Lou Gramm (Foreigner, Black Sheep) joins us this week to share his story of growing up as a New York kid with aspirations in music, to fronting one of the most iconic rock groups Foreigner, and being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Lou shares the origins of classic songs like ‘Feels Like the First Time’ and ‘Juke Box Hero’ along with the push and pull that came with record label interactions during his climb in the industry.
We also talk about lessons learned opening up for KISS, meeting Mick Jones, and what caused him to put the rock n’ roll party lifestyle to rest.

I just finished listening to this episode and it was delightful. Lou definitely opened up and had so many great stories. I was surprised to hear that it took a long time for Foreigner to be part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Congratulations on his sobriety. Have a great week everyone!

I have a fond memory of meeting Lou, years ago, helping him load a ladder into his SUV at the local Lowes where I worked part time. Such a wonderful spirit and a very kind person.

Cool to hear. I'm a day-one diehard Foreigner fan and I've been fortunate enough to talk briefly to Lou and Mick a handful of times after their shows. He always came across as such a humble, gentle soul and that's also a big part of why the fans love him so much. At one of their shows he remembered me from talking to him backstage after their previous show and his face lit up, smiled and then pointed at me when he came onstage. Later during the show he stuck the mic in my face to sing the chorus during Cold As Ice. It was pretty cool moment for me....love the guy!

Michael, thank you very much for this one! I remember hearing Foreigner for the first time when I was 8-10 years old. I think the tracks were Urgent, Cold as Ice, Double Vision and other masterpieces. Man, that was something completely new for me. My dad used to have an excellent taste in music and he instilled in me this love towards classic rock.

Truly one of the best episode, What a huge treat and what a legend and a beautiful soul Lou is ♥️ I have been a Foreigner
Fan since the first time I saw them in 1978 at the California Jam 2 in Ontario, California. I was 14 and Going to a concerts is truly magical, especially with Music that is a powerful force that can enter our souls and touch us in ways that are hard to describe and is a endless time capsule of great memories of joy that you can treasure for the rest of your life, also stories you can leave with your children and grandchildren. I have always loved all of Foreigners music and a huge fan of 70s 80s Music. I got to see Foreigner a few weeks ago at the Honda Center in Anaheim, it’s about time they got in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 🎶 they have deserved it a long time ago they Rock!! Thank you Michael for having Lou on your podcast you Rock!!

There is a video to the song READY OR NOT on CZcams it didn't go far because the record company backed off promoting Lous album out of fear that he would leave Foreigner back in 1987. Their loss . 11:17

Why not mention that he was diagnosed with a benign brain Tumor in 1997 that could have killed him, because it was in the center of his brain. He stated that Mick Jones had zero sympathy for his condition and treated him badly which started a rift between the two which had been building for some time. Mick Jones is all business and is just kinda cold by some accounts and acted like Lou’s condition was trivial so get over it. We need to get on with touring. The final break up came because of disputes over Royalties. Lou said that Mick trivialized Lou’s contributions to their songs they wrote together and would try to undercut him concerning the Royalties.

Foreigner's singer they have now is really good! Dude can hit notes, and he's first class chef!

Foreigners current singer is the 3rd singer Foreigner ever had. Johnny Edwards who sang on 1991s UNUSUAL HEAT was chosen over Mark Free (King Kobra) and the current guy Kelly Hansen (Hurricane ) in 1990. Yep, Hansen tried out for Foreigner twice . He replaced Gramm in 2005.

As true as it may be that Kelly Hansen definitely has a kick-azz voice. I recently went to the Foreigner, Styx & John Waite concert & all 3 bands sounded excellent. But it just wasn't the same vibe like it was back in the day except for John Waite who still had his mojo going on. The gripe I have with Foreigner that pissed me off is they're out there promoting a "Foreigner Farewell Tour." Yet, not one original member from Foreigner is even in the band now. Even though Kelly & whoever else have been doing the gig for quite awhile in the band. They're really nothing but a glorified tribute band who are acting & selling themselves as the real deal Holyfield, which is BS! Sorry, but you can't fake the funk. Just keep it a buck & don't try to be someone you're not, it's tacky.

@@216Numbskull The so called Foreigner "Farewell tour" is a joke. Recently it was reported/ revealed they are extending the "Farewell tour ". As true as it may be , it looks like shades of KISS who kept doing farewell tours and The Little River band who's still out there with No original members. 💰 💰 grab 2.0

I have to say, Please get rid of the stupid Jason Hockey Mask. All your guests have sit next to it and we have to look at it in the same frame and it’s a turn off. Who wants to look at that right next to Lou Grams face.

Sounds like Mick and Lou are both difficult people. "I Don't Want To Live Without You" is the best tune they've done. I'm a guitarist and I listen for guitar, but the keys are genius in that song. Bass, too. Doesn't sound like one of McCartney's lamer tracks to me. Just sayin'.
