The Powerful Meaning of St George | Joseph Campbell and Jonathan Pageau

- Exploring history, myth and meaning in the story of Saint George. A story of huge cultural significance, George of Lydda was the young 4th century Christian martyr who apparently fought against a dragon and gave his life in refusing to renounce his Christian faith. We may think the dragon story is now a cliché, but here I offer just my opinions on what I make of it, touching on Joseph Campbell's abstractions of the heroic type and Jonathan Pageau's ideas/observations on attention.

Modernity has left us with an obsession of the newness of things, not the trueness of things. Love that.
"Modernity has left us with an obsession with the newness of things, not the trueness of things."
Wow, that line is an amazing distillation of the spirit of our age.
Thank you.
That is an amazing quote! So true! We have an obsession with being original, where is the ancients never did.
@@felixwalne3494 yes, we have an obsession with being 'original' and also with being 'authentic' which is a euphemism for being led by our feelings.
"The fact that everything has been debunked and put under the microscope is perhaps the very reason we find ourselves in our own lives overanalyzing everything...". It's so refreshing to hear someone younger expressing what you have in this video, and that sums up the difficulty in my (no doubt longer) journey as well as that of many others. Lovely video.
Thank you.
Love this. Thank you. My son's name is George, named after St. George, and his patron saint is St. George of course. He's only 5 months old and such a joy.
That's wonderful. Wishing him the very best. I have a nine month old daughter and it's a very special (albeit tiring!) time.
Thank you God, thank you Jesus, thank you St. George .
I was in despair that philosophy and theology were dead in the water. Gone! A remnant of past ideologies, lost. Thank you for showing me that it is alive and well in the generations who will inherit.
Amazing. I feel blessed to have come across your channel. Your story to Christianity is similar to mine. I look forward to seeing your channel grow.
Thank you.
St. George is my confirmation Saint. I had a sword tattooed on my arm 3 years ago. I was confirmed in my Catholic faith 1 1/2 years ago. Even before I became Catholic, I wanted to be Saint George when I grew up. I’m 25 now (nearly 26), and I still want to be Saint George when I grow up. I can do it (and if not, at least I’ll try) and you can try too.
Head up lads. Keep after it.
Fantastic insight and video! Thank you for producing it.
I really enjoyed this video, for both the historical information and the philosophical contentions made. Well done good sir
This is great. I'm painting the Icon of St. George and this is inspiring.
Well done
Keep fighting the good fight brother
Truism: not all Christians are the best of people. But the best of people are always Christians. In my unapologetic opinion
Oliver you're awesome! Thanks for starting your channel and sharing this incredible content. You're also very easy to listen to as your insightful and succinct. Your video about 'Its a wonderful life' I've shared with a few friends who valued your insight and guidance! Keep up the good work!
Thanks very much!
Thanks for this and all glory to Father in Heaven for St George 🙏🏼❤️
Μπραβο! Christ and St George be with you, always!
Brilliant !!!!!!!!!!
Thanks brother. Pray for us.
Great video!
Excellent presentation of a story our leaders seem keen to repress. Came upon your video as I noticed the dragons at the entry points to the City of London, how relevant this fable is too today. Very well articulated, enjoy your day.
Good Job brother in faith!
Brilliant video, thank you!
That was great thank you
Well done Oliver ❤️
Solid ,Oliver.
Why the hero is always represented as the most muscular, athletic, symmetrical man on earth?
Because that reflects most on that which is most Good, Genius, Beautiful, Perfect and Just. That is the most Truth(ful) and wonderful, to be the Highest one could ever (or could not ever), so that we may dare to aspire and walk still on the path of the Hero
because it looks better than a bloke with a handbag on his arm
Because that is the peak of human physical capability.
Well done, Oliver! Thank you for sharing. Keep up the good work.
Well done! I venerate and petition St George daily. 👏☦️
how refreshing you are
Good Commentary
Thanks
Eloquent. We are sharing...

I'm a painter and no, I wouldn't paint the Tuscan landscape with the same colors as I do the English.
Why is St. George's Day on April 23?
It’s the day on which St George was martyred.
I suspect that the story of St. George is Christianity borrowing from older stories that pre-date Christianity. I also suspect that the dragon is symbolic of something else and not actually a dragon.
Some say he was posted to Egypt with his Legion, where he slayed a huge troublesome Nile Crocodile 🐊
Funny how your channel right now have 666 subscribers, I don't know if I should be the one to break it
Beloved Saint George is also compared to be Hizir in Sufism.
Diocletian was the head of the Dragon. The Christian persecution was resisted by the Holy Martyers.
Saint George was a slayer of that beast.
Oh stop the pretencoois crap everyone. Theres nothing to look further than whatsbin front of you, a dragon. He slayed an actual dragon. All aincent cultures knew of the dragon. Inca aztec temples are with the serpant dragon aincent china also. Archeologists found dragon fossils and from the 15th century latin drawings from the east of dragons fighting with tigers. Go look up your history people. Its not a coincidence all cultures knew of the dragon and its not symbolic, wake up people
Oh stop rabbiting on like a monotonous hypnotist and make some sense.
Wonderfull video.
Thank you.
He killed Yahweh and freed the people of Palestine.
