or being around them and then work from there. Obviously a little hard when it's a mix but ...

The difference between a 2 year old child and a 4 month old or older dog, is most of us can outrun a child, but not a dog. Long lead on the dog is imperative.
The structured segments is a good idea. I enjoy the tangents you two wander down in your casual conversations mixed into the pod topic. The longer form pod allows you two to get comfortable and leads to more interesting conversation.
Good luck with the new program. For Podcasts you can experiment with length and stick to what works best, you'll know in a few months. As far as verbiage, I think 'discovered' is best used to imply you've found something. These original methods were created due to work and process. I'd say they were invented or created. Again, wishing you the best.
He invented his methods by discovering what works and what doesn't work with over ten thousands dogs, but the methods he has developed that include breed specific nuances were not discovered.

A lot of podcasts use companies that act as agents and get a portion ad revenue. Otherwise you can contact companies, you get turned down a lot. I would start with ones that sponsor other podcasts.
Would you please discuss looking for a trainer? You kind of have as far as ones who work with aggressive dogs.
Do you recommend having puppies attend basic obedience to be around other dogs and distractions? (even if you don’t need training help)

Oh, can we discuss some dog trainers and their "packages". I've been looking for a trainer to help me with one issue that could probably be dealt with in an hour. All I'm finding are packages like 20 day board and train $$$$, 9 lessons for $$$, etc. I don't want to buy an entire package when I need just an hour or two. I wish I was closer to y'all because I just need my dog evaluated by someone more experienced with dogs than me and coach me on how to fix his reactivity. It's highly likely that all he needs is the repetition on being corrected when lunging at a person or dog, which I can't provide. Only selling "packages" is like the teacher telling you that your essay must be 1,000 words. Maybe I'll do a video conference with Joel or something.

Joel, I first saw a form of the doorway method (personally) seen this from Brad Pattison. He uses every threshold that way and stairs. I can leave my doors and everything wide open and my dog just waits and looks at me or lays inside the doorway. He will never be on the stairs at the same time as a kid or passing an adult. Even when hes ahead of you if say hes on them already hell stay still until youre ahead. This was #1 for all the reasons and cause my mother in law got her collarbone broken by a dog blowing through her on the stairs years ago. Its so dangerous shes lucky she had broken anything else.
Yea the whole deal about recall, I agree, I'm saying it once it's not a game after that. That is a lost art in the animal and child world, that's why YOUR busy and needing recruits all over the country. It's also why there are too many grown up children, or child adults that cry about everything and are sensitive as hell when they don't get their way. Not enough discipline in this world, everyone thinks discipline is hitting or beating, no it's the seriousness of when I say something I'm not playing around!
My wife said her dad use to say when she acted up "you better shape up or you will get a thrashing" she says to this day that was enough for her to stop whatever she was doing because she never knew what a thrashing meant, and didn't want to find out.
Whereas my dad use to tell me he would knock my teeth out of my mouth all the time, I got spankings but never actually had my teeth knocked out which caused me to eventually take what he said with a grain of salt lol. I always said if I have children I would never say something I WONT follow through with, because it shows weakness.

My dogs 14 months now and Iv trained his recall with treats and like what was said he basically use to flip me off Iv been trying this and he comes back with his head in hand and fed up but he still comes back lol.

My German Shepherd is very loyal and obedient. He wants to please you! My Australian Shepherd is another story. I got him at a year old. He is now twenty four months old. I am the third owner. He has a mind of his own and is a lot of work. He is coming around and is getting better with consistency. The Border Collies and Aussies I have had in the past were quick obedient learners. I have hope for my current Aussie.
Love high drive dogs. They can require a lot of energy to keep up with and train however once they have been trained correctly they are just so eager to please. I’ve had border collies, Dobermans, Boxers and now I have my German Shepherd that I trained to be my wife’s service dog.

Loved the partnership talk. After my cancer stressed our marriage in our late 30s we made a pact after to have sex 3x per week-super helpful. That was 17 years ago. Don’t always make the 3x but still strive for it-intimacy matters.

I have a texas heeler. So half aussie shepherd and half blue heeler. Both parents are akc paper holders so no other breeds mixed in. She came from a cattle farm where 2 neighboring cattle dogs had a litter. She's 1 yo in 2 days. We've had tons of training and trips to the dog park almost daily for the last 8 months. Tons of walking and socializing. But she's one stubborn pup who loves to play the dominance game. Never knew female dogs humped like crazy til now lol. She did great with commands until about 9 mo old. Now at a year she acts like she doesn't know what sit means. She needs the ability to run but I can't get a reliable recall to let her off leash outside of the dog park. After tons of headache and failed training attempts I ordered an e-collar. It comes in 2 days. Any advice would be amazing lol

2:39 yes. Exactly! This is still happening with my dog/s. 18 mo. old RR -Grrr! Just today. And then I go to go get him, and then it becomes the game he runs away, and finally the fifth time that I am yelling and telling him come here, he knows how angry I am. I get a hold of his collar, and then he’s pulling away from me. I am beyond angry. And then I feel like any teachable moment is lost. Because then the dog is only focused on my anger and I am as well.
If you get angry you are projecting the exact wrong energy to get your dogs trust and respect and to come to you. I never (almost) get angry because when my dog is not giving me the behavior that I want I know whose at fault (never the dog). In this case you are giving your dog too much freedom to soon before he is ready. You need to have total recall with him at varying levels of distraction when it can easily be enforced by long line, ecollar etc before you put him in a situation where he might fail and you’re unable to enforce it. Then you’re training him to ignore you.
I learned long ago to relax before any dog walking training etc. If I had a bad day I got in the habit of chilling out before walking etc because if the dogs were just doing normal stuff and I was irritated it just fed down the leash and the whole experience sucked. Hard to focus when you're focused on being pissed from a crap day. Just reset then do the dog thing is what I try to practice

Beware that any major raw brand is by regulation going to have to use hpp. A process that sounds pretty harmless but removes the beneficial bacteria so important for gut health one of the main benefits of feeding raw to begin with. So although you could argue it’s still a lot better than kibble it’s no where near as healthy as diy raw done correctly. So promoting this type of product without disclosing the huge drawback of poor gut health is as misleading in it’s own way as the kibble companies.

Don’t know what processes are used for freeze dried, never considered feeding it since I feed raw so never researched it.

Joel's philosophy on training dogs and raising children is spot on with the Bible. Proverbs 22:6
"Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it." His recall method makes sense. And that's the problem with people who criticize your recall method, it's the same for dog owners and some parents. They want to have the cuteness without putting the time in to train them.
Along with the marital situation and finding time for intimate things, I'll never forget my sister telling me about her and her husband sneaking off while the kids were watching a movie, only to have their oldest daughter (jokingly) pound on the door and ask, "What are you guys doing, having sex in there?" ROFL Which of course killed the mood.
While I love having the podcast every week, I would completely understand if you two had to cut back. You’ve both got a lot of stuff going on, I’m sure.
My dog is a lerge mix breed, used to have a great recall trained, but now he is 2 1/2, getting older and maturing, we live on an open farm surrounded by deer, bears, fox, you name it, and he is starting to ignore my COME when he is on a sniffing bender. he comes back after a few. He does not run away, but he ignores my first command AT TIMES. I used the go get method, it was good, but after a week or two he starting moving (to escape my grab )away so could not grab him. open land, not fenced in. Suggestions? he is perfect in a fenced in yard area, but when out this new behavior is popping up. Hillary

I see the difficulty though. If he knows his commands and chooses to say "later bro," then it's intentional disobedience that needs to be corrected when he returns. Dogs usually come back with their ears down, tail tucked when they intentionally disobeyed their master. Sounds like you may need to spend much more time reinforcing the command with a 100% recall goal, no matter what.
Seriously though, please listen to his entire explanation. He gets thousands of emails and comments. If you want his advice, then hire him so he can pay his bills. This is what he does for a living.

Ok how about we get rid of the “asking” dogs or children to do something, because when we “ask” them they have a choice to do want they want to do and when they choose not to do what we want them to do, we can’t get angry, because we simply asked them opposed to if we tell them to do something and they don’t do what we tell them to do, then we can give them the consequence because they are disobeying a command not a request. 😉
If my dog is doing the zoomies, I would better not to yell “Come” in this situation, I should train the dog when I’m sure I can go get him, instead of go chase him, is it correct?
I think that depends on how old your dog is and what breed it is. In general it's best to allow any dog to get "penned up energy" out in a controlled way before the dog will be most apt to give you its undivided attention in training. But some of the best training intervention I've seen was when Joel can snatch a dog out of the air in mid-zoomie mode 😂
But you absolutely need to have 100% obedience in zoomie no mode.
Just reminded me of a time when my 1 year old black lab was super excited to get a rabbit he saw in his fenced yard. I opened the door and gave him his release command and he went on a full, all out chase. Chased that rabbit around the garage at least twice, gaining ground with every step and just when he was about to take it, I yelled "Jake!" Without hesitation, he stopped and looked right at me for orders. I said "come" and be happily heeled. Most dogs love to make their owner happy and they gotta know that you're the boss, no matter what, but also that you love em.
