As long as you tend to be a tricky and creative defender, the barbed wire choice would be highly tactical in several 'Smoke + X' combos for using the cannisters to make chemical hells instead of just denying attacks which makes longer times for check/rotate/flank maneuvers. I used the idea thousands of times with Ela, Melusi, Frost, Lesion and even Clash if you're coordinated properly with your teammate.
Yeah choosing your secondary gadget is always dependent on the site, your role and what your team mates have 🙌🏼

In Astro you can shotgun the floor next to the globe in the corner to help keep people from taking the stairs. If I happen to be looking somewhere else when they take stairs (and shoot cam) I'll smoke the stairs from behind desk and wait until they commit to the push or fall back to the landing where I can shoot them from above without being contested. Adding a Lesion on the landing is basically free real estate because you get the audio cue and they always stop right there in your line of sight. Just don't make the hole too big, just a little strip between the corner and the unbreakable fat joist is just enough to see everything you need to while making it very inconspicuous from below.
If you see someone trying to do this to you via drone or call out just frag from below.

Smoke is the OG GOAT. I play him a little passively but still area denial. On Oregon (basement) I stand bottom of the stairs on Freezer and put prox. mines on top of the stairs and below the stairs. If the alarm at the top goes off, I round the corner with the shotty and get a free kill. If I see that the entire team is pushing from Freezer then I throw and detonate a gas grenade before retreating into site. I listen out for the second alarm (below stairs) and throw and detonate another gas grenade.
I've been doing this with head holes on right side of freezer (right if your in freezer) to see into sight (left side reinforced). Also if you barriacde the door at the top of the stairs you can see out into the hallway through the bottom.

Today i was playing really badly. Both times on defend as Aruni i got zero kills. Dying really quickly etc. after some good rounds as attackers i decided to play smoke. Immediately got 3 kills easily

If you commit to learning her she’s one of the best roamers in the game. She can waste a ton of time and utility, but you need a well coordinated team to get the most out of her.
I haven't done Clash yet but I will do. The key with Clash is to not get too aggressive and just literally annoy attackers and waste time. I see too many Clashes constantly zapping and then get pushed. Just be patient.

I know you gave props to the test server but varsity showed the player count and it was like 50 players who played it. They didn’t go through with it because people demanded them not. I think it should stay on the test server and until they get enough data to make a significant answer also who really pushing into their smoke like that?
The whole R6 subreddit was spammed with complains about the nerf, so that's more likely a reason y they reversed it. And I'm the Smoke player playing in the gas.

Also knowing when to use the smokes helps. Also you've gotta know the site setup as most Smoke/Mute players will be making the rotates and lines of sight etc
