    Thank you. Easy, I get it. Would have done a messier whip stitch without the instruction. I would like to hand stitch a linen runner for the table that sits in front of the podium at our Baptist church. The table is currently dressed with a sad looking poly(?) sateen cloth that isn't even pressed.

      @@bridgetj3008 hand sewing them is absolutely not required. It's just really cool if you do it that way. We have a ton of enthusiastic stitchers so it's not a big deal to do these by hand. It still takes a good long time though. Mitering the corners is pretty non negotiable. Linen is pretty non negotiable, but a machine hem will still deliver a beautiful altar cloth. Purificators actually come in contact with the precious blood but people machine stitch them all the time without batting an eye. Don't kill yourself on this job, or charge them properly for the mountain of labor that would be required, and enjoy the paid therapeutic stitching for the next three months.

      @@SaintMarthasGuild last year, I got to lead a multigenerational class at my parish. We took local fleeces (two lovely Jacob sheep, Orion and Anne Bonney, who were blessed in absentia during the Blessing of the Animals), and I washed them myself. Then the class combed/carded and spun the wool on spindles, dyed it with local plants, and wove it into small wall hangings. The Altar Guild brought vestments and linens to show everyone our fiber arts traditions and how they go back as far as the Old Testament. We got to speak to some shepherds via Zoom and discussed the Good Shepherd passages. Finally, we had yarn left over, so we wove a stole for our departing rector. Every fiber of that stole came from within 10 miles of the church and passed through a parishioner's hands. We're hoping to run it again this year.

      I love that you have palms in your refrigerator! I made the mistake of snagging a whole bag of leftover palms late last Sunday and now I feel obligated to make something with all of them. My family might be doing a bit of eye rolling. At least it gave me a chance to develop the two hearts. Now I have a big bag of them at varying stages of development. Prototyping is a bit risky. I wish I could edit out that comment about it being ok to clip off the "stem." I'm pretty sure the whole thing will explode into chaos. Must figure out the answer to that...

    I made the Fancy Cross, but it did not dry well. Did I not pull it tight enough? I’ve thought about putting something heavy on the cross lengths to flatten them while drying. Any thoughts?

    • @SaintMarthasGuild
      @SaintMarthasGuild Před rokem

      That is an issue with palm constructions. They do undergo a 'transformation' when they dry. Some folds do seem to handle the shrinkage better than others. Pressing them in or under a book should help to keep them from curling up so much.

    What type of palm are you using and how do you receive it? Whole?

    • @SaintMarthasGuild
      @SaintMarthasGuild Před 2 lety

      The palms are probably from a date palm, or a cabbage palmetto. St. John Cantius usually gets them already trimmed off of the bud, or crown, and bagged up ready to go. I also pick up several crowns from a local florist a couple of days before to create the long scepter arrangements that the Priest and Deacon carry during the procession. I believe that in the US most of the palms come from Florida. The next time I visit there I may be nosing around for unattended palmettos so I can play in the off season.
