    The best Mac I was able to use back in the day. Sure wish apple still makes these kind of models, they were like tanks! Great find, dude!

    AS a powermac G5 Collector, the first thing you need to do as it's a dual Core model is Examin for Water leaks from the pumps, as these models have a frequent problem with leaking, if there is any corrosion under and over the power supply internally you will have problems, awesome video, nice to see you showing some vintage Macs !

    • @GearSeekers
      @GearSeekers  Před 2 lety +1

      As a collector you should know that the 2.0Ghz Dual core is air cooled, not liquid cooled. I would have never bought a liquid cooled one ;)

    Just my ballpark! I was always collecting the PowerPC Macs just cause it was a different architecture. With the Intel Switch back than I moved away from Macs. Interest came back with the M1 Macs!
    Hope you'll get a lot of fun out of the G5. I actually have a an archive of saved PPC Software and Games.
    Oh and I recently picked up a G4 Cube again.. Since me idiot sold it years ago!

    Keen to see the follow ups. I sold off a G5 tower at the beginning of 2020 with a XServe RAID that I had. Had the fibre channel cards for the G5 and the Xserve was fully loaded with 14 x 500gb PATA drives. It's something I picked up many years earlier to tinker with. But with the Xserve being noisy like most server equipment is, I only turned it on occasionally and mainly used it as a file dump when I needed to reformat another machine. Still have a MDD G4 (Dual 1.25) sitting in a cupboard that I just can't seem to part with.
    I also have a G4 iMac. I have seen someone went through the process of swapping the internals with those from a M1 Mac Mini. Tempted to do the same but not sure I have the skills to pull that one off due to the custom work needed.

    I modded two of these with parts from The laser hive (uk) to ATX. Changed the frontpanel to 4x usb 3 and installed two ryzen cpu's in the cases with two 140 mm Noctua fans in the front. Verry silent and powerfull.

    • @GearSeekers
      @GearSeekers  Před 2 lety +4

    • @blackpietto
      @blackpietto Před 2 lety

      @@GearSeekers look at The laser hive. These parts fit very snuk in your machine. Even the holes lined up perfectly. I bought my case fully working for 50 euro's. These cases are cheaper in Europe!
      I used a Dremel, but angle grinders will also work. 🤣

    Oof, got some serious nostalgia there with the 10.5 Leopard welcome video!
    My first (and current) mac is a Early 2008 24" C2D iMac. I have gone to great lengths to keep it running. It's fully upgraded except for the GPU and Ii's basically the Ship of Theseus where very few of the original parts are left.
    EDIT: 15:00 FireWire: Same. Got a bunch of family videos on MiniDV from the mid 00s through to early 2010s I need to archive and transfer on DVD. FW800 was the business back in the day! lol Time Machine backups via FW800 saves a lot of time compared to USB2.0.
    Anyway, looking forward to seeing what you do with your Powermac G5. Congrats on the find too!

    My Late' 05 PM G5 Dual Core uses Liquid Metal on the CPU with a custom fitted corsair H80i AIO with 3D printed mounting bracket. It rocks some insane core temps, about 47c max.

    I’m in PowerPC processors powered the fabled IBM AS/400 mini computers that are still beeping used today! I bought my second one as my first malfunctioned. However the aim is to connect
    A Polaroid SprintScan 4000 to scan film and transparencies for my photo book printing business. However, the Adaptec 29160LP PCI-X to Ultra160 68-Pin LVD SE SCSI Controller Card 0960-2148 card that I bought has a different connector for my scanner! So it’s back to square one. Perhaps you can chime in!

    Personally I never got into Apple, only Apple product I had was a ipod a long time ago, didn't like how you had to use itunes just to copy files across. With android it is so much easier, connect the cable to you computer, be it windows or Linux which I use most and copy across. I can understand your passion for retro computers. I am currently rebuilding my Amiga 2000, have gotten a remake motherboard and have soldered the new components on, not completly done due to the chip shortages :(

    Wonder what version of Linux is the latest you could install on it for Kernel Control? I remember running Yellow Dog back in the day.
