- Welcome to this week's bird photography video, in which I attempt to get a specific shot of a robin on a post... Will I get the image and what else will I see along the way?
I hope that you enjoy the video!

This was probably the most beautiful and innocent thing I’ll experience all day. Thanks for doing this and sharing it.
My God your levels of patience put me to shame waiting for a cloud or a bloody wave!! 😊👍
Patience always pays. Beautiful shots
Thanks very much 🙂
Mate, that was brilliant...the build up to the final elusive shot! You've got a real connection with your new garden family now 😊 I with Derek - great watch!
Brilliant! Birds love bird food with a high fat content to stay warm in winter months. Suet balls are awesome!!
Welcome to the world of bird photography Garry one day a garden full of birds the next not even a magpie mind you, it is wet and windy in Hertfordshire this morning. What more could you do but watch a video with a cup of tea and a well put together video thank you, Garry.
Fantastic images
Start calling you bird man Gary. Keep thinking how hot it must be in that hide for hours on end ! Great shots and wonderful look at nature in the works.
Thanks for another great video Gary. Calming, engaging, fabulous images. Kind regards - Rob
Great job Garry, some cracking images, thanks for sharing.
Awesome images and nice vlog. Thanks.
Another great video, thank you for sharing.
Glad the sunflower hearts are doing the job, the sparrows will soon develop a taste for them.
Photography, birds, and an acca decca fan too, top bloke 👍🏻😉
Great work gary
Some really good shots there mate detail in the feathers is amazing.
Great video. Your Passion and perseverance is really nice to see 👍👍👊
If we have Patience they will come, nice Vlog Thank you for sharing
Really enjoyed this one you got some great shots there thank you for keeping us entertained throughout this trying times
Another cracking bird photography video Gary. I particularly liked the monologue about the 'boring fat old bloke in a hide waiting for nothing' which made me laugh. The Sparrow feeding it's young was my favourite shot although I'd be happy to have taken any of them (apart from the out of focus ones - I'm world beating in that department already!)
You are a poet and you didn’t even know it 🤓. Got some great images there, patience pays off in the end 👍🏻.
Well done Gary on getting your shot, although I think your best image is the mother feeding the chick ....
When I am after a particular shot I set up my 80D and 160-600mm on the subject in hand ... set the focus manually by putting a plastic cup where it will land and compose the shot, then I connect my cable remote on my lap and sit back, that way when the subject lands I don't have to move my hand up to the camera, at the same time I use my SX50 bridge camera for everything else happening in the garden.
To finish your Robin image completely how about cloning out the suet ..... Paul
Well done Gary your patience was well rewarded.Maybe drill a hole in the post and stuff suet in make it a bit more work for him 👍
This was great! Your robins and finches have slightly different plumage than ours. Very interesting to see that. I’m glad you finally got your pictures of the robins, but you also had some wonderful other captures. I shoot a lot of backyard birds too, although I don’t have your blind setup. Mostly I keep the dining room window clean and the camera to hand.
Martin rang me up and said Dereks not a clue, excellent video! Why, that’s simple, you and your tenacious quest to grab images other would of given up on. This is why! Also in your hide you look like your in Tron! Cool 😎
You have done so well. Going from having birds just fly by to now getting many species visiting you , inc a sparrowhawk. Unfortunately that won't be going for the seeds . !
Some beauties there Gary, the trouble I have with sunflower hearts is when I first put them out the gold & green finches come but then they grey squirrels come and they stay till they finish them, so can’t keep up. But great to watch all the same, I quite happy at the moment starting to get dragonflies and damselflies at the pond I put in in March. Stay safe
It takes all sorts Derek 😂 Anyone that has done bird photography (or any wildlife I suppse) from a hide will immediately identify that waiting game Gaz. Me, I'll be honest I used to love it, it's anticipation of something happening I guess. Some cracking images and great to see you have the Greenfinch back in. Cool aloso that nuthatch have found their way into the garden, if they are about the y should return - I have had a pair of them this week. Someone has already suggested making the hollow bigger for the suet, I was going to make the very same observation. The sparrow feeding the chick was my fave of the set. Atb Alan
Some nice images Gary. i prefer to shoot hand held when in my garden hide.
nice vid.
Derek, are you still watching that bloke in his hide.
Yes Martin, he's getting redder and redder, hope he's got some water!
Why do you watch him Derek.
He tells a bloody good story Martin, now shut up and let me watch, something might happen.
It is all about the story, and that is why we love listening to you & your views. Great image of the sparrows, more of a story!
Take care keep safe Matey
Oh my, that is a great shot of the Robin mate, for me though the best shot is you captured the feeding Sparrow
Stunning,
May I make a suggestion as to slightly hollow out the post to hold the fat pellets and have you thought about a gimble head for the tripod
I'm going to get one soon.
Great vlog and patience payed off.
You read my mind... As soon as I got that shot I realised that I need to make a bigger hole to sit the food in 🙂
@@GaryNormanPhoto with my 5d and 150-600mm hand holding is a bit unwieldy hence my need for a gimble
But I'd love to attract green finches as they look lovely mate.
@@garystone6583 He gave one away a while ago, if only we held onto things we don't use ;-)
Hi Gary, you have taken some amazing photos of your backyard birds. I especially like the one of the adult feeding the chick. Because you are getting such great shots I'm hesitant to even question this, but why do you feel that you need the blind? Maybe it's because I live in the woods with a lot of birds around but I find that they get use to me being outside and don't get easily startled. I can walk within a few feet of our feeders without them flying off. We've even had chickadee's feed out of our hands and stay on the feeder while taking them to be refilled only to fly off when entering our shed and to find them sitting on the branch waiting for us to bring the feeder back. Not all the birds are that bold but most of them will let you get within a few feet of them once they get use to you. You may be missing some great opportunities by restricting your vision using the blind. I do think that a blind is needed for most waterfowl with the possible exception of mallards. It's just something to consider. Once again, great video and photos. Thank you for sharing.
Don't give up, sunflower hearts great for finches, suet blocks and fat balls will keep sparrow away most of the time. Maybe pre focus with something the size of a robin. Good luck.
Beautiful shots.... I feel you pain I’ve waited hours for the Robin to land a garden fork handle over the past few weeks and he has only landed there after the camera has been taken down. I will get the shot one day though !
Best wishes
Tim
Great Vid mate .. I know the frustration also.. I started setting camera to spot focus and found it much better... We both got that same lens, love this lens.
Hi Gary some really good photos there but I wood drill some holes in the top of the post with a large ridge way bit to hide the feed in. This is not meant as a critical remark well done REGARDS
Try mealworm Robins love them
Some great shots there Gary, I’ve had so many Sparrows and the fledglings this year, got a few of them being fed but not to your quality, my hands do shake slightly due to medication so not getting many pin sharp images hand held, think I may have a go with my tripod though not got a hide 🤣
£ days of hard slog mate but in the end the robin gave up before you did well Doone Gary Mate
