  • In the northwest of Nepal, men scale the vertiginous rock faces of the Himalayas to gather the honey of wild bees. These expert climbers risk their lives every spring at an altitude of more than 3,000 metres where they face the giant Apis Laboriosa bees, the biggest species on the planet.
Moti, a young boy, will climb the cliffs for the first time. He’d like to become a honey hunter like his father. He seems full of confidence, but he must exhibit both patience and endurance to become a true honey hunter. His enthusiasm is a good sign for the continuation of this disappearing activity. But will he be able to step into his father’s shoes?

    Direction: Jérôme Ségur
    Production: ZED - Manuel Catteau
With: Moti prasad chhantel, Bal bahadur chhantel, Chandra bahadur chhantel, Belmaya chhantel, Pa bahadur chhantel

Like other Slice documentaries, this one is very well done. It's almost like I am right there with Moti on the cliff with the bees. Great camera work and excellent editing. It's easy to forget how hard and dangerous it is to get some of this footage. And the Nepalese villagers are truly impressive in their courage and modesty, and not just the men. The women and children are amazing too. It's good to see that some of the villagers realize that leaving the village and going abroad isn't necessarily better. They seem to have good common sense and trust that what has worked for their forebears will work them too.

I think they may be enraged if they knew who much pure honey costs and the risk to obtain it not as deadly. He literally sold all that honey for $60 dollars to have it exported essentially to Australia England and Singapore. The distributor should be the rich one because of his profit not because he has ropes to continue his deadly and dying craft. If I could get their information I would help them buy that house from the mother’s brother-in-law and send the kids to school. The children can then later employ others to sustain this method of harvesting if they choose. Money is not really necessary but the world demands that we all have to rely on it which is a crying shame. They also reminds me of "the last of the mohicans".
