  • My new lantern has arrived and it is time to get it fired up! I checked all the parts and made sure that they were in order and got the petroleum and priming alcohol set out. The glowing part of these types of lanterns consists of a glowing mantle, which is a soft cloth sock before first use. It gets attached to the lantern and ignited, which burns the cloth and leaves a very fragile membrane which becomes incandescent the heat generated by the burning petroleum gas.

Here's a video of this preparation process and first ignition of the classic Petromax HK500 lantern.

Great lantern, literally started my new one about 10mn ago...
Having been brought up in rural France in the 80's, riding an old Vélo-Solex, I never thought I'd ever use a lamp with... a carburettor in it!!!
    Stay warm, best regards,

It is true that most people think of light production as a silent and clean affair, but the Petromax sounds like a small jet engine firing up!

Why would you not use the pre-heater? Isn’t that what’s it’s designed for?
