  • This video demonstrates the Convent Stitch which the St. Martha's Guild uses to hand-stitch the hems on altar linens. Also covered is a nice way to avoid knots, thread waxing and an elegant method for stitching mitered corners.

    Thank you so much for this! I kept trying to learn the convent stitch, but a video makes it so much easier as opposed to reading about the technique.

      You're so welcome! The say a picture is worth a thousand words, but a video is worth goo gobs more than that.😁

      A picture is worth a 1000 words and a video is worth, like, a bazillion words. You should have seen my face when I saw my first tatting video at least 30 years after I learned how to do it from a library book. “Well, that looks faster...”

    This is super helpful! My parish is trying to bring back liturgical fiber arts and I'm working on learning linens.

      I absolutely love the trend toward bringing linen back to the altar. What's even more wonderful is when parishioners can become proficient at creating them. It is my favorite thing about the guild. Please let us know if you have any questions or want to come for a visit.

      @@SaintMarthasGuild last year, I got to lead a multigenerational class at my parish. We took local fleeces (two lovely Jacob sheep, Orion and Anne Bonney, who were blessed in absentia during the Blessing of the Animals), and I washed them myself. Then the class combed/carded and spun the wool on spindles, dyed it with local plants, and wove it into small wall hangings. The Altar Guild brought vestments and linens to show everyone our fiber arts traditions and how they go back as far as the Old Testament. We got to speak to some shepherds via Zoom and discussed the Good Shepherd passages.
      Finally, we had yarn left over, so we wove a stole for our departing rector. Every fiber of that stole came from within 10 miles of the church and passed through a parishioner's hands. We're hoping to run it again this year.

    Thank you. Easy, I get it. Would have done a messier whip stitch without the instruction. I would like to hand stitch a linen runner for the table that sits in front of the podium at our Baptist church. The table is currently dressed with a sad looking poly(?) sateen cloth that isn't even pressed.

    It would be really lovely if you used a contrasting color of thread in tutorials. My old eyes just can’t quite see where the stitches are with the white on white. 😭

      That's a brilliant idea. I've wanted to make a few other minor adjustments to the content.

    Hello, would you use the convent stitch on the entire length of a Mensa cloth?

    • @SaintMarthasGuild
      @SaintMarthasGuild  Před 11 měsíci +1

      That's what we do. We've gotten six of us going at it at the same time. Those are pretty lovely moments.

      @@SaintMarthasGuild thank you, I have promised nine altar cloths not knowing they would need to be hand stitched. So, pray for me please ❤️

      @@bridgetj3008 hand sewing them is absolutely not required. It's just really cool if you do it that way. We have a ton of enthusiastic stitchers so it's not a big deal to do these by hand. It still takes a good long time though. Mitering the corners is pretty non negotiable. Linen is pretty non negotiable, but a machine hem will still deliver a beautiful altar cloth. Purificators actually come in contact with the precious blood but people machine stitch them all the time without batting an eye. Don't kill yourself on this job, or charge them properly for the mountain of labor that would be required, and enjoy the paid therapeutic stitching for the next three months.

      @@SaintMarthasGuild that is a relief to know regarding stitching, I really appreciate it. I’m totally new to this and it sounded like it must be done by hand. Thank you!!
