211 Season Finale with Alison Brown!
Source:
www.podbean.com/eau/pb-229n5-161b645
This is the Season Finale! And my mind is blown hearing Alison Brown talk about her banjos and what she’s playing on the road. We chat about her music, making records, producing, re-issuing records and the vision for her band. We nerd out about how we like the piano and banjo combo.
What she likes to convey with her music, and how she goes beyond how the banjo is usually portrayed. We listen to her track Sweet Sixteenths with Sierra Hull on mandolin, and the Alison Brown Quartet.
We talk about Compass records and why it started and she gives advice for getting over your nerves.

Yeah, I cried. Solid cover
Stelling ,Stellar!
Sounds very close to Shortnin' Bread.
Hi Hilary, I just recently bought your beginner Clawhammer book and have been enjoying playing the tunes in it. Thank you for posting these videos; they have been an excellent learning aid for me!
And fuk the internet
I didn't no I had an email. Fuk ashlie
my favorite song
Beautiful
sehr gut
Just getting started learning to pick. This is so beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing, I could listen to your music all night!
When I land my thumb on the fifth string and pick it straight back up it sounds the fifth string. It’s quiet but noticeable. No matter how lightly I connect with the fifth string it makes a sound. Any ideas?
Very nice, thanks Hilary.
Thanks for posting! Reminds e of the song “Pretty Little Girl” that I have on the Goodbye Girls CD.
Magic the melody comes out of the movement of hand over Banjo
Great lesson, it's a squirrelly tune to nail down
Thanks. From Melbourne Australia. Beautifully played.
Like to hear sandy river belle
wow this is great! thank you for doing this and sharing it!
just beautiful! I've never heard this song before today, found Dan Tyminski doing it and you and love it! I'm a long time banjo player myself, trying to get it back after laying it down 30+ years.
of ALL the clawhammer lessons on youtube, you're the one that does it for me, Thank you!
I've never heard a song so beautiful in standart G tuning. I'm learning this today.
Big fan of Adams really loved this. If I had the chance to suggest anything to Adam I’d ask him to study morris dancer music, that’s where Irish traditional over the past 200 years has grown from. Many thanks for this and much love from Northern Ireland UK 🇬🇧 👍
Howdy Hilary,, Can you share how many yrs you been playing now??😊😊😊 Thanks, just curious is all.. Doing a fine job..😊
Howdy ms Hilary,, Could you play a long 10 minute version of this and a song called Sally in the Garden. An extended version of both songs if you could please. Your new fan. brother Harvey
Wow! Thanks
Is this the same chords as the iron mountain string band version?? It sounds like it but I could be mistaken. The energy in that song is amazing
Your videos are absolutely perfect. If you take requests, I’d love to see one of these on Let Me Fall.
I will try to get to that one! Great tune!
pickin' in Pickens!
Tuning is GCGCD, not GCDCD as description says
Great! I was just reminiscing about the Dubl Handi gig in Pembrokeshire, Wales many years ago which has brought me back to you! 🪕
Hi Hilary, I love your style and appreciate you taking the time to share your skills with us. Are you in Double C tuning on the video with the dancers made 4 years ago at Beehive productions? It is absolutely fantastic. I'm trying my best to follow along, but besides the first string, the rest doesn't sound right. Are you in Double C? Thank you so much.
In that Beehive video I am in F tuning! Almost like Double C but the 3rd and 5th string are F's
Wonderful lesson. Thank you so much Hilary. I was really struggling with the timing on this one, and you helped me immensely. I also love the video of you with your band and the dancers. So inspired.
SUPERB!
You will forever be the lady that taught me Cumberland Gap! thank you!!
Awww
Just beautiful! You give us something to aspire to...Thank you.
The sequence of this tune is very like the Mason's Apron an old Irish traditional tune. Great stuff!
Awesome. Glad you’re back ❤🎉
Are you twocentsinthetill???
A very interesting interview with an interesting person, (which I actually followed for quite a while, on CZcams). 🎶🪕🎶 Few people today have such dedication to highlighting this old style music as him, I think! Also interesting to learn about the banjo's connections to Ragtime music, and Scott Joplin's banjo-playing parents!
I’m new to Clawhammer banjo and this is really helpful! Thank you!
You have great talent and exemplify the best musical spirit I associate with mountain banjo. Your joy in playing is infectious!
Ah, very cool. They're one of my favorite contemporary banjoists, and eat up any content of theirs that I can find.
This conversation was wonderful. Cathy is a national treasure and has helped so many people on their musical odyssey. You are a great interviewer Hilary.
Ant frailing or clawhammer just so old timey love it !!!!!
high production value
Omg Lisa Leblanc! I'm from Quebec and I started learning the banjo last year and naturally started listening to a lot of her stuff since she is very popular here in Quebec. <3
Wow first Meridith Moon comes out with a new song (on the Goldtone promotional channel) then HH comes out with new material? It must be Christmas
What make?
