- “It’s clear that actually, as a KGB officer, he was pretty mediocre.”
Whilst Putin ‘defends Russia’, he lets “his cronies rob Russia in the process”, says Mark Galeotti, Putin expert and author of ‘Putin's Wars - From Chechnya to Ukraine’.

That was nothing but a photo op for the plane. Here in the UK our politicians do not interfere in military strategy. They do not tell the commanders what to do on the battlefield. Unfortunately for ruzzia that's what their leader repeatedly attempts to do.
It is important to remember that when Putin came up to officer rank in the KGB, they had about 30 percent as much uniformed "armed services" as the Soviet Red Army - because the "Border Patrol" and other uniformed "security" forces were in the KGB command. That changed when the Soviet Union fell. Oddly Putin has overseen the stripping away of the para military forces from the new SVD, going so far as creating a "National Guard" that has usurped "security service" power. And the Interior Ministry has also absorbed some of the old KGB's forces inside the Russian state. Compared to when Putin started the "security service(s)" power has grown just a little, but that power has been spread to many more agencies outside the current "KGB".

Putin is sickly obsessed with some assumed glorious Russia of the past. This obsession clearly impairs his way of handling reality, further worsened by the absence of counter pressure within the Kremlin. I don't agree that it is "heated rhetoric " to say that Russia may attempt to expand. Thinking about different scenarios that are dependent on the outcome of this war is sensible and rational. This war has exposed our vulnerabilities if such a scenario did play out and we have essentially been given a heads up which we should not ignore.
If anything I think Galeotti is underestimating the potential consequences if Russia should win and that he has a whimsical notion of Russia and putin.
I don't understand why he keeps being touted as an analyst when he rarely says anything of any real value.
The best scenario would be for Putin to be defeated soundly and if not, and concessions are made, then the
"Heated rhetoric" becomes prescient advice.
If ruzzia harbors no intention of expanding following a victory (God forbid) over Ukraine, why are the talking heads on ruzzian state TV constantly prating on about their intent to seize the Baltic States, retake Poland, march on Berlin, take over Moldova, reduce Kahazkstan to vassal status, and grab the remainder of Georgia?

We must see the economic, technological and military “power” of Russia in perspective. Russia is indeed a huge country in square km, but only has 144 million inhabitants ( Mexico 128 million, Japan 123 million). This is 40% of USA or Eurozone. The GDP of Russia however is only 4% of the GDP of the Eurozone + USA, this is equal to the GDP of the small countries Belgium + Netherlands. And less than the GDP of the state of California. Relatively (per capita) the GDP of Russia is very low. Beside that the economy of Russia has signs of a 3th world economy. Half of the income is coming from oil & gas. Based on this, Russia isn’t a world power. And for sure, it isn’t a economic power. This is the reason they can’t build up and maintain a big army. The army they already have is far beyond normal proportions in relation to their GDP. This hurts their budgets and prosperity permanently. In this perspective, Russia is a dictatorship with a huge inferiority complex and dangerous megalomaniac ambitions. The path they chose will be their downfall.

Prominent US corporates and administrations drove Yeltsin's asset stripping theft of the USSR's assets from the people who owned it under the USSR constitution, and forced Ukraine to give nukes to Yeltsin as a reward, along with IMF/World bank funding. Is it too difficult to see the distinctive hand of the US behind what has happened ever since?
Yeltsin in 1992 pointed out the asset-stripping hadn't worked in South America.
But it certainly has in Russia.
The problem Britain has is not the quantity of everything. Its problem is that (I believe) as things stand, the UK would not be able to get enough personnel and equipment to the likely field of action rapidly enough. UK needs a larger fleet of C5 and C17 aircraft in addition to a small standing army in the Baltic countries which is where it's actually needed more than in the UK. The same goes for France, Germany, Poland and Finland. 15,000 personnel and 100 tanks from each would probably be adequate. Putin would probably see it as a provocation but it would be merely a precaution.
It's good to see Galeotti not promoting Human trafficking of citizens by a government any more. The party line has changed.

@@marystapley309 The question is, would there have been anyone else who could have handled the weight of the job?
@@marystapley309 Forgive me, but you have a very one-dimensional view of Vladimir Putin. Please hear me out. When he was handed the reigns of the presidency by a corrupt, inept and almost entirely controlled Boris Yeltsin, the Russian Federation was on the very brink of total collapse. Over the course of more than two decades, he lifted Russia out of near-total ruin. When Yeltsin resigned, the country was being run by a group of greedy, vicious, and cynical oligarchs, who consistently acted against Russia’s interests. These vultures quickly joined forces to oust Putin because they realized he stood in their way of continually clawing at and stealing Russia’s abundant resources. These were hardly "weak yes men." Yet Putin prevailed over them and despite ever-escalating measures by the west, he has led Russia to unprecedented prosperity. Russia's economy, more than 8,000 sanctions notwithstanding, grew by 3.8% last year, making it Europe's fastest growing economy. In terms of PPP, Russia has now become the world's fifth largest economy, surpassing Germany, who are now spiraling into recession; mainly because of the sanctions they imposed on Russia. The U.K. is almost there too and the rest of Europe isn’t too far behind. The Russian agricultural, manufacturing, construction and private sectors are booming, and unemployment is at historical lows. In fact, Russia is facing a possible labor shortage due to the rapid increase in demand for domestically manufactured goods and infrastructure projects. I could go on and on with what Putin and his team have accomplished, but if you were to research Putin and the realities of today's Russia, using objective resources instead of relying on this hack in the video, who merely regurgitates the corporate media script, you will broaden your view of what is happening in this world. Have you seen the footage of the Ivanovets going to the bottom of the black sea with all hands lost? All that's missing is Jack and Rose.. "I'M KING OF THE WORLD".😂😂😂
Superpower😂
Russia is anything but super power. It is a gas station.
Now resorting to hurling insults huh?
In fact Ivan IV the Terrible has never been referred to as the Great. Instead, his grandfather, Ivan III, goes by the name "the Great" often for his contributions to codification of laws among other things, although he is much less known than his grandson, especially in the West.
08:21 "while we're trying to get Matt back on the line..." 🤔
If Putin was so mediocre, he would never have risen as he did or retained power for so long. But, hey, what do I know? I am not a Putin 'expert' with books to sell.
It depends on what you mean by mediocre - officer, "educated" person, or just simply a normal man? Or as an evil man?
He is very sophisticated in this last part.
His level of any education in subjects outside the KGB-specific ones is between the C and B minus.
But a set of unfortunate circumstances brought him up. Almost in the same way it happened with Stalin. Although I'd admit that even Stalin was smarter and more educated.
Who has totally demilitarised NATO.
who or what?
@@gavinmc5285 Putin is a mediocre KGB officer with no military experience.....who has totally demilitarised NATO.
Just our luck to have Grant Shnapps in charge at this moment.
All new british drinking from the same group think fountain question mark
So mediocre is Putin. Behind the times radio put lots of videos out on him on a daily basis
That's because the times radio love talking about the Kremlin clown.
Putin is living rent-free in your tiny little craniums.
He's just that mediocre, it should be in medical books.
Thank god Biden,Sunak,Macron,Zelenskyy etc have such
towering military genius
🤣
So he is no so good. Then how good is the western leaders ? Useless !
Please use metric units (international audience).
hahaha this bs propaganda is just hilarious 🤣🤦♂️
More vilifying narrative nonsense from Times Radio won't help with having a sense of realism or a healthy respect for the other side.
Putin is a future centenarian . I expect him to reign until 2040. Truly a icon for the 21st century. A leader who all other leaders will desire to emulate.
Why would any sane person want to emulate a gangster !!
Love your humour comrade…
So you think the war in Ukraine goes until 2040
I thought heads of the states have generals who are doing what they can't.
