- Well, it's been a while hasn't it?? I just thought I'd drop a video to say hello, to discuss where I've been and to talk about the future of the channel!

Gary, it's great to see you break the cycle of inactivity on here. I can relate to much of what you say and I am similarly stuck in a rut and completely uninspired to pursue my photography. When we get wrapped in things like photography over a protracted period of time we can often beat ourselves up when we are just not feeling it. It's ok to leave it alone. After all, if it no longer serves us for whatever reason or fails to deliver joy we can put it on the back burner. Our eye for a shot and our technical skills might get a bit rusty but they will never leave us so we can pick it up again as and when we feel the urge. You're a lovely, authentic fella...keep being you :)
Hi mate, thanks so much for your comment 🙂My father in law always says that hobbies are supposed to be fun so if you're not enjoying it then it's not a hobby at that point! Like you said, the eye for a shot is always there, and it's just allowing ourselves to put the camera down and take a break that sometimes reinvigorates us. I know that you'll get your passion for photograhy back at some point and when you do, I have no doubt that you'll be knocking out amazing images again in no time! In the meantime I'll enjoy listening to your guitar solos on Facebook 🙂

Great to see and listen to your ramblings again. Don't worry about getting a portfolio shot every time. Try record shots of your loca towns. Once a building has ben demolished and replaced the old shots have value. I have recorded Britains railways since 1958 and authors now contact me for older photos to be in books & magazines. Meanwhile I still record the modern railway scene so I have an extensive library which will be going to a large railway archive upon my eventual demise. I do enjoy your hosting the Pubcasts. Keep up the good work.

Great to see you back on your own channel Gary. I understand what you said about being uninspired recently. I've had injuries and health issues that have stopped me hiking which is when I enjoyed my photography most. For quite a while I've produced either nothing or touristy snap shots. I'm hoping to get back out more this year and reinvent my photography. One goal at a time and keep moving 😁

Well this was a surprise (a nice one!). I know the feeling, I had such high hopes for doing some winter photography this year but it's hard to get motivated when we have had little to no snow so far this winter (I'm sure we are going to get it) and it's been mild, dull gray skies and rain. Nice to see you out again Gary. Loved that ICM image.
Thanks very much Susan, the weather here has been very similar recently and that can definitely have an adverse effect on your photography (although I'm not sure that I can blame the last nine months of inactivity on that!)
Great stuff, Gary. Great to see you get back on the horse as they say. We definitely all have those moments of downtime. Luckily we have been able to get our Gary fix with the Pubcast. Love the images as well. 👏🏻👏🏻
Great to see you back Gary, I regularly watch the Pubcast & strive myself to make a CZcams channel. For me I work full time & have a family like alot of people so don't get enough time to be out with the camera. Pretty much most Landscape CZcams channels are all about hiking, having a mobile home where you can drive anywhere you want & have all the time in the world. So my goal is to spend my days off visiting interesting, everyday places & documenting them. Video all new to me so nervous & clueless but we all start somewhere, looking forward to the next vid & if you do the North East I'd join you in my neck of the woods
I might just take you up on that mate! I'd say definitely go for it with regards to starting a channel and getting some videos out there. Even though you may not think that the locations are as glamourous as some of the places that the 'bigger' channels visit, I guarantee that you will stil have many people interested in where you you visit 🙂 If you ever need any advice regading CZcams, drop me a line and I will help where I can 🙂
Welcome back! Great to see you creating some more content. I completely get where you are coming from as I frequently hit a brick wall with my photography and often suffer from imposter syndrome. I hope you find the motivation to continue but don't beat yourself up about it.
Thanks very much Steve 🙂 Imposter sydrome pretty much hits the nail on the head mate, but it's actually a good thing because it can be used to drive us on (sometimes anyway)
The ICM shot of the (pine?) trees is really nice. I live in an area (central Louisiana, US) absolutely infested with pine trees and I agree -- They're virtually impossible to shoot, given their uber-vertical nature. Groves of tightly-packed pines with late warm sunlight streaming through the tree trunks always catch my eye, but I've never been able to isolate a subject within the "vertical chaos". I never thought of ICM... hmmm. 🙂 I've also been watching through the Pubcast video library, really enjoying that.
It was great to see you back, and your comments certainly resonate with me, especially with this prolonged period of dark very wet weather. Its nice to hear you talking about what can be the reality of the hobby, instead of the usual "its all so easy" vlogs! Anyway you have kept me entertained during these short days with your chair of the pubcast. Look forward to the next video.

@@GaryNormanPhoto Hi Mate, yeah my studies are going well but very full on. I've been out with my camera, but like you, not with the vlogging gear though. I must admit it was quite liberating not having to make a film and just enjoy photography for photography sake.

Hi mate, social media can be a difficult place , i know i watch a lot of other photographers, you included, and always find i compare myself to them and their channel. It never ends well for me. I too find it difficult to find the time to make regular content , i just got so many things i should be doing and trying to strike a balance is difficult. I have just accepted that i make the videos i can for me to look back on and for my kids and grand children to look back on when i am no longer here. I do still find myself looking at how the video has done but i try not to let i bother me if the views are lower than normal ! I remember finding your channel and watching a few of your vlogs before i subscribed. I remember thinking what a nice genuine guy you were and that you made content that was more realistic compared to those big channels that had sponsors and travelled half way round the world to produce half a dozen videos from a single trip , several times a year. Good luck to you whatever direction you decide to go, but make sure its a direction you want to go in and not what you think will do well. Do what you like and hopefully you will be more content doing it. I look forward to watching and being inspired, whatever you do , all the best mate.

I try to keep things as real as I can and while I know that will never garner the likes and views of the bigger channels, as the comments here show, I have a really good community of friends, which is far more important!

Good to see you back on here, it can be really tough to get back on the wagon after a period of absence, I know myself if I haven't got out for a few weeks it's difficult for me to find the motivation to get back on it, nevermind several months. So fair play to you. As one of the first CZcamsrs I watched when I started photography it would be a huge shame if you were to pack it in, I'm sure you've not only inspired me but many others. Remember that when you are questioning if you are good enough.. you are, in spades!

Hi Gary. Just read Nick's comments and agree with everything he said. I would also like to add something that helps me. If I am in a spell when my motivation leaves me I find the one thing that helps me more than any other is to scroll through my old photos. Yes I have lots of rubbish, but among them there are a few that I am quite pleased with. I think for me, looking at my own photos can help me more than looking at other photographers photos. I look at others photos more to learn.

This was a pleasant surprise when it popped up on my notifications. I like the idea of short videos of your local area featuring just one shot, I will watch those. I am not a fan of ICM, they are all too extreme but yours is brilliant and I really like it. Take care mate.
Lovely to read so many positive and encouraging comments, there's a lot of love out here for you mate.
Personally I love the variety on your channel and would prefer new content, whatever it is to be on just the one, after all I'm guessing most of us watch for you.
It's only natural to be down now & again, life has a habit of doing that and it's good to air it. That's why Normans wisdon & the pubcast are great, so many of us can relate to what is said, it's good to talk!

Good to see you back Gaz. I think we can all relate to your comments. I find it hard to keep inspired, you see images online and think I'm not anywhere near that level or get gear envy thinking that 600mm F4 will make you an instant pro, just need to find 12k to buy it! Do what you can when you can, that way it will hopefully reduce the pressure on creating content.

Good to see you back. Do what you want to do with your videos/photography. If you like it, it will come out in a positive way. If you don't like it, it will come out negative. Your spoof videos will be killers. You have a sense of humour for that. Hey, and get back to A-z street. I miss it. Your street work inspired me and now I love street. I kept subscribed and tickled the bell because I knew you would be back!
A break is good to give you time to assess and think if nothing else. In fact it's essential. There's no point in putting yourself under the pressures of delivering content to a schedule when you're not feeling inspired. Even if you decide to put out just 5 or 6 videos per year, that's doable around the other things in life. I don't know how some of these guys are putting out a video every one or two weeks, for me that's just unsustainable long term and is a ticket to burn out. Good to see you back.
I think that you're spot on about it being unsustainable, especially mentally. I think that's probably why I take these breaks. I think it's probably best for me to post when I'm enthused to and not worry about it too muc 🙂

Thanks for the update. I wish you the best. I get depressed with my photography often and can't stand to take my camera out. Don't put pressure on yourself about making videos. If you feel like just talking and have no photos, that's fine too. Your channel doesn't have to be about just landscape photography it can be whatever you want to post on it or not post on it. About your street photography, probably the best street photos I've ever seen as well as your wildlife and landscape. Best wishes to you and your family.

Great to see you back Gary, your situation seems to echo mine exactly. Still shooting but not really videoing it. Have to say I’ve quite enjoyed the break. Well done for the exercise, you look noticeably slimmer.
Everyone experiences a loss of mojo at some point but it always returns, I find going to a new location always really helps me, shout me if you want to do Dorset, I’d love to do a spoof one with you !
As you said, just do a video when you feel like it, no pressure.

Welcome back.
I also went through a photographic lull last year, and I'm still not feeling it through, admittedly January and February are always a low points for me.
So to get through this I bought myself a printer and made prints just for myself.
Not that I'm saying everyone should run out and buy a printer, and this has helped me focus more on creating better, print quality pictures.
This also means I'm not out as much as I used to.
Anyway I'm waffling.
So good to see you back.

Gary, it’s just great to know you’re ok mate, you have most definitely been missed but knowing you’re ok is the main thing.

Ditch Epidemic, Gary. I did. t got way too expensive for a small channel that costs way more to run than it generates. There's some perfectly acceptable sounds in the YT library and, frankly, the forest sounds on this video work very well too. Before I saw your ICM of the trees, I was writing a comment about shooting them as ICM as they do work as a photo with this technique - bloody difficult otherwise as you said.

I know the feeling of looking at other people's photos and think my own are rubbish. But another CZcams channel I watch, "The Cole & John Show", John says "comparison is the thief of joy" which I believe he quoted from someone else, but how true!

Hi Gary. Well done for getting back out there, for working through some of the barriers you’ve been experiencing. None of my usual tongue in cheek attempts at humour that I post on the pubcast today, just heartfelt thoughts. My thoughts, which you are welcome to disregard as you feel fit. I’ve recently had some issues through work as a paramedic, and had to have some counselling (which was awesome). One part of that was about conditioning - how we are so often conditioned to behave & react in certain ways, even from a very young age. We’re also conditioned into reacting to peoples’ expectations of us. The most difficult thing is to think ‘me’. From your comments, you do appear to be thinking more about yourself, which is great, because at the end of the day it doesn’t matter a toss what any of the rest of us think about you or your channel - the effort you put in, even for a ‘simple’ video like this one is remarkable, and inspiring in itself. Crack on, and do what you enjoy, for your own enjoyment mate. If the rest of us enjoy it as well - bonus. That image of the leaf by the way, triggered my imagination in an amazing way, as for some reason I managed to visualise it as huge and sat on top of a forest of pine trees. I really liked it 👍🏻

Hi Gary… seems to me you reflect feelings and moods most of us ‘ordinary’ photographers go through… what is helpful is to see/hear someone express that honestly!
I think you should just crack on making content… with a warts n all approach. Don’t wait till all the ducks are in a row… just do it, as and when, and let the reality show through. I think we all might be encouraged along with you. This one was refreshing in your honesty, and you produced some images. Be a lot less concerned about what others are doing…

Great video Gary. Well done getting that first video out. I understand completely the pressures one puts on themselves making content. I start so many videos that I don’t finish.. and it can be demoralizing when people don’t watch etc Anyway .. best not to think too much and just do what makes you happy..ignore the external pressures👍😀💪

Stop overthinking things. Stick it all on one channel. It's called Gary Norman Photo, not Landscape Photo, not Street Photo, not Am I Good Enough Photo. If you enjoy it get out and do it. You bring a lot of joy to people (you miserable sod) and as much as I like Pubcast, it doesn't replace You, Daz and Jamie doing your own thing.

Like many of us we are our own worst enemy (critic). Your plan, to not plan, is a good way to dig yourself out of this hole you find yourself in. You are a talented photographer/videographer whether it is Street, Landscape, or Wildlife genres. You need to take complements on board and ignore those critics that tell you they thought your channel was this or that. One other bit of advice I might give, when you took the lovely photo of the pines it was a bit blurry or was that “intentional”

I hope you are back to stay, whatever Photography genre you are doing. Just wondered if Darren gave you " a good talking to " and a breakfast to gee you into action, as he 'promised' on the pubcast. Don't doubt your own abilities as a photographer, but like riding a bike you never forget how, once you learnt, it's just you have to keep practicing to show your abilities.

Forgot about the channel ( understandable you have not been on 😃) but I do watch and see you sunday nights. Sundays wouldnt be the same without the Pubcast. only too happy to meet up (holmefen) lakenheath, Ely, Thetford etc just to keep you company and learn your methods of vlogging etc. Just say the word ,and cheer up we all have hard times andphotogrphy out in the wilds can cheer us all up.
PS: you like wild life & trees ,Try Lynford Arboretum .my favorite wood location ,quite happy to meet there one day ,Ill buy the coffee LOL

Good to see you back. To be successful at landscape photography it's not really about skill it's more lucking out with the conditions. It's become a rich man's game and how much time and fuel money you can pour into it. I've moved back to Macro for this year because I can find landscapes at insect level everywhere and I don't have to drive all over to make interesting images. I'll still do landscape photography but I won't be chasing it. I've always made images for me and moving to full frame has been exoensive and u was unable to keep my old Macro lens so I've had to wait until now to buy the 105 MC 2.8 Nikon Z. It doesn't help when all you see now is Antarctica, Iceland, Greenland, Mongolia etc and it's like well shit me I can only go to the lakes how can I stay inspired when all I see is madness mountains and epic vistas so I totally get why you'd loose faith. Just be happy with your own images and don't worry about the 1% doing the impossible.
You are spot on there mate in everything that you said. I think it's really unhealthy (even though I totally know that I'm guilty of it) to judge your own work/life/situation by what others are doing. I try really hard not to do that but sometimes it gets the better of me. I really must try macro sometime by the way 🙂

Hi Gary, I'm a newbie to your channel but been watching you on the pubcast. which I enjoy immensely. The best advice I can offer is to do what you enjoy mate, and as the Anglesey Philospher might propose " if folk don't like it, stuff 'em!" ( thought i'd better tone it down as Dave might not) ... Don't doubt yourself, your talent is clear from just the images in this video, you're no imposter ... and I look forward to your feature series of everyday landscapes.
