  • Nigerian Woman Faces 7 Years in Prison over Facebook Review | Vantage with Palki Sharma
    A woman in Nigeria faces up to 7 years in prison over a negative review on Facebook. Chioma Okoli is a 39-year-old entrepreneur based in Lagos. Last September, she put up a post on Facebook where she slammed a local tomato puree. She said the tomato mix was too sweet. This set off a storm on Facebook, and led to the Nigerian police arresting her a week later. She has been charged under Nigeria's cybercrime law. She is being accused of hatching a conspiracy to instigate people against the Tomato Puree maker. She faces 7 years in jail, and a fine of up to 3 million dollars over the bad review.

    • @danielo.3737
      @danielo.3737 Před měsícem +9

      Drugs is not a Nigerian problem. Although, unfortunately, Nigerians are notorious outside of Nigeria for indulging in drugs related crimes in foreign countries; this is because there is a demand for drugs in those countries hence the people see it as an opportunity to illegally make quick bucks.
      Hence, in actuality, Nigerians selling drugs in foreign countries is simply a reflection of the poor morality inherent in the citizens of the said country. It's simply a case of demand and supply: where there is no demand, there will be no supply. For instance, there are no drugs issues in Nigeria because there is no demand for such substances.
      Moreso, people are very swift to point fingers at Nigerians, when the reality is that "provided the demand persists, there will always be supply."
      In conclusion: selling drugs in Nigeria will probably warrant harsher sentences than what the tomato reviewer unjustly got; possibly even the death penalty. And this is rarely ever heard of due to the lack of demand.

They're exploiting the most vulnerable of society! Don't take the high horse and make it sound like nigerians are superior. If they were they would stay in their own country! Instead they go out into the world and exploite the most vulnerable! Check your superiority complex.

    The problem with making "hate" crime laws is that they can be broadly interpreted and applied in the courts. A real victim has no chance, and big companies take advantage.

    • @Ria-sd2ex
      @Ria-sd2ex Před měsícem +2

      Well, it's not a problem with the law(s) itself, but the people who are in charge, working in bad faith to specifically harm the people these laws should protect. That way, when they say hate crime laws don't work they can reference the ridiculousness of this case and seem correct in their assertion.

      International awareness doesn't matter as long as many Nigerians themselves are either unaware or don't care that things happen in their country. If anything "International awareness" makes many countries _less_ likely to deal with problems. Instead of admitting to the problems where they live and solving them, they'll just whine about how unfair it is and desperately try to deflect the criticism by pointing to problems elsewhere in the world.
