The Powerful Meaning of St George | Joseph Campbell and Jonathan Pageau

  • Exploring history, myth and meaning in the story of Saint George. A story of huge cultural significance, George of Lydda was the young 4th century Christian martyr who apparently fought against a dragon and gave his life in refusing to renounce his Christian faith. We may think the dragon story is now a cliché, but here I offer just my opinions on what I make of it, touching on Joseph Campbell's abstractions of the heroic type and Jonathan Pageau's ideas/observations on attention.

Modernity has left us with an obsession of the newness of things, not the trueness of things. Love that.

Wow, that line is an amazing distillation of the spirit of our age.

That is an amazing quote! So true! We have an obsession with being original, where is the ancients never did.

@@felixwalne3494 yes, we have an obsession with being 'original' and also with being 'authentic' which is a euphemism for being led by our feelings.

"The fact that everything has been debunked and put under the microscope is perhaps the very reason we find ourselves in our own lives overanalyzing everything...". It's so refreshing to hear someone younger expressing what you have in this video, and that sums up the difficulty in my (no doubt longer) journey as well as that of many others. Lovely video.

Love this. Thank you. My son's name is George, named after St. George, and his patron saint is St. George of course. He's only 5 months old and such a joy.

I was in despair that philosophy and theology were dead in the water. Gone! A remnant of past ideologies, lost. Thank you for showing me that it is alive and well in the generations who will inherit.

St. George is my confirmation Saint. I had a sword tattooed on my arm 3 years ago. I was confirmed in my Catholic faith 1 1/2 years ago. Even before I became Catholic, I wanted to be Saint George when I grew up. I’m 25 now (nearly 26), and I still want to be Saint George when I grow up. I can do it (and if not, at least I’ll try) and you can try too.
Head up lads. Keep after it.

  • @jaime8318

I suspect that the story of St. George is Christianity borrowing from older stories that pre-date Christianity. I also suspect that the dragon is symbolic of something else and not actually a dragon.

Diocletian was the head of the Dragon. The Christian persecution was resisted by the Holy Martyers.
Saint George was a slayer of that beast.

Oh stop the pretencoois crap everyone. Theres nothing to look further than whatsbin front of you, a dragon. He slayed an actual dragon. All aincent cultures knew of the dragon. Inca aztec temples are with the serpant dragon aincent china also. Archeologists found dragon fossils and from the 15th century latin drawings from the east of dragons fighting with tigers. Go look up your history people. Its not a coincidence all cultures knew of the dragon and its not symbolic, wake up people
