Lou didn’t need foreigner… foreigner needed Lou!
Maybe True - but without Foreigner Lou would not have been very well known. This interview wouldn't exist. They are stuck (Foreigner & Lou) inextricably together.
Right, and Mick knew that too, Big time!!
Both men needed each other. Fact!!!
@@rafaelcarmany463Who knows?
They needed eachother. Like fire needs multiple components to burn. If Lou got 25% of I Want to Know What Love Is they both would have benefited. Mick's song, LOU's amazing vocals and contributions MADE IT WORK.
Foreigner would have been NOTHING without Lou.
Did you see the "Behind The Music" segment? Did you hear what Mick said about Lou's voice? Incredible!
Lou's vocals with Foreigner elevated that band beyond measure.
I cannot agree more. Nobody was singing and especially sounding like him.
Lou is a very nice man great singer and belongs in the Hall of Fame.
@@ozzyozzy2207 Absolutely
Your words cannot be debated
There would be No Foreigner without Lou Gramm
One of the Best Rock vocalist ever
Absolutely.
Agree
That’s right!
W O R D
Some of those notes he reaches. What a range! How did he not explode?
“Urgent”, “Jukebox Hero” “I don’t want to live without you”, what a voice man…
This man was/is Foreigner.
I want to know what love is .
@@Allguitarinfo Ya know what's interesting? Some of Lou's best vocals weren't the hits. They were the album cuts. Break it up, I'm gonna win, Heart turns to stone, Rev on the red line, so many others, the solo and Shadow King works were virtuoso level vocals.
And to think, Mick offered him a 95-5 split. What an ass.
Who wrote those songs
Foreigner sold more than 80 Million records. I guess kids today don’t understand what this means. Point being, it deserves the utmost in respect.
Oh believe me, we know!
Complaining about “kids today” just makes you sound like an out of touch boomer. When you were a kid did you care about music that was recorded 40 years ago? Exactly.
Someone needed to tell Mick, that there’s thousands of good guitar players, but only a handful of great lead singers.
True, 1000s of guitar players, but none of them can write songs like Mick did!
paranoid control freeks don't care about reality, only the fake world they create in their own mind matters to them . . for all micks efforts he destroyed his own legacy trying to destroy Lou's, 100 years from now if someone says "mick jones" folks will be like 'was he the guy that created the beatles?' 'the guy that played in Motley Cru?' on the other hand when Lou Gramms name is mentioned everyone's will say oh yea he was that powerhouse singer in that one band then went solo with Lou Gramm, yea man he is legend what a voice! . . sad music allows these types in there are so many too . . .rock on Lou! never ever be saddened how things went down, sometimes they have to go that way, you cemented your legendary status for sure, in Black Sheep, Foreigner, and Lou Gramm .. total legend, and to persevere all you did just shows how strong you really are . . you can leave here rest assured to did your best and succeeded in every way, then some.. your voice moved so many, comforted so many, got so many thru hard times and good times .. voice of the 70's 80's and 90's .. the hat trick!
"Facts" Mick Jones is BASIC... not even mentioned when talking about Great Rock Guitarists. Not on the same planet as: Steve Howe, Alex Lifeson, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, David Gilmour, SRV, Robin Trower, Steve Stevens, Andy Summers ( add tons more that are better than him ). Lou Gramm made Foreigner !!!
I think your definition of good guitar player differs from mine.
@@TracyGunzexactly my thought. Songs are the jewels , the singers are just American idol contestants without them.
Lou, you are a great singer and the force that propelled Foreigner. You are loved and respected by your fans.
Lou Gramm was the heart and soul of Foreigner.
Lou was the reason I liked the band. Lou could have made any band fantastic at that time.
Lou Gramm has one of the very best rock voices in the history of music. To me.....he MADE the band what it was.
You hit the nail on the head on that comment. Lou's voice is legendary and a down to earth guy. Lou is also from my hometown and is a classic car guy and has a nice collection of cars.
Not only did he MAKE the band, he will forever be THE VOICE of Foreigner.
Not a big fan of Foreigner, but yes absolutely, Gramm had one of the best voices to come down the pike. Gramm was every bit as important as Jones.
His voice was a LARGE part of the soundtrack to my generation (Gen-X). I came-of-age listening to that man sing 💓🥰
Glad you said, "to me,
Lou IS foreigner!!! Without that badass vocal you got nothing!
Lou's voice sold those albums.
It's that same old story with Steve Perry from Journey. Both Foreigner and Journey would have been second tear without the voices of Lou Gramm and Steve Perry. Two of the alltime greatest voices in rock history.
Second tier.
Tier.
As a trained vocal major, I worked in a lot of jazz, blues, country, and rock bands, and the six-string guitarists are all the same; a bunch of arrogant, self-righteous basement players. The only grounded, disciplined guitarists with character are those that are musically trained. Most are what I call "basement players". The basement is the only "team work training" that they have received, so they think they're the center of the world. And, as a lead-singer myself? They treat us like dirt and I have been in similar situations as Gramm. In the end, they suffer because of their arrogance.
Tier
Lou didn't need Mick, Mick needed Lou! Listen to Lou's early albums with Black Sheep! Songs, Paying Your Dues and No Worry No Pain are great! Lou was destined to be a star with or without Mick Jones!
Lou's vocals made that band, period. The fans aren't stupid; we know what's what!
Of course...glad you pointed that out..
Lou seems to be feeling better now than just a year or 2 ago. His manner of speaking has improved and his stutter isn’t as bad as it had gotten. Hopefully his overall health is improving as well. Great singer and a great guy! 👍😊
His memory isn't so good, though. He was struggling to recall who they fired after Head Games.
@@TheMICMusicInspirationChannelBut he remembered quite a lot besides that odd lack of recall. I know I can remember storylines better than names, personally.
He met all his fans in Edmonton Canada after a live outdoor summer show . Super nice guy and very modest ! (Needless to say no one asked about why he left foreigner ) Always wishing Lou well ! D .s .
I met Lou some years ago in Springville, Utah, with his band and he signed his book to me and we were able to talk as two men who survived brain tumor removals. It's not like there's a support group for suvivors and it was nice to talk about the challenges we still face everyday. Lou's very down to earth and a nice guy and I personally appreciated his personal time discussing our brain tumors. He's a legend and Foreigner's one ond only singer. Song Writer's Hall of Fame for Lou and Mick. R n R Hall of Shame...lol Cheers from Utah Lou and thank you!
Hey Mark. What a nice surprise to see your comment here. Lou Gramm is Foreigner.
yep.Lou's a good guy..humble , unassuming and real
@@MikaelLewisify Hey Uncle Mike
Few vocalists are immediately recognizable, but Lou is one of them. He set that band apart. We instrumentalists are replaceable 99% of the time.
Even though Lou did the bulk of the work on the song but being the gentleman he is he allowed Mick to claim a higher percentage yet until Lou felt so bad it was never good enough for Mick and finally Mick claimed about 95% of a song that gave them millions in royalties and Lou got nothing. Money can ruin the friendships of so many. When you already have so much, how much is enough. It seems there is never enough to satisfy evil selfish people until it destroyed one of the best rock bands in the world. I saw them 4x and loved them so much. They and Journey were my two favorites. Lou had one of the most powerful rock voices ever up until his brain illness. He worked so hard to make an amazing comeback. Quite a strong individual. God bless you Lou may the Lord watch over you and give you the health you need to continue.
English musicians have always been super greedy.
Lou Gramm is my favorite front guy of all time. I'm 73 and have seen almost everyone.
Cold As Ice was like nothing else when it can out - that piano intro is epic - so are the effects on the mics, bass and keyboards - so clean and driving
Yes, and it was the soundtrack of my high school days. We are truly lucky to have had this excellent music in our lives. And still do!
Lou Gramm is a very talented singer. Sometimes he is so underrated. Thank you for this fantastic interview!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Lou has NEVER been underatted!! That word is too "OVERUSED""!
He is not underrated, he is undercompensated!!!!
Lou is known as a great singer. The f’n word “Underrated” is horse 💩.
Lou Gramm. Living legend. Mick Jones destroyed Foreigner sadly. His greed and insecurities killed that amazing band. Very sadly
Just like Gene $immon$ ruined Ki$$!
I can’t believe Dolly Parton is in the Rock Hall of Fame and bands like Foreigner didn’t . No disrespect to Dolly but it’s wrong.
Pure BS Politics. It's not about legendary Rock FAN popularity or history. It's a $ making enterprise, and exclusionary. Say the wrong thing, or not liked in their inner circle, and you're out. It's basically a meaningless tourist attraction. However, Jones milked the band into a JOKE, all replacements, and so the true band may never get in now.
What's wrong with disrespecting her? She deserves disrespect. She may be a competent musician, but she's not a good person.
@@TheMICMusicInspirationChannel make a strong statement like that, and you have to back it up somehow. So,curious ... how is she not a good person. She's always being touted as being a philanthropist and helping disadvantaged people. Is she like a secret Satanist or something most don't know ? 😆 Please dish.
I’m happy to say they’re in now! Yay!
I’m not sure that being in the hof is something to aspire to.🤷♂️
What a kind man.
The Rock God he is, as if he didn't know.
Incredible to hear and watch him.
More of a fan now than I was before this interview.
Lou Gramm, please to meet you!
Foreigner was a part of the soundtrack of my youth. Brilliant music. Great memories. 😊
You are one of the best Rock vocalist we had in the 70’s . Your voice was all over the radio. A great talent and a great guy! Loved your story and honesty.
Dear Mr Lou Gramm
You say that you made nothing?
That is incredibly not true!
You made your voice stand out!
You made millions of fans! 💖
I have been a fan of yours for more years than I can count!
I thank you for every note that ever came out of your mouth! 🎶🎤
That first album still sounds awesome today, all these years later.
Lou I met you when I was 15 years old. We shook hands and had a small conversation many years ago. I didn’t realize then how important that was until years later. Genuinely amazing guy. I rock out to foreigner all the time
Thank god finally in Rock and roll hall of fame!!!!!!!!!!!
Always hard to hear the betrayals. Lou’s voice was such a distinct powerhouse. Song writing top tier.
Saw them once on the 4 tour and live…voice was mesmerizing.
Midnight Blue is my favorite and the signature sound of Lou Gramm in my opinion and Foreinger for me! Love Lou ❤🔥🎶
It was a classic!
I agree. Midnight Blue and Ready Or Not were two of my eighties jams, and they still hold up today! Mick made a big mistake imo
mine too mate
That WHOLE album was fire!!!!
I remember the first time I heard it on the radio and thinking “wow someone’s playing guitar just like Nils Lofgren!” - then I found out it was Nils!😎 Big fan of both Nils and Lou. Hard to believe Rochester would burn any of Lou’s albums but maybe I wasn’t paying attention at the time.
Lou is a true legend
What a great person ! Lou Gramm is one of the best vocalists and songwriters in the Rock World ! Foreigner do not deserve him ! Mick Jones : what a horrible and jealous person 😢 . Shame on him !!!
God bless you , Mr. Lou Gramm ! You are the best !!! ❤❤❤
I was in junior high when Foreigner come out. Star Rider remains and will forever remain one of my favorite songs.
Lou is a humble and gifted artist. Mick Jones knows damn well he was going nowhere without a real knockout vocalist. I think Lou was far more talented than others in his range. He will always have us on his side.
You are a very respectful and polite interviewer.
Headgames has been my favorite Foreigner album since the day it came out. The same great hooks you expect but with a slightly harder edge. One of the albums that are a hidden gem from that era.
I love lou with his Great Rock Voice and songs!
Great interview and Lou is in the top tier of the greatest rock vocalists! Head Games was HUGE when it was released in Connecticut! There were 3 rock stations in the state and they played the heck out of, dirty white boy, Head games, and Rev on the Red Line which is one of their best songs IMO. Head Games was on the adult/pop stations too. Every car at high school and keg parties was blasting their songs on the radio and in the cassette decks. This was also the point when they got the label of Jock rock. haha All the High School football players/jocks, cheerleaders and their GFs loved Foreigner.
One of the best belters on rock lead vocals and amazing balladeer. Rare combination.
Lou's the man..always was. I'd be livid.
Awesome interview. Lou is a terrific storyteller!
I remember hearing Foreigner on the radio in the 80’s and thinking at how incredible Lou’s voice was! Bless you sir!
First concert I went to was Foreigner 1981 they exploded a jukebox on stage I was 16 and they sounded just like the record it was sold out Norman Oklahoma..Back in the day Lou was tops as a vocalist ,live long be well Lou 🙌🏼🎤..
I didn't see that show, but I did see a bunch of shows at the LNC, in Norman before and after 1981.
@@gordonbaker410Did you by chance go to the Gino Vannelli concert at Lloyd Noble in the early 70s? I worked for Coach Barry Switzer at OU, so I had front row, center seats. Gino’s performance was INCREDIBLE! Talk about a powerhouse voice!! And Gino looked like a god on stage in all white. 😂 The girls were throwing themselves at him!
In my opinion he is the greatest rock and roll singer ever!! Period! I had the pleasure of meeting him back in 2013 after one of his shows in Toronto and getting his autograph on the book that I purchased about him. I will never forget that day. I met a true legend that night.
Midnight Blue was a great Lou Gramm solo song. As good as anything Foreigner did as a band. Underappreciated.
Easy now - I like the song as much as anyone but it wouldn't make their first , second or the 4th - just sayin
Foreigner albums were my youth. And Lou has and had one of the best voices in rock and roll. ✌️❤️🙏
I was in High school when Foreigner came out and the late night song for us was “Star Rider” . They were great.
... with Mick on Lead Vocals.
First two albums are in my top 10 best classic rock. I bought Double Vision the day it hit store shelves.
I saw Lou at the Mecum car auction in Kissimmee and spoke to him briefly about muscle cars. What a legend!
sensational rock voices of all time mr lou gramm
Thees is no Foreigner without lou Gramm - the image of lou, the voice and his contribution - simple ass !
Head Games is an awesome album!Bought it the day of release and was blown away by it.Listened to it for weeks.
I agree. My first album from them bought right when it came out. Loved the cover.
Ill Get Even With You, The Modern Day, The title track, Seventeen...the only song I don't care too much for is Blinded By Science otherwise 9/10
Their first 4 albums are Dynamite!! You literally can play them back to back to back to back and NEVER skip over a song.
@@newavatar2947Rev on the red line & Do what you like.
@@newavatar2947 Hey "ll Get Even With You, The Modern Day, Seventeen" Best songs. I was a vocal major in in high school and a vocal major in college from 1980 to 1982, and I sang Seventeen in a rock band. I was not a true RnR singer, I was more of a "George Frideric (or Frederick) Handel" type of guy, lol, but I could sing Lou. His range was my range.
I'd heard Mick had shafted Lou over the credits on "What Love Is" then had to sit out many of Foreigner's final shows due to health issues so they had zero original members on stage-a money grab if there ever was one and shows what Mick is about. karma perhaps? be well, Lou! hopefully your health issues are behind you.
I read the name Foreigner and their songs start up in my head
There is only one Lou, and then there is everybody else. 👍👀👍
Fantastic to hear in person - all too rarely - from one of my all-time favourite voices.😀
Lou, is as genuine, honest as it gets, one of the great voices
Sound wise and pure performance these guys were one of these best shows I ever saw.
Our hometown guy Lou Gramm, He ROC in more ways than one.
The Arcade…most kids today don’t know what they missed
First time I saw him was with Poor Heart. They used to play dances at a little church in our hometown. When Black Sheep happened probably saw them 50 times around our area. I always knew that he would go places. He was just so good, it had to happen. A lot of true artists get screwed in the music biz, and that's a dam shame. Lou got screwed right left and center. He deserves a lot more than he's gotten so far. Great musician. He has my respect.
Lou plan and simple you were Foreigner. One of the Very Best Rock voices Ever. Love You Lou. God Bless.
'You're all I am' .... love it.
Thanks Lou.
In May of 1983, I visited Rochester, NY. Wish I would've known at the Time, it was Lou Gramm's Hometown!! I did manage to visit the 'House of Guitars'!
Yup ! Hometown hero and still lives here. The HOG is still a great store for music. Black Sheep played our high school in 73 !
Lou certainly will go down in history as one of the greatest rock and roll singers. He has overcome so much in his career. Who would have thought he could ever come back after brain surgery? But he did and even today health wise he seems to be doing well. But it seems like the tables have turned and now it's Mick's that is having major health issues and can no longer perform. It's understandable, these guys are in their mid 70's. I would go see these guys perform if they were on stage in rocking chairs. Where would classic rock be if it weren't for super groups like Foreigner, Styx, Boston, Journey and the list goes on. Each group seems to have had it's own share of controversies over the years. Difference of opinions is just a part of interacting humans. And hindsight is always 20/20. I was hooked on Foreigner in Jr HI school when I first heard Long Long Way from home. I headed to the local G.C.Murphy's and bought the 45 and never looked back. How many Foreigner songs can you sing from memory? I'll bet there are several.
Still hoping he will consider teaching voice. What we could learn from him would be immeasurable.
Most great singers who rock as hard as Lou did, want to do ballads and ride the hay wagon off into the sunset. Lou is a monster musician and human.
It's typical for young beginner musicians to want to rock out and not play " sissy" love songs. Lou kept his spirit of rock. He never lost his energy to rock until he had his physical problem. His book is great.
Lou Gramm was the voice of Foreigner (sorry Kelly Hansen). For Mick Jones to ask Lou to drop out of his own tour so that Foreigner could start recording is nothing short of jealousy. And to not give Lou Gramm a songwriting credit for "I Want to Know What Love Is" is absolutely preposterous. It seems to me that if you are a musician and you suggest, while recording, that the lyrics should be slightly changed here or the phrasing should be changed slightly here, you are giving input into how that song is written. Clearly, Gramm should have been given a songwriting credit. It just boggles my mind when musicians are asked to contribute to a recording of a song and provide their own input and are not given a credit. This happened to Steve Lukather and Steve Porcaro (Toto) and Eddie Van Halen when recording "Beat It" by Michael Jackson. Porcaro came up with the synthesizer intro and Lukather came up with the guitar arrangement. Van Halen added his own unforgettable solo. How do those three musicians not get a songwriting credit? Lou Gramm deserved way better than this.
Yes. Hansen is a good rock singer & performer, but he pretended to be as important as Lou, singing covers of Lou's songs. Jones gave him a job, do it or else, and it supported his life, but on top of gifted musicians, Lou made real Foreigner what they are, Legends, and Great. The long touring cover band should have been renamed "Mick's Cash Grab". Lou is also a man with an amazing story of overcoming odds a fight to go on. An incredible rebound. Tons of Respect for Lou, one of the Great Rock Vocalists ever. Sadly, not so much for Jones. It's like a mirror image, his story is of a long slow decline. Karma ? Maybe. Who really knows.
Yeah, I had to hide that "Head Games" album from my parents I was twelve years old when I bought it. I saved up for a long time to buy it and I knew I would have to sneak it into the house 😂 But I had to have it! Looking back, it probably wasn't the best music for me to be listening to, but it inspired me to pick up some drum sticks and learn to play. I love that band and Lou Gramm was my first ever serious crush. His voice just moved me. And at the time, I had no idea why! 😂
Not only do the fans recognize Lou's contribution to Foreigner; they'd say their IS no Foreigner without Lou Gramm. Mick deserves his credit as the principal writer, but let's be clear: Lou Gramm is the reason Foreigner became an international success.
Lou was Foreigner!!
That's a bit much. His voice is fantastic, without question. But he played no other instrument besides drums, so he needed Mick's writing and arranging skills. And the other Foreigner guys contributed to that classic sound, too.
Glad I got a chance to see them in 85.
But my goodness the whole album was just gold.
Not a bad song on the album,,, Starrider was so powerful!
Between Lou’s vocals and Mick’s guitar was the nucleus!
The Voice!
Saw Foreigner 4 times in 1 year, toward the end of Lou's tenure. Incredibly polished. There was no mistaking who you were listening to.
My heart goes out Lou. He is the best male vocalist and he was treated like this? He didn't deserve this. He should have been paid paid accordingly...he deserved a cut of 'I want to know what love is' Love you Lou. I wish it was different for you xo
I truly loved his music. The best 👊🏻 memories

Seen Foreigner 4 times . The closest was 4th row . One of the best I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen Robert Plant, Roger Daltry Steve Perry, Klaus Meine . Lou Gramm was in that league
Ever seen Freddie?
Yeah I seen Queen w/ Freddie ! Great show ! Forgot about Freddie !

In my opinion, Lou Gramm has one of the best rock voices in the history of the genre. I’m talking Paul Rogers, Robert Plant, John Waite and on and on and on…etc. I would go so far as to say some are absolutely as good, no question, but none have been better.
Lou is a great singer..it’s terrible when supposed friends and band member’s screw each other over . Rock and roll is a vicisous game .
I can assure you nobody in my parents household was burning their Foreigner albums. My parents brought me up on Foreigner. Also, I grew up the 70's and 80's and that album was definitely being played on 97.5 WONE in Akron, Ohio and WMMS in Cleveland. I distinctly remember the songs being played on the radio, while swimming at the lake, parties, driving, etc because I would crank them. LOL
I really hope they are able to get into the Rock Hall but I hate to hear how Lou was treated.
Lou, you're Foreigner! All the world knows you and the voice. Mick? Could have been anyone else!❤
Lou looks like a founding father. Awesome.
A very enjoyable exchange & the inside stories are fascinating!
Urgent and juke box hero massive success after that awesome cold as ice 8 track album good stuff he'll of a passionate singer
Don Freeman here. I was playing keyboards with Larry Carlton ( and already a huge Foreigner fan) in Japan and on one of our days off we got to see them perform and it was a brilliant show! Great but without Lou Gramm as lead singer and songwriter it wouldn’t have worked on all the levels etc. As for Mick Jones taking credit and royalties from Lou, as a songwriter myself take an extremely dim view of that greedy behaviour.
Paul simon did the same thing and didn't need to hog all the royalties, esp since
Many people were as important to a project as Paul.
Also with the Band
And Steppenwolf
Ready or Not is such an underrated album. Still love those songs to this day!
Firing Ian and Al was huge mistake and Lou knows it....They were never the same....And Lou all but admits it..Loved those early records!
Love this channel & the way you present the interviews just ask a question and let the guys tell there stories… perfect
Thanks for these videos there Gold

Ditto. I think that I missed a boat here though. Gonna have to explore their catalog more.
Just loved watching this fantastic interview with Lou Gramm!!
For quite a while now I've been finding more and more reasons to dislike Mick Jones.
Seen you Lou in Chicago at the Taste of Chicago w/Foreigner when you came back from the blood disease and were taking the meds which had steroids and you gained all that weight. It was your first show back with the band after the illness ! The show started slow ! Could tell you were unsure of yourself and by the end with Juke Box hero you were back in fine form ! I was nervous for you ! Your mom and dad were there. They were great to talk to ! Love you Lou ! You were awesome
If you ever read Lou Gramm’s book Juke Box Hero it is an awesome even inspiring book!! I would love to see a biopic on either Foreigner or Lou Gramm
