  • This is a murder ballad waltz, and a particularly beautiful melody. A great tune to play at jams and sing harmony to. He kills her in three different ways-Poison, Stabbing, and then drowning. Please excuse my mistake in the video, I said that order wrong! Oh well-you can try to get everything right but it's so hard! :)
My favorite version is by the Kossoy Sisters with Erik Darling

The banjo I'm playing is a Bart Reiter open-back banjo that I bought in Kansas at
Mass Street Music. I love this banjo!

LYRICS to DOWN IN THE WILLOW GARDEN
    G C
    Down in the willow garden
    G Em
Where me and my love did meet
    G C
It was there, we sat a courting
    G D7 G
My love dropped off to sleep
    C G C
I had a bottle of burgundy wine
    G Em
Which my true love did not know
    G C
And there I poisoned that dear little girl
    G D7 G
    Down under the banks below.
I stabbed her with my dagger
    Which was a bloody knife
I threw her into the river
    Which was a dreadful sight
    My father often told me
That money would set me free
If I would murder that dear little girl
    Who's name was Rose Connely
Now he sits by his old cottage door
    Wiping his tear dimmed eye
Now he waits for his own dear son
    Upon the scaffold high
My race is run beneath the sun
Hell is now waiting for me
For I did murder that dear little girl
    Who's name was Rose Connelly

Hi Hilary, this is an amazing rendition of this old, old murder ballad. Also amazing is the fact that this gent didn't have any morals. He must have come from wealth to have "burgundy wine" and not just some peasant swill, not to mention a sabre, also a symbol of status. But if they were lovers, why would he not just abandon her after doing the you know what to her, as was often the case from wealthy squires in those days (?). Alas, this gent met his doom for murder of that " dear little girl, whose name was Rose Connelly".(Connlee?). Who could not love a gal with a name like that? Tim O'Brien's version is also quite touching, with his Mandolins. Thanks, my friend, for this banjo version. If I ever get my banjolin finished, I will play some version of this great old song at a jam, no doubt. Peace, dear lady-- great video and thanks. Bob in Montana

Hilary I love your videos . I play guitar and mandolin by ear, but could never wrap my head around the banjo. My wife suggested I buy a banjo and try to learn to play. I've watched other videos, but still no good. Since watching your videos everything is starting to click. I'm in my late sixties and am enjoying learning and actually making progress. Thanks you for your instructional talent.
