Across all style guides and educational institutions, academic writings usually requires a logical flow that the writer makes clear by using headings and a statement, support, conclusion paragraph structure. However, creative writing can be done in any style, including one the the author invents.

the characteristics of creative writing includes character development, setting, plot, conflict, theme, point of view, tone, and style.
creative writing allows for more personal expression whereas academic/scholarly writing aims to explore an idea, argument, or concept while academic writing requires more factual evidence for support, and presents challenges such as the pressure of time.

The characteristics of creative writing focus on imaginative and symbolic content, like fiction or entertainment, and are intended to entertain, motivate, or inspire audiences. The purpose of creative writing is to give an audience a theme, moral lesson, or message, while academic writing focuses on factual and straight-forward content and is intended to inform or educate the audience.

I've been teaching technical writing in four colleges for a total of more than thirty years; I've seldom seen a clearer discussion of the differences between the two types of writing! I'll be sure to show this to my class this morning...

Technical writing is basically a way to pay the bills while you work on your creative writing. Lol
I would major in Technical instead of Creative Writing as you will be more marketable when you graduate to get a job than with creative. And more up to date and proficient with the latest computer programs you will likely be using in the corporate world. Creative Writing doesn't teach that as much...at least they didn't when I was in school.
